About Me
* I'm a jaded asshole with a chip on his shoulder and an overinflated sense of self-importance. I'm also notoriously lacking in the ability to let shit slide, so take that as a warning should you take it upon yourself to act like a dick-hole around me. I can dance all day motherfuckers.

* I have an old-school love of old-school games.

* I don't consider myself to be a hardcore gamer, if only because the term 'hardcore gamer' comes off like an elitist badge made for jerk-holes, so lacking in social skills that they can afford to spend the time and cash required to earn the label. Maybe that's not what it truly means, but we're all brought together by a love of the hobby, so fuck the bullshit labels and the horse they rode in on.

* I once killed a man just to watch him die. Then I skull-fucked the corpse.

* I'm still holding out hope that one day the Wii's potential will be met. Until then it's merely an interesting diversion.

* I'm a fan of gaming in all of it's forms, and think that being brand-loyal to the point of bias is silly, and gets in the way of truly enjoying the hobby.

* I don't have anything else to put here now, but can't stop typing these stupid bullet-points.

Anyway, all that aside, I'm just here to have a good time. Any like-minded individuals can feel free to add me to their friend's lists.

Whatever happened to thinking for one's self?
Cyberxion | 7:51 PM on 11.28.2007 22 comments

There used to be a time where being able to think for one's self was lauded. Now it seems that everywhere you turn, people are being motivated by bias, operating under a hive-mind mentality. What's worse is that should you exercise your ability to think freely in the vicinity of such worker-bees, you catch shit for it.

I dunno, I just think that we'd all be better off if we stopped letting our bias' allow us to become complacent. If something questionable happens out there, we should be able to stand back and look at it objectively, rather than as a yes-man or a tool. And we should be able to let our opinions be heard without being made to suffer backlash from people who can't separate themselves from whatever it happens to be that we're opining on, and that they're so in love with.

That shit doesn't happen enough. People on the whole are too invested in shit to step back and call BS, much less stand for those who can actually think for themselves. It's fucking pathetic. People put shit up on pedestals, and fuck anyone who dare to attempt to tarnish their golden idol!

Whatever your beloved may be, learn to step back and look at it in an objective light. The world aint as rosy as you might like to think, and there's a chance that no matter how much you love something, someone else might have a few things to say about it. Try listening. Fight the urge to be a dick. It benefits everyone in the end.

Everyone is just like that and everyone hates that kind of person so everyone hates themselves.
A lot grow out of it like you, though, so good for them.

Apparently it all ends here with Dtoid, because it helps us think.

I'm as objective and unbiased about everything as I can be. I occasionally get in debates but most of the time I don't bother responding because the other person is just being an idiotic dick about it.

I wish I could exercise that level of restraint Shadow. However, it's in my genetic code to drag idiots through the mud when they challenge me. Or maybe it's my overinflated sense of self importance. Either way, I often spend entirely too much time debating stupid shit with idiots.

By the way, the whole bias-driven yes-man thing was something I had to come to grips with over the years. I used to spend way too much time arguing about which console is better, and why Game A is so awesome. After awhile I realized that it amounted to nothing more than the same stupid shit that I had come to revile. In my opinion nothing motivates a change in behavior better than realizing that somewhere along the line you became what you hate.

ZOMG you go against Dtoid thinking, burn! A WITCH!

But this seems out of left field. Thinking is for winners! I lose?

I definitely agree with you. I hate Halo and personally don't understand why it's so damn popular and every time I open my mouth and express what I think, I get trash talked into a corner. I've all but given up at attempting to make my thoughts known on some games because I know that a bunch of mindless drones are going to yell at me for thinking differently.

It sucks, eh aborto? You're automatically labeled a troll, are told that you just don't get it, or are treated like a pariah just because you don't follow the popular line of thought. Or sometimes all of the above.

Even still man, if you feel passionate enough about your opinions, then let them be heard and fuck those who give you shit for it right in the eye. Of course this sort of thing is a two way street. You got to give if you expect to get. Just don't let the more abrasive of the hive-minders get you down.

BSD, it's not entirely out of left field. That said, I'm purposefully remaining vague about the genesis of this post because I don't want to cause a shit-storm followed by a shit avalanche. It is relevant though, in its own way.

Seriously though, in my quest to become enlightened, I have pretty much started disagreeing with everyone. Not because I hate everyone, but just to get discussion going. People will talk to me about something I agree about, and just because I'll call them out and argue against it, because there's nothing more boring than everybody agreeing.

It's pretty fun.

Sometimes I can't walk away either. I had a major problem with it in the past but I'm getting better. It eventually just starts feeling like a major waste of time.

Wow, ironically enough, Jeff Gerstman just got fired from Gamespot for sticking to his opinion in the face of advertising. It's sort of relevant to this post, in that Eidos and CNet apparently didn't dig what he said, so fucked him in the ass over it. Huh.
