KOTOR--I'm Playing It Wrong?
DJMegaMatX | 1:54 PM on 09.06.2008 20 comments

Based on king3vbo's advice, I decided to give Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic a second spin on the 360. I have enjoyed some BioWare games in the past, particularly Icewind Dale, but found the quests on the first planet of KOTOR a bit of a slog.

Getting to rescue a captive Jedi after a Flash-quality racing minigame was when the game was finally starting to feel like the Star Wars I remember. The Jedi Chick mentions you are Force Sensitive and probably are eligible for Jedi training, but then the game puts you on another quest to get codes to leave the scumbucket excuse for a planet.

I'm totally stuck at a point where I'm in a Sith Base and have to battle a Jedi. Credits are in short supply and it is a hassle to wander back and forth to purchase enough healing items to survive. The game is too hard since there is no healing spell at the beginning, but I'm assured things do get better. I've reloaded a zillion times and died even more. The Force is not with me.

Is it because I am playing KOTOR wrong? Too many years of playing JRPGs have made it so I approach console RPGs with a certain mindset-KOTOR is geared towards the PC RPG style of gameplay. Anyone else have this kind of issue with the game?

It's been a while since I've played KOTOR, but if I remember correctly the Heal Power for Light Side charecters and the Drain Health for Dark Side ones are available pretty early.

No way man, its easy as pie to get the codes. I usually go melee when i play kotor since you're going to be a jedi anyway. If you're using blasters its going to be hard. But usually that guy is easy to kill. must be how you set up your character or who you took with you.

I don't remember having problems like that. I'm having a hard time picturing where you're at, though.

I can't remember any problems like this in my playthroughs either :/

Don't you have a healer Jedi with you at that point?

i think hes still on taris. i usually give healing as bastila's first jedi power, seeing as how that power isn't availible until you get to your jedi training.

@ Sharpless the sith base right after you rescue bastila.

@ DJ you cant really spam attack and hope to win you need to use all the skills you have to either stun or slow your enemies. that or you didn't choose heal as the first force power for bastila. if not i hope you have a save point for before you rescued her

I don't remember having any issues like this, but I am an extreme completionist, so I would always kill everything I could, and so I assume my levels were substantial enough.

Maybe you're just not levelled up enough? I always kept as many medpacs as possible and kept my Force Heal up. Are you remembering to level up your allies, too? Ranged support often saved my ass in the lower levels.

I did not choose Heal as a force power as I stupidly had the computer choose for her to level up automatically. Might try with a different loadout of characters....

Yeah, never trust the auto-leveling.

The fact that you're playing it on the 360 means the Force is with you. The backwards compatibility with that game is horrendous.

Or you could, you know, just turn down the difficulty for that one battle...

Or, follow what these guys are sayin'. But, KOTOR is one of my most favorite games of all time, so make sure you finish it, it's a hell of a game!

It has been a mighty long time since I played the game, so I can't remember exactly how to get you out of the tricky spot your in. However, I seriously doubt you're playing it wrong. I completely suck at RPG games, and I managed to finish it. Just keep trying and remember -- if all else fails, hit up the net for cheats/walkthroughs. May the force be with you.

After talking over with my sister, who his the KOTOR nut of the family. Seriously, I lost count of how many times she finished the game after 30 play throughs. She recommended Bastila and Carth for your party. T3-M4 is good... but not at that part of the game.

Look at your weapon settings and feats too. Don't hand someone a dual bladed sword when all he manages to do is stab his foot. Carth's good with two-handed blasters, Bastila's great with the dual-blade lightsaber, but make sure your character is armed with what they're good at. Also, make sure they NPC's are leveled up with their abilities. Don't level up Carth's dual sword ability since he's great with guns.

Also, auto-level up is evil. It might take longer and a while before you understand what each feat or skill does, but it's worth it in the long run when you're developing what kind of character you have.

If need be, complete every side-quest you can. Even though they're long, they do award you with EXP at the end. Try the dueling arena or opening random locked doors in the apartment complexes. Sometimes you can find people that need help... or places you can steal items from, plus it's also good for grinding.

That's pretty much it. Hope that helps.

I thought the game was to easy personally :-(. Just remember to use your force powers all the time and remember to use your shields / medkits if your in a tough spot. It'll click eventually.

If you lean towards the light side, i think that you can get a lot of free stuff in certain areas of the game. u probably should never auto level up because that system sux.

I'm pretty crappy at KOTOR games, but Thermals / Mines do high damage in a short time if used right.
