With the recent Dark Knight movie coming out, my memories drifted to one of the first SNES titles I owned--Batman Returns, a Final-Fight clone featuring the Caped Crusader himself.
Apart from a few Batmobile levels, the game features an impressive MIDI rendition of Danny Elfman's dark score from the film and follows the movie's plot really closely. You get to wail on many clowns, fight the Penguin and Catwoman, and smash enemies into background objects (windows, posters, and brick walls). Some levels go into a side-scrolling mode, making gameplay a bit like Kung-Fu at times.
Bosses in the game are pretty cheap. An early fight with Catwoman gives you little room to move around and Catwoman's fast moves can slice up the slow Batman in a flash. One nice touch is that you get to see an expanded ending depending on which difficulty you beat the game at--I was able to get to the final Penguin boss on the highest difficulty mode, but couldn't defeat him.
If you like beat-em-ups, Batman Returns is worth finding--and, over 10 years later, it still remains one of the best Batman games (not saying much, considering the competition).
Wow! I was just playing this earlier! It is my favourite game of all time, in fact earlier I thought I had been doing it on the hardest setting, when in fact I had forgot to change it from normal, heh. The music is amazing for this game! Especially 'The Penguins Trap' level.
When I was younger I used to play each difficulty setting in turn, making the game go on for hours : )
I just love the little touches in this game, like being able to remove a bit of plaster from the wall on the first boss battle, and being able to destroy background objects with the bad guys.
The other day I created in my mind a 8th level. I always thought it was weird that there was only 7 levels. My new level is set before the last one, it is another driving one, but this time you would be in the bat boat thing going through the sewers, being attacked by missile penguins... I have far too much free thinking time.
Anyway glad to see I'm not the only one who loves this game!
There was originally a level planned where you were on the Bat Boat fighting in the sewers on the way to the Penguin's Lair that was cut. One early ad for the game features pics of it--it sounds like what you are describing!
The Batman Animated Series game for the SNES is also worth a try.
Seriously?! How fuc*ing bizarre! I played a demo the animated series game on the megadrive (genesis), I wonder if it's the same game? That was good, I will look out for the SNES one then, I love Batman games (well Batman Forever and Batman and Robin were shite)
I loved the game too. Me and my friend took turns beating it.
The only thing that would have made it better would have been a two-player mode (but then again, you only have one hero in the film, and one bat-mobile).
Konami made some memorable games for the SNES and this was a shining example!
The company proved a great game could be made from a movie license.
It perfectly followed the Burton movie and the midi Elfmam score was amazing.
Just one helluva game! I'll never forget playing this one!
Thanks for the memory, DJMegaMatX!
