Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I’m not saying piracy is good it’s just I feel it helped me a lot. And yeah to those people who still pirate; buy games/music you like, its important.
What if people started pirating Nintendo? Oh sure, in your dreamworld another developer would come and replace them, but you would still miss them, no?
I do think that when internet is more widespread and faster...that we'll eventually no longer be "buying" games... just purchasing a license to play them. The game itself may not even reside on our console or computer, but instead may reside on a server... with only one access that is paid for.
I do pirate video, particularly TV. If I miss an episode of Lost, I have no compunction about downloading the episode and watching it on TV via my PS3 rather than watch it on the network's website with their poor streaming video quality. I also occasionally pirate a mini-series I could have DVR'd but didn't or even a movie that has been out for awhile and is usually a "chick flick" that my husband has no interest in renting.
I did pirate one game in my life... and as you noted, it was a situation where I didn't even realize it was pirating. A friend gave me a "copy" of his PC game and I didn't clue in that it was essentially theft. Currently I always try to buy new copies of games from Devs I want to support... but in all reality, if I particularly dislike a dev I'll buy the game used and wouldn't even be adverse to a pirated copy.
Just to be clear, I'm not condoning piracy or anything like that. I'm just saying that a lot of people are quick to point to it as the cause of everything they think is wrong with the industry but if you look at the facts it doesn't really look like it has any major effect at all.
That thing about your friend, I still think that it should be legal to give a game to someone, just not make copies of it to give away. The original, developer copy should be the one that is legal to pass around.
Also, I'm a high schooler, and recently just exited the pirating trend, with my last game I pirated being Deus Ex (which to some extent isn't as bad as pirating a brand new game, considering the difficulty of finding it at retail, and the fact it isn't produced anymore.
But what really helped me get out of pirating was Steam. Overlord, Overlord II, AND the expansion pack for less than $10 dollars? Bought, downloaded, played.
Oh, and D-Roy, wouldn't you have had to mod a PS2 in order to pirate for it? Or am I sorely mistaken?
Well yeah, of course. I installed a chip in my Playstation and Playstation 2, there's more alternatives though, such as a boot-disc (which only costs a disc) and what not. Some of these "mods" allow you to play online as well. I'm not 100% sure of when it comes to modding the consoles of today (PS3, 360 and Wii), but I believe the principals are the same.
On another note: I think the piracy for the PS3 and Wii are extremely low, if not non-existent. Due to technical terms, such as Bluray.
