Cover the new regenerating Health?
D-Nez | 7:16 PM on 06.25.2008 10 comments

After Halo it seems a good amount of console shooters (many exceptions of course) adopted the regenerating health mechanic. Now it seems a lot of game have been including cover as a gameplay option. Is Cover a welcome addition and should be a tactical option in most shooters or should it be limited to games where the option is appropriate.

Personally I welcome a well implemented cover system. It was hard for me to go back and play Call of Duty 4 or Halo 3 after played Rainbow Six Vegas 2; I kept pulling the left trigger trying to take cover only to initiate some other action. I'm not saying RSV2 is superior to CoD4; I just really enjoy the manner in which RSV2 implemented their cover system.

There's a few upcoming games that I'm hoping include a cover system although chanes are they won't. Some of those games are Mercenaries 2, Far Cry 2 & Fallout 3(Although I hope Bethestha does cover better than Mass Effect - ME just didn't feel as visceral as other shooter experiences).

The way the cover is implemented also makes a big difference. In addition to R6V2 other games with decent cover systems were Army of Two, Gears of War and GTA IV when it what I wnated it to. Cover mechanics I didn't enjoy as much include Strangle Hold, and I know I'm going to get crucified for this, and Metal Gear Soild 4. I know that MGS4 is the end all be all of video games but the cover didn't seem up to the top notch design of everything else in the game. Not saying it was bad just dind't feel as fun for me as other portions of the game. Remember this is just MY opinion and I expect every single person will disagree.

Do you want to continue seeing cover as a gameplay option?

Finally, a newb who isn't a retarded trolling bastard.

Lots of games adopted the Halo system, only hold a couple guns at a time, get rid of the health packs, etc.

I can already tell you Far Cry 2 doesn't have the cover system (I played it!). Not sure on Fallout3 and doubt it in Mercenaries 2 (especially since everything can get blown the fuck up).

I enjoy cover systems alot. I think GoW did it the best.
As long as the system is half decent, requires a button to use (unlike Kane and Lynch) I'll use it.

Personally I hate the magnetic cover system, where you push a button to get your character to stick to a wall or a well placed box. I find it kind of annoying and I'd rather use cover without the game telling me what I can and cannot crouch behind.

Now, I might the only person who thinks this, but I think Army of Two did cover really well, it wasn't perfect, but it was a step in the right direction as far as cover goes. Your characters automatically adjusted to cover based on the height, and whether you were on the left or right side of it, and aiming caused you to pop up to shoot out from it. So it was all done automatically, and you were never stuck to it.

Also, I think MGS4's cover was more of a wall press for hiding than it is cover, because as a cover system, I agree it kinda sucked. It's easier to manually crouch behind things and shoot, I thought the same for GTA4 as well.

I'm not a big fan of regenerating health as well, it makes less sense than health packs in most cases, and those make no sense at all. I love the thrill of finishing a hard boss battle with a sliver of health left.

Here here! :)

I agree that cover seems the new standard, much like the over the shoulder camera is in third-person-shooters. I really like this system as it adds a (slight) level of realistic thinking to how you play instead of Halo where if you want to take a shot at someone you have to be out in the open (i.e. a sitting duck).

The only FPS I play is TF2 so I'm not the best judge, but I like it's cover system in which to get cover you duck behind something. I never understood the need for a separate cover action.

Also, Welcome to Destructoid :)

If it's for 3rd person shooters, I love me some cover system. I don't like the automatic cover system like Army of Two or Mass Effect. Even though the cover in ME is pretty solid for the most part, it just doesn't feel right to me, and Ao2...god, what a horrible system, it could never tell if I wanted to look left or right and a lot of them time I would end up shooting a wall while the enemy was standing on the opposite side to me. I did like the auto adjust for height, but it was still irritating.

I like the button press for cover, it's easy and effective, it ensures you wont stick to anything accidentally as you run past it and it means you are in control of the character ALL of the time; automatic shit pisses me off, I'm still waiting for a game where I get to reload using the analogue sticks/mouse to simulate emptying and loading my gun.

First person shooters I don't think so much, the 'peek' function is a favorite of mine, I think that works better than a pop and shoot cover system would work in a FPS. Being locked to a position in FPS mode would just feel a little weird to me.

And thats my 2 cents.

The pace of the game really should determine the type of cover system used. For example the system in GoW really worked well because you would use cover without thinking about it. But think if that system was in Halo 3 or Team Fortress 2, it would get little to no usage because those games feel to fast paced for a cover system like that. But this brings me to my point that you can't say one cover system is the way to go, yeah some may be better than others but in the end it really just needs to be custom tailored to the game.

and @ Kinji
I feel the same way, I miss having next to no health at the end of a boss fight :(

I have to agree that the style of game play should determine whether cover should be an option. In Halo it would feel out of place unless upcoming Halo (shooter) titles are redesigned - but then would it still Halo?

It is interesting to note how one person's favorite cover system could be someone else's least favorite. Some liked Army of Two some hated it and the same could be said about almost any of them. Although I haven't heard any comments about Rainbow Six Vegas' cover system..yet. These developers must have a hell of time trying to build game play mechanics that appeal to a broad range of people.

Ah, too bad all forum conversations couldn't be like this were people can still disagree but still respect each other's opinions...:/
