About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

When I'm not in school or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or an issue of Wired or some such. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

Bored? Why not try one of the games I've made:

Season of Thorns

It's not just gamers...

This person was mad about something but it wasn't necessarily video games.

I've been hearing a lot of talk lately about how negative gamers are and how we can never appreciate anything. The stereotype says that we will bitch about everything, even good things like Sonic The Hedgehog 4. Well I'm here to point out that it's not a trait that is exclusive to gamers. There are people like that in every hobby, especially the ones with a strong internet presence.

Go to any automotive forum and witness the fanboyism and general ignorance on display. It's just like any given gamer forum except replace the 360 vs Wii vs PS3 chatter with American cars vs Japanese cars vs European cars talk. There are people who drive around in their early 90s mustangs and camaros yet absolutely hate the new 'stangs and 'maros based on silly things like "They're too heavy" or "They're over designed" it really is almost exactly like a video game forum.

The same goes for forums that revolve around movies and TV. Have you ever read the user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes or MetaCritic? Pretentiousness by the truckload right there. My point is, there are people everywhere who think they know better than everyone else, it is not something that gamers hold the exclusive rights to.

On top of all of that, complaining about things in a constructive way often helps things. In our internet age, companies often listen to the things we say about the products they make. We influence the next generation of products every time we log online and give our opinion. So don't be afraid to voice your concerns about Sonic 4 being episodic, just be sure not to sound like you're smashing your head against your keyboard while you complain.

Yea i agree with you, anyone who is passionate about something is going to have strong opinions towards it. It's certainty the same way on music and movie sites. Look up a any movie on IMDB then scroll down to the message board and see the kind of arguments going on about every single movie lol. Maybe it's just because when you're passionate about a certain hobby you expect nothing but the best from it,so when things come along people see as average or a bad idea they get outraged.

Yup. It's cynicism. Although you have to agree it leans far more on the side of nerds no matter what they're nerdy about. Like I'm just as heavy into the music community as I am into video games and let me tell you it is awful. Far worse than video games because they're so much more to nitpick and it's such a larger community. But because of that you get the flipside, more optimist. I wish we welcomed our "casual" gaming brethren and sisteren more because I think they'd help us get more fun people up in this piece.

Anybody who cares about anything will grow cynicism for something. That doesn't make it right but it doesn't make it exclusive either. It's just nerds. It's what nerds do. Since man made the wheel I'd imagine it had it's fair share of cynical nerds arguing about it getting nothing done and going in a roundabout of pointless debate. Meanwhile everyone else was enjoying the wheel and loving the shit out of it.

There is a large amount of dumb in everything.

But I think what separates the Sonic scenario we've seen with car talk and movie snobs is that Sonic fans have been asking for a 2D Sonic for years. They've been asking for less characters, more retro, more fun and less gimmicks. And unlike a lot of other industries, we're still sort of in one where developers sometimes, not always often, listen to what gamers want. So the fact that SEGA is finally doing something that seems to completely placate all of the demands of Sonic fans, they suddenly don't want it anymore, and they've come up with new specifications so they can still be snobs.

Not exactly like the scenarios you came up with. But I'll give you credit by saying that, yes, we are not the only whiny bitches out there.

You're definitely right about negativity among anything with an internet presence. I think Ben Affleck said it best in [i]Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back[/]:

"The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies..."

And of course, you can replace the word "movies" with anything and it will probably still hold true.

TV is the worst.

THE WORST.

You've never seen a flamebait conversation until you've seen a Lost blog.

Very true. And I'm cautiously optimistic about Sonic The Hedgehog 4.

We had fanboys before the internet, they were just mostly centered around comic books and sports before gaming communities could be formed. Though we did have the NES vs Master System/Game Boy vs Game Gear/SMES vs Genesis arguments on the school bus.

Sports fans are funny, though. They always talk like they're actually on the team they're pulling for. "We beat the shit out of Michigan last night" when they're not even on the basketball team and well past their college days.

Great post -- FAP! Agreed with silent. I like sports, but sports fanatics drive me up the wall.

It's the internet.

If you have something where you can be virtually anonymous and there are no repercussions for your actions, you can be as big of a dick as you like and get away with it.
