Everyone who is into RPG, jRPG, MMO, or just heard the word Final Fantasy from the suckage that the movie was, should read this blog and leave your condolences... Yesterday... January 22, 2009... in the game of Final Fantasy 11, a game loved and hated by millions has had the most terrible ban hammer ban in MMO history. [i]"In November 2008, we discovered an issue that allowed players to create multiple items for certain treasures and rewards in areas such as Salvage and Assault by exploiting the game system. The issue was fixed during emergency maintenance on November 26, 2008. However, we discovered that some players had already exploited the issue and used it to gain additional items before it was addressed. We then investigated more than a year's worth of logs throughout all areas. As a result of the investigation, approximately 400 players were temporarily suspended based on the evidence gathered. Approximately 550 players who committed more serious misconduct had their accounts banned. We are working hard to ensure that these kinds of issues do not occur again in FINAL FANTASY XI. However, if you discover any problems with the game system, please submit a GM call or fill out the feedback e-mail form to report the problems to us, instead of exploiting or spreading the issue. We thank you for your cooperation in this matter."[/i] 
Over 1000, of the most hardcore players have been banned from the game. Due to a glitch in a Quest called "Salvage", players who used this glitch for their advantage used and abused it. Players were able to use some sort of glitch to duplicate expensive items. Expensive items they were able to sell and make millions of gil, or even duplicate clothing. 
Most of these bannings people would ignore, but if it werent for the cause that top players from all servers were hit by this. Its like the top Dtoid bloggers get banned in one shot, then the rest left where did the great niero go!? its at this level the ban in FF11. People who been playing since 2002-2009, dedicated most of their life to this game attaining hard to gain very hard to earn items/ equip / weapons, relics (weapons that take 1-2+ years of building up to attain final level. http://www.bluegartrls.com/forum/ffxi-advanced-player-discussion/68852-r-i-p-players.html http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/?topic_id=1326&page=6 Someone named Minidragon was considered the best FF11 player of all servers due to obtaining most of the hardest and nearly impossible end game items in the game. Even items from the monster yall read a while back... from the monster people took 18 hours barfed and got sick trying to kill and still failed to kill, this player was able to beat him and obtain some of his most known items. They exploited to do some things that tosses an economy awry. They cheated. They got banned. No tears from me.
Too bad such a thing can never happen to Maple Story. But then again, that's not a Squeenix company. lol
but anyways...I don't see why it's a "sad day". Squeenix is just doing their job. This isn't a sad day for anyone except for Square as this probably killed most of the huge FFXI players.
It's not Diablo 1. They aren't playing by themselves. This is a game with a balanced economy. People know when they're cheating, and shouldn't complain when they get punished.
Anyway, it ironic that Square Enix is punishing people for a mistake in the program that was initially their fault.
Also, is it just me or is this economy the wrong one to start denying long time consumers business forever? They aren't just alienating them from FFXI... they're probably turning off these people from SquareEnix games in general.
But this scares me even more. Its a GAME. It is not the end of the world if someone cheats. To ban this many of your most hardcore players, is just insane. Perhaps they want the game to die? This goes far beyond punishment for most of these players; im aware of how much time and effort XI takes to make progress.
I'm betting right now that there will be a huge ff11 boycott.

The latest new thing is that the game is now more enjoyable than ever before. With huge tons of missions, quests, monsters, new areas, jobs, items, and more importantly, the level grinding.
SE now added something called "lvl sync" which removes this burden, now anyone from any level can use lvl sync to level with their friends, whether your lvl75 lvlin with lvl10, you will still get good exp lvlin with the lvl 10 player. + allot of exp bonuses the game gives you to ease the pain of lvl grinding.
Yes teh banhammer sucks, yea, SE should revise it because it was their fault for the glitch, yea its the players fault for knowing that they were cheating. In either case, the hardest thing to comprehend is that the people who were band, had the most hardest end game items to obtain, they could have sold their characters and pay their college tuition or gotten a new car. but now its gone.
the backlash of this may end up getting you your profile back out of the sheer bulk of complaints from players.
Also, the title of this blog lead me to believe someone at SE died o.o

When you exploit something, even if its not your fault you will be the one blamed for it. It's called cheating. Even if its in a game. Real world example. Go to Vegas and attempt to cheat at one of their games and see what happens to you when they find out. Its no different than what happened here. You get your ass thrown the fuck out and never allowed back. And don't tell me they didn't know what they were doing, people playing as long as they have, like you said, knew exactly what was going on. This is coming from a former 3 year WOW veteran. Does it suck? Yes it does. Is it the end of the world? I hope to God not.
If the install base is a few million, and 1000 people got banned its under 1% of the total number of people who play the game. Just saying.
That being said, they still aren't afraid to ban people. If you think this number is high, back in November-December of 2008 they banned almost 10 000 people for using bots.
