About Me

Whats up Destructoid?
My name is Sean McLoughlin and I've been sent from the futurepast to march with my fellow robots to victory. For Niero!

My favorite games can be numerous (as I'm sure is true of most here at Dtoid), but my all time favorites are Final Fantasy VI, Diablo II, Bioshock, Braid, Demon's Souls and Metal Gear Solid. I never rent games and I rarely trade in or sell the games I buy so I have a pretty massive game collection. For the sake of space I'll just list the consoles and portables that I own: NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Advance, Playstation, N64, Playstation 2 (one original which is broken and a Slim), Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, Neo Geo Pocket, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi, PSP 2000, Xbox 360 (red-ringed once), a fully backwards compatible Playstation 3 and a Wii.

When I'm not in school or gaming you can probably find me reading a science fiction/fantasy novel or an issue of Wired or some such. My favorite authors are George RR Martin, Terry Brooks, Garth Nix and Terry Goodkind. I'm also a big fan of movies, my favorites right now are The Departed, Smoking Aces and Crank, although my all time favorite movie/director is Reservoir Dogs/Tarantino. I don't watch much TV and if I do its usually Discovery channel or Science Channel. I love Professional Wrestling, Y2J SAVE US! My favorite band is obviously The Grateful Dead although my musical tastes are quite varied. I listen to everything from T.I. to Metallica to Toby Keith. Also, MC Chris FTMFW!

Bored? Why not try one of the games I've made:

2D is back on XBLA
DaedHead8 | 6:11 PM on 08.19.2009 22 comments

Ever since the Playstation was released and 3D graphics were made possible, it seems that most developers have left 2D gaming in the dust. That's a shame because there are a lot of things that 2D games can do that 3D games cannot. Well, I'm proud to proclaim that 2D gaming is back! At least on the Xbox Live Arcade. Ever since the inception of the XBLA, it has been home to some of the finest 2D games available on home consoles today. And today, with the release of Shadow Complex, the bar has been raised.

Shadow Complex will likely to go down as one of the finest 2D action/adventure games on the 360. I’ve decided to celebrate this by highlighting some of the often over looked 2D games on XBLA. These are games in my collection that I feel are not getting the attention they deserve. So once you’re tired of Shadow Compelx, give these other games a shot:

Trials HD

I love Trials, it’s no secret. Although it’s part of the Summer of XBLA ’09, it is undoubtedly the least popular of the lineup and for no good reason: MVC2 is a straight port and TMNT is a mediocre remake. Meanwhile, Trials HD is one of the best sequels in years. Sure it has the awesome ‘Splosion man and the amazing Shadow Complex to contend with, but neither of those games should get in the way of at least checking out the demo of Trials HD. It takes the addictive gameplay of Trials 2 and combines it with the best level design yet seen in the series. I’m serious; just take a look at Let’s Get Physical, one of the earliest and best examples of the game’s physics engine and awesome level design. Things get even crazier as the game progresses. Seriously folks, don’t miss this one.

Worms 2

The Worms series has enjoyed cult classic status for far too long now. The first Worms game on XBLA did a little to attract mainstream attention, but the shallow weapon list and easy achievements meant people didn’t stick around long. It’s a shame this wasn’t the game to come out way back when because this is the game that will knock people’s socks off. Its main attraction is the much improved weapons list, which brings back old favorites such as the holy hand grenade and super sheep. Also included is a much longer single player campaign and more robust multiplayer options. If you were at all interested in the first Worms game on XBLA or any of the classic PC worms games, you owe it to yourself to check this game out.

The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai

The Dishwasher has the most old school mentality of all the games on my list. There was some hype for it pre-release but that fire was stamped out by average reviews and weak sales. The game is awesome, despite what some of the critics think. I suspect they are upset at the game for its punishing difficulty level. It essentially forces you to play through it once on the easiest difficulty; because you can carry your experience and items from play through to play through. Trying to start out on normal with no upgrades is basically suicide. Don’t let this turn you off from the game though, the combo system is deep and new weapons that are unlocked throughout the game only make it deeper. Combine that with a long story mode with interesting comic book style cut-scenes and we have a winner. Multiple modes beyond the Campaign will keep you playing for a long time to come and oh yeah: You can turn on your Guitar Hero or Rock Band guitar and have a friend riff on it to help you kill enemies. That alone makes it worth purchasing.

Mr. Driller Online

Going from dark and gory to cartoony and light hearted, here we have the XBLA version of Mr. Driller. Since first discovering this puzzle game on the Playstation I’ve been utterly addicted to it, buying new versions as they came out. And I can say without hesitation that the XBLA version is one of my favorites. It has a large cast of characters, online leader boards and of course, achievements. Naturally, the block busting/platforming/puzzle based gameplay is intact and as fun as ever. If you’ve never played a Mr. Driller game, this is the perfect place to start.

These are just four of my favorite 2D games that have been released on XBLA. I know there a lot more out there, so tell me in the comments what your favorites are.

You know, I don't really see the hype of the Summer of Arcade. The only thing I found interesting was MvC2. I downloaded the demos for Splosion Man and Trials HD, but neither of them are something I'd pay 15 bucks for. I still have to give Shadow Complex a go though.

It's good that DLC on all consoles has brought 2D back.

I'm a sucker for Braid and would have got Lumines if it wasn't so damn expensive.

Blasphemy!

Everybody knows the best 2-D game on LIVE is Alien Hominid. :)

I don't gots a 360, so I can't say what my favorite XBLA game is. :(

However, because I feel like putting Sony into here, I will say that I have a PS3, I love the variety of 2D games on PSN, which may not be on par with what XBLA has but soon enough, I think it will, and so far, my favorite 2D game is Shatter because of my love for BreakOut-style gameplay.

Of course Alien Hominid is one of the best (I would argue that Braid is the best but opinions are like assholes after all). My goal here was to highlight some of the games people may not have heard of or otherwise passed over.

I had a lot of fun with Megaman 9 and Bionic Commando Rearmed last year.

Always up for a round of worms so I got that when it came out and I will be getting shadow complex tommorow.

Also I will just give NyxQuest a mention here which is quite a fun 2D platformer on wiiware.

Yay for 2D!

Viewtiful Joe needs to make a comeback in HD.

I would like to argue that the best 2D game on Live is Castle Crashers

How does Mr. Driller play with the awful 360 controller?

I still occasionally play Mr. Driller on the DC, and its a game that requires precision to avoid getting snuffed off, so I'd be a little concerned with the lack of precision from the controller.

Although it's not a 2d game, Aces of the Galaxy is a really awesome on rails Starfox-like shooter. I didn't get a lot of attention which is a shame, because it's really fun and the online co-op works flawlessly, that is if you can find someone to play it with, but it has local co-op, something Starfox never had...

Also, while I only played it once at a friends, the Prince of Persia remake is really good as well. It's not as punishing as the original SNES version, so you won't throwing controllers at your walls.

Splosion Man was an incredibly fun game, despite a few points when I wanted to tear my hair out in anger. Best ending credit sequence ever. I'm enjoying Shadow Complex so far, I'm loving all the 2D fighting action recently, and Mega Man 9 is one of my all-time favorites.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I love 2D games.

Solid list. I'd add Splosion Man bc it kicks serious ass and is also new (and from twisted pixel). But yeah, the games I have on this list I love. And the ones I don't have, I want.
