The original source was from THE LOS ANGELES TIMES, but I grabbed this from Comingsoon.net.
"The Los Angeles Times says that lawyers for 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have agreed to let a federal judge decide whether Warner Bros. will be allowed to release Watchmen on March 6, forgoing a jury trial that could have put the high-profile film's future into even longer limbo.
In court papers filed Monday with U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess, attorneys for Fox and Warner Bros. jointly said they would let the judge decide Jan. 20 whether Fox could block the film's theatrical distribution as Fox has been seeking all along as part of its copyright infringement lawsuit against Warner Bros.
In a preliminary ruling issued Dec. 24, Feess said Fox, and not Watchmen producer and distributor Warner Bros., owned the right to distribute the film. Warner Bros. is a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Fox is owned by News Corp.
In his December ruling, the judge urged the warring studios to negotiate a settlement, but no deal has been reached."
Fucking Fox. I have no worry that this movie will come out at least around the time that they originally planned, but still....fuck you Fox and your money grab.
I can't believe that somebody dropped the ball on ownership of the distribution rights. I'm sure that heads have already rolled. It's unfortunate that Fox is taking these measures, even though it is completely understandable why they are. Allowing for judgement is dangerous though, because legally, Fox probably has the upper hand, and the film release will be delayed. If Warners and Fox had come to an agreement on some sort of cost share we wouldn't have to worry.
I REALLY want to see this movie, and wish it didn't come to this. If Zack Snyder's cut of the movie is screwed with by Fox management after they reclaim rights to the film, that will be the ultimate travesty to come from the whole situation.
