So My PC has been buggin out showing it might have a couple of months more left, and well looks like I will need to upgrade to a new one sometime soon. So of course who do I turn to for support! my Dtoid Community :D I wont throw this one out, but it has been lagging on today's requirements and Crysis just bitch slapped it for trying to install it.

So I was considering investing in a 64bit station that will work with Vista Ultimate (only way to get DirectX10, sorry XP) and get it prepped for the next 2 years. Also I am a building PC junky, I like to build my PC's but Let me know if you guys think this is a good buy, If should wait a bit longer on each peace or if I missed the compatibility test:

(Everything im getting it from Newegg)

So what do you guys think? Is this the best deal for a 64bit system or could you top this with better a better deal? I know its a bit pricy, but at least I know if you got this set up from a brand like Alienware or Dell XPS, it would cost 3-6k possibly even more. So this is why I prefer getting my hands dirty to save a couple of bucks.

Don't listen to Brain. Nothing wrong with Macs, other than they're horribly overpriced. You can get parts cheaper than that, lurk moar.

Motherboard - Not really an expert on motherboards. I usually go with EVGA myself, but it doesn't look like there's any price difference here. To be honest, I usually go based on what the reviewers have to say...

Processor - Great Buy! I actually have that proc! Great for overclocking as well!

Video Card - I would actually recommend the 8800GT. They are just a bit faster and Newegg actually has some for the same price as what the 9600GTs are. This is the one I have (soon to be in SLI though!) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130318

Memory - Once again, I'm not too familiar with many RAM benchmarks, I've just always been an OCZ user. You're going 8GB though, or did you mean 4GB?

Hard Drive - I'm an owner of the Raptor as well! Would highly recommend it, even if it is a little more expensive than other HDDs. As for the second one, 750GB for $160 - that's what I paid for 150GB!

BRD/DVD Burner - Can't really comment on. I haven't got into the whole Blu-Ray thing yet, but I do have a PS3!

Case - Matter of opinion I guess...whatever floats your boat. Looks pretty out there! As long as it has a transparent siding!

Power Supply - Should be fine. It is usually recommended that you have at least 500-550W for SLI (I think), but I think that's overestimating it by a little.

Oh, and I also forgot to mention that with two 8800GTs in SLI they can keep right with two 4850s in Crossfire as far as benchmarks are concerned. Crossfire can be a little weird sometimes...

That mobo is wayyy overpriced. You don't need to spend that much on a mobo, even for a gaming rig.

Also, I have that Rosewill power supply. It says "SLI ready", but 600W isn't that great for running modern video cards in SLI. You'll probably want to go with at least a 750W if you're planning on going SLI.

I would personally get a cheaper mobo, and use the saved money to get a better PSU.

Looking good, I'm just starting to get into building PC's, so can't really offer advice or anything, but I know I've checked out some of that stuff before, I really dig the case.

I thought this was how Linux and Macs are Unix based and Windows is BIOS based and lots of companies and stuff are switching to Unix.

Oh, and also... I'd recommend a dual core wolfdale proc (i.e. Intel E8400) for gaming and overclocking. More cores isn't always better, the code has to be optimized to utilize all four cores. Most games are optimized for dual-core.

-PL- made a good point about the motherboard. Although, it is a DDR3 supporting mobo and your RAM is DDR3. That's why it's so expensive. If you wouldn't mind going back to DDR2 it would be a heck of a lot cheaper. There's really no major performance increase either from what I've seen. Maybe ~3-4% at the most...

As for the Quad Core vs. Dual Core, Quad Core gives you a larger epeen...I kid, I kid...

lol @ get a mac.

crunshii, although your hardware choices are pretty good, vista still isn't worth it and neither is DX10. just my 2 cents - it's a gamble either way.

hoping windows 7 isn't just vista sp2...

I hate to sound like Windows Defender™ here, but I actually have been enjoying my Vista 64 ultimate since I built my new comp. The instability is very over-exaggerated... The only game I've had problems with is Final Fantasy XI, which is a terribly made game to begin with. They released a Vista patch though, and it works fine. I've never needed a "vista patch" for other games, they all work fine.

All that being said, I haven't seen any reasons to choose vista over XP in terms of graphical ability. I haven't noticed a difference between games running in DX10 or DX9 mode, in what few DX10 games I've actually played. Maybe it'll get better in the future, but so far I haven't been blown away by DX10.

Obviously, it's your money to spend how you will but some of these selections feel like overkill. As has been established, the motherboard is extremely expensive due to its DDR3 support. DDR2 is laughably cheap these days and would make much more economic sense in my eyes. Same concept for the optical drive, you can pick up a good DVD re-writer for about £25 over here so I'm guessing about the same in the US. Personally, whilst the BR drives and media are so stupidly overpriced, I would stay away, you can almost guarantee that they'll start dropping exponentially within a year.

As for the processor, aside from bragging rights, quad core gives little advantage if you're not doing anything that will specifically take advantage of it and you could exchange the two futile cores for some extra speed on a dual core.

hey guys wow thanks allot! got more feedback that I expected.

forgot to mention that I also do heavy duty photoshop/aftereffects/3DSMax,Maya,XSI/Dreamweaver/Vue/Zbrush/Painter/Flash/Video Compositing,Editing on the side apart from gaming, lol.

Therefore need the power to Handle all those programs, rendering speed and real time speed. Need the HDD speed, quad core +64bit + DirectX10 for Rendering speed. Then the rest is for real time editing like photoshop ect ect.

oh also, teh reason for that MB is for its Bus speed, quad core support, DDR3 memory and dual SLI support. I honestly don't know how much the difference is between DDR2 and DDR3 but I know that I want 8g of Memory so I never have to worry about not having enough memory. Bus Speed is where everything is at, so everything needs to be at its max speed.

yea the mobo is WAYY overpriced, also if youre gonna get a quad core go for the g92 8800gts for graphix, more bang for your buck

Well if you do that kind of work a quad core is going to help with render, also the 64bits processing.
Not sure about Vista yet, havent tried it, I settle with 32 bits and directx9 for the moment. Also I dont have experience with the blu ray burner.

I will go with another video card like the 8800GT and not the SLI choice.

Mostly good comments from the comunity, the one that fails is the MAC one.

what Mobo you guys recommend for the rest of the set up im getting?

Was thinking about the BRD burner, not so sure if I should wait, I most probably will so I will hold off on that and get the priority stuff first. So the 8800 GT VC is better? ok thanks I will switch then to the 8800GT if you guys recommend it, I know I am making it SLI duo.

Yea lol Mac lol, I actually work @ work with both PC and Mac. I like some features but I hate most of it.

I have that same case and PSU. The case is pretty fucking huge so make sure you have enough space to fit it wherever it is that you're putting it. I've had the PSU for about 6 month, it works nicely and hasn't given me any problems.

I built my first gaming PC about 2 months ago, so I should be able to help out.

MB
Like everyone else stated, that motherboard is waaaaay overpriced. You should stick with DDR2 RAM memory instead of DDR3. DDR3 just came out and I don't know if they have worked out all the kinks yet.
I went with a Nvidia 780i SLI motherboard. Its one step down from the 790i and it will run three video cards if I seriously want too.

Processor
Quad processor for gaming.... People told me to go with dual and I did. I went with the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale. 3 ghz processing speed will run anything. Its also cheaper at $190

Video Card
I agree with what other people said about the 8800 video cards. I in fact went with a 8800GTS. A little bit more, but it will play anything in high settings (except crysis, cause I went with a BFG 512mb 8800gts and XP)

BRD/DVD
Seriously? I wish I had your money....

Power Supply
You should go with something above 700 watts IMO. You wanna run 2 video cards, then you need some more wattage. 600 is kinda meh and I rather be safe than sorry.

$2000 for a gaming computer is crazy IMO. You also have to still get the operating system, keyboard/mouse, monitor, etc. Unless of course you already have that stuff, but still 2K....

To save a few bucks, get a cheaper motherboard, somewhere above at least $150; drop the blu-ray and get a regular dvd/cd drive; and stick with 4gb ram (8gb seriously? Crysis recommends 2gb at the max....)
