WARNING: This CBlog will contain spoilers for a few Zelda games, Wind Waker in particular. If you want to experience these gaming masterpieces that I'll be discussing to their fullest potential, I suggest not reading this and coming back after you've played 'em. Or not. Whatevs, see if I care!
Okay, so I created an account on this here DToid for one specific purpose: to let my voice be heard about my favorite gaming series of all time, The Legend of Zelda. Currently, Destructoid is having another one of its debates, which you can find
right here.
I already cast my vote in the comment section, but I figured I'd talk a little bit more about my #1 choice, as a few of my friends don't quite understand why I chose
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker as the best game in the Zelda series.
Way to go, Toon Link! You deserve it! And seriously, how could you not love this guy?
I know, I know...It's blasphemous, right? I mean, why not Ocarina of Time or even A Link To The Past? Gamers from all 'round the globe seem to recognize those two games as the pinnacle of the Zelda series and honestly, I can't blame them for that! They're both ridiculously amazing games. In fact, the choice for my number one title was probably one of the hardest decisions I've made related to a game, at least, (because certainly there have been tougher choices in my life) in a long, long time.
But I'll let you in on a secret: neither OoT or ALttP are in my coveted #2 slot. That belongs to
The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, which was a masterpiece of gaming in its own right, and in my opinion, hands down
the best handheld game I've ever played. Yeah, I went there!
But I digress. This is about my choice for The Wind Waker! So let's have at it, shall we?
Reason #1: The Back Story (Major Spoilers, obviously)
Every Zelda game has the same rough story...A Princess gets kidnapped by a malevolent force (be in Gannon, Ganondorf, Vaati or what have you) and a young boy wearing green has to rise to the challenge and save her and the entire land of Hyrule!
Wind Waker does all of this, but in a much more
interesting way than normal.
You see, in the beginning of the game, you're shown bits and pieces of some rather old artwork depicting the Hero of Time defeating and banishing the powerful and evil Gannon to The Dark World. This is one of the first of many nods to Ocarina of Time that will continue throughout the entirety of the game.
After beating Gannon and saving Hyrule, the Hero of Time leaves, which is possibily a reference to the events right before the start of Majora's Mask. However, it seems as though our hero didn't return after gallivanting around Termina to save the world from a crazed mask and a falling moon...
After a time, Gannon broke free and began royally screwing up the land of Hyrule. People died and, well, it was just a mess. So the Hylians did what they did best: they prayed to The Goddesses and the Triforce. The Goddesses decided to intervene and stop Gannon from controlling the Sacred Realm and Hyrule so they did something a bit drastic...
They flooded the whole thing.
Not Pictured: A Reasonable Solution.
So, the once great land of Hyrule became the Great Sea, hiding the beautiful castle and its lands deep beneath the waves of the ocean. All of this back story is just one part of a grand, grand story that unravels throughout the course of the game. It also happens to be just reason numero uno as to why I believe that The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker deserves to crown of #1 Zelda Game in this most illustrious series...

I plan on writing up several more reasons, but I figured I'd give y'all a break from reading for now! I suppose you could say that this will be a recurring series of CBlogs on the subject! 'til next time, same Bat(shit Crazy) Time, same Bat(shit Crazy) Channel, friends!
