Demon's Souls has been hailed as a modern hardcore classic. A game so hard that awaiting it's arrival is akin to
sitting on death row. Demon's Souls has already killed thousands of players, possibly millions if you consider the asian release. So besides that, why should you, the gamer who has yet to try Demon Souls, be afraid? Read on as I answer that very question. (minor gameplay spoilers)
1. There is no pause function.
If you need to get up to pee and you're not in the Nexus, you'd better hope that the "safe" spot you think you've found is actually safe. Because if there is a wandering enemy just ahead that you don't know about, you're going to come back from the bathroom and find yourself at the beginning of the level.
Phone ringing in the middle of battle? Pick it up and you're probably dead. Just saying.
2. There are enemies in the very beginning of the game that you cannot beat.
The red knight in 1-1 is already infamous but I see very few people talking about the end of the tutorial, where a giant demon takes you out in one, maybe two hits. I've heard he is as mortal as any demon but I don't think it's possible without new game+, either way, good fucking luck.
3. It has Dragons in it.
And they're big, and in the first level, and they breathe fire. Don't fuck with them unless you have a bow or long range spell of some sort. Unless of course you're trying to trick them into frying up a bunch of enemy soldiers. That's always fun.
So why should you muster up your courage and buy this terrifying piece of software?
Well, besides the amazing art direction and production values, the game is simply fun to play. Yes it's hardcore, yes you're going to die a lot. It took me two hours to beat 1-1. I probably died ten or more times. The going was tough and the going was slow. But I enjoyed every second of it. Learning from your mistakes and developing strategies, not to mention trying new character classes to find the one that suits you best is all very rewarding. Once you find your niche, you'll blow through sections that initially seemed tough to you. In other words, the game is tough, but beatable, go buy it.
I frequent peeing will be a problem. :(
I was a Knight, but then I kept getting my ass kicked so I switched to Royalty. I've only died a couple of times, and that's because of not blocking and oh that stupid Tower Knight. I got my ass handed to me the first time I met him, but then after figuring out a way to beat him, it was pretty simple.
I've tried knight, temple knight, priest and soldier. I stuck with soldier for awhile but I think I'm gonna start over with a Royal tonight. I wanna try this soul arrow spell (or whatever its called).
shit i piss on my floor i dont give afuck
Every death I've had in that game so far are the result of me falling off of a ledge. Stupid gravity.
I might try this, after all the discussion going on about it. I'm not *that* into rogue-likes (Except Way of the Samurai...?), but after the stream of walk-and-win games abound (I'm looking at you Uncharted 2), I could probably use a tough cookie
Loving this game.
@Tubatic
That's exactly why I bought this game and I'm definitely satisfied. It's tough without being cheap and it's really fun to play. I'm a big fan of rougue-like games though, always have been.
No pause? Can you hit the PS button and get your pause on that way? I understand being hardcore and all, but fuck me.
@Blasto
Nope, bringing up the XMB doesn't pause the game either.
Sounds good to me. I might pick it up.
Still waiting for this to arrive, but I'm stoked.
I'm still on 1-1, and if it wasn't for chores and homework, I be reattempting it. Last death: burned by red dragon trying to loot corpses. I hope I can get close enough to touch my bloodstain, but I'm worried its right where dragon likes to exhale. Oh, and I'm playing as a rapier-wielding thief. No interest in trying other classes as of yet.
I must express a distinct interest in this game.
omg no pause function? That's badass.
Cronos helped me out with Red Eyes...lure him out of his spawn zone, and run across the battlement to the other room, with the giant staircase that leads down to the entrance/cling ring. You can fairly easily trick Red Eyes into falling all the way down while he tries to stab you, and you'll still get credit for the kill.
I'm trying to like it. It was my most anticipated game of the year, and now that I have it, I'm not getting into it. I love the difficulty -- It's the gameplay I have issues with most of the time.
I raped the red eyed dube on my first try as a Royal. I was pretty surprised that he was so easily defeated by that class.
It's so frustrating ! My local EBgames didn't shipped enough copy for the pre-orders NOW I HAS TO WAIT! I really want to play the game now :P
I would so buy this game if I had a PS3. I need a good tough as nails game every now and then to keep things interesting.
@Jonathan
That's a really great idea. I'll try it next time I play. Thanks@
@Pedro
What are you having issues with? I'm quite happy with the controls and everything.
@Sadistic
I bet you raped him you sick fuck. But seriously, I can't wait to try a royal.
@Kraid
That's frustrating, hopefully you won't have to wait too long.
@Jordan
I'd buy it even though you don't own a PS3, people seem to think it will be one of those Atlus games that ends up kind of rare. Plus it will give you incentive to finally pick up a PS3.
What Mr. Sadistic did in his comment is what you're supposed to do. Aka learn from your mistakes.
I did the EXACT same thing, sans Royal. I started a Knight, found out he was hard to use, switched to Thief, and now 50 hours later...
@no menu pause
Haha, part of the game is learning how to quick-nav menus! :D
I have dibs on the Temple Knights!
I feel weird just letting it sit there and idle when I have to do something else. Even if I'm at a safe place. It just doesn't feel right. Maybe I'm used to MMO idling or something.
@mrsadistic
Grow a pair of balls.
shut up nerd
your song
I die a little for every day that I don't have this game. But, seriously, I can't wait to pick it up. Just have to save a little more money before I can go pick it up. I'm pumped.
One of these days. ONE OF THESE DAYS!
I intend to pick this up when my budget allows, it looks amazing! All the glowing praise it's received from dtoiders isn't making my wait any easier.
This is truly the age of dragons.
I drove 20 mins one way (damn traffic) on my lunch to pick up my pre-order DEELUCKS EDISHAWN!
I can not wait to play this game!!!!!
Great reasons.
Also, having played the game for over a night, I cannot stress the need to block with a shield enough. Almost every single bloodstain I've seen (aside from the people that fall off the edges or attack merchants) have people running into heavy enemy areas and mashing the attack button.
Oh, in regards to pausing, the advice I got regarding that is if you need to go anywhere, just toss the menu open and exit the game. When you load up your save, you'll be in the exact same spot you started in, and it's much, much safer to just do that than risk losing all your souls.
@Jonathan
If that actually works I'll be forever in your debt. Awesome tip.
It does, same thing happens when you lose connection to PSN, you get booted and when you load back up your in the exact same spot.
The menu thing does actually work. I use it basically almost all the time. It's a pretty awesome save system too, since it actually saves/loads the game right where it last auto-saved. The spinning, blu-ray disc thingie at the top right tells you when it's saving.
I LOVE THIS GAME
Picture at the top is a lie. As long as you can run and roll you should have no problems beating Tower Knight. At least, I didn't.
So far, I haven't found the game to be too incredibly difficult. It's exactly like I suspected it would be; it's Medieval Megaman, and more about memorizing patterns and committing actions to muscle memory then it is about being a good player or anything.
I had to arrow'd the tower knight. I had some leftover arrows from taking down the red dragon (get the bow from the top of the second parapet, go buy 250 arrows from the blacksmith, stand at the top of the first parapet and pop it in the face every time it flies by. Lather, rinse, repeat. Then go loot the corpses, should be a winged spear in there if you didn't already get one from the red eyed knight, and backtrack to 1-1 to loot the dragon's roost. Be careful of that tail, it will beat your ass. ) I'm currently under stocked on magic items to put Flamelurker in his grave, and unwilling to go play another level to grind up so I can actually USE that purple shield. I need to get back a pile of souls I lost near the bugbears on 2-2 and then go buy some sticky white stuff to use on my +4 halberd after I run out of soul arrows.
pfffft this game looks lame I totally wont be getting it because its shit and lame and...
* jealous european ps3 owner :'( *
@Ed
Awww, I really do feel bad for you European gamers. First Blazblue and now this. Hopefully you'll get a release some day (BlazBlue did) otherwise you should definitely import.
So far I only beat that slimy boss monster, the one with reinforcements. And let me tell you, after hours of trying to finally memorizing and getting past the castle and then defeating that beast, I have never felt so satisfied playing a game before. I was truly happy that it was my raw skill that got me where I am now.
Of course, I died shortly after twice, second time trying to get to my blood stain. I found out the hard way that if you don't reach it and you die again, you lose all the souls on that blood stain. and I had 5000 souls left on it...
Brutal.
after 1-2 Im stuck at 3-2 by the maneater, I should do the 2-1
Fuck that maneater, dude. It took a blue phantom and a meat cleaver to get me through it. Sprint past it to the fire braizer on the central platform, it'll block his magic attacks. Make sure you're enchanting your weapon with magic or sticky white stuff, and cut off the tail first. If you can beat the first one before the second shows up, it's a war of attrition. If not, well, get your ass eaten and try again. If you have a good bow, grinding through level 4 gives you a great way to level up. You can just drop into 4-4, destroy the baby stingrays with the storm ruler and gather 25k souls a trip. More with the ring that gives you more souls and soul thirst.
