So I played my way through the demo of Forced Unleashed and came away relatively disappointed in the whole thing. Then I read the reviews of the full game which basically confirmed my thoughts on the demo and decided not to get it. Then I remembered that the game was launched for the Wii under a different developer. Maybe it didn't let people down as much. I jump around and read some reviews and they all say that the controls are tight and well done but there's a lack of polish to the game since it seems a bit rushed.
Wait, isn't that the exact opposite of the reviews for the 360 and PS3 versions? Everything I've seen says that the 360/PS3 versions are insanely polished and well put together down to the finest detail and compliment the Star Wars universe really well. Even Dyson said this. But on the flip side the Force controls are wonky and the bad guys aren't fun to fight against. Now I look at the Wii version and I've got well mapped motion controls, fun action gaming and some actually interesting game mechanics that work well but I have to put up with under developed AI and glitches because the team didn't put enough effort into it? So really if I want to the experience that I expected out of the game I have to buy both versions and play the Wii version while some how experiencing the polish of the 360/PS3 version? Screw you LucasArts.
But it isn't just LucasArts, is it? It's the entire industry. If they got the power they don't think the gameplay matters that much and if they have good controls and unique gameplay then the quality can be damned. Where does this thinking come from and why should we accept either version of this game with such blatant flaws when both versions show that it is possible for the other version's flaws to be fixed? Why was the Wii edition rushed out the door when they knew it was working well? Why was the technology clearly more important than the gameplay in the 360/PS3 version. It's symptomatic of how all three systems are approached, with a focus on one aspect or quality of the system and not the entire picture.
Really it's just fucking annoying and I won't be buying either version of the game.
But what if we could merge the two together... hmmmm... I'll get back to you on that. :p
How can you not be interested in throwing people through doors!?
In all seriousness though, I think the fact that LucasArts laid off a bunch of people in turn, had somewhat of a hand in this turnout of the game. Way to screw it up LA :(
Layoffs?
I thought George Lucas found out that half of the staff didn't like his new movie.
Wii edition includes more levels and multiplayer.
I hope this teaches some people that just cause it has "Star Wars" in the title, it must be good. That needs to die. NOW. If we kill off that misconception, George Lucas loses 80% of his powers.
I mean "just cause it has 'Star Wars' in the title, it doesn't mean it will be good"
I'm leaving out some integral words today.
What about the technology behind Lucas' Fracture? Will it be technological funhouse without "gameplay" fun also?
We will see but, it seems to me ALL this generation of games ( 360 / PS3 / PC )... Are just tech demos. Or companies scrambling to update their engines for the NEXT Gen of consoles. When they start to care about fun again.
Maybe it's the cost of this tech. As pointed out in some reviews for SW:FU... That have caused the developers to stretch the dollars. Out a little to thin, or heavy in some areas?
Hopefully the COD:WAW & GTA for the Wii aren't so drab "Rushed" as to their other techno babble godlike brothers.
@Rockvillian - Here, here! I've been saying this for years but their games still sell like crazy. Stupid Star Wars tits.
Force Unleashed couldn't hold a candle up to Jedi Outcast in my mind. I also believe it suffers from trying to be on every system under the sun. Where is the focus?
Whenever I see a game being released for EVERYTHING, it makes me wary. Either they pulled together amazing resources to make all those versions good... OR they are just cashing in as much as possible on their crap game. And these days, it seems to be all about the $$$
And where the fuck is my next gen Tie Fighter? Fricking Star Wars has been an on and off again relationship of pain and love for years. Might be high time for me to just swear that bitch off for good.
So it's safe to assume you have no love for the people involved with this game, eh?
I've finished the Wii version and it's actually pretty good. It's a complete wagglefest, but still fun. Then again, the game is only 6 hours long and it looks the same as the PS2 version.
The controls are really a mixed bag though. In the final boss fight the game shit on me with one of the motion QTE's where the last one in a series wouldn't register at random. There are combos going like: B (jump), B, wiimote-downwards. Which practically never works unless you hold the thing horizontally and move it straight down. Or things like: B, forward+A to jump and dash forwards in the air, only to have to do an attack AFTER that.
Basically you end up using Force push and Force lightning to run and slash your way through everything but the last level. Still, the story is epic and waggling your way through the levels was more fun than 99% of the wii games out there. I wasn't even thinking about buying the 360 version, but maybe I will get it just for the story alone. You know, to play through the canon story whenever I hold a Star Wars marathon again.
Maybe rent both of them?
It's a real shame, because your disappointment echoes my problem with the design of the Wii. Why can't we have a 360-level system in addition to "innovative" controls? It would certainly open up the possibilities for game design; Dead Rising on Wii could actually do some new stuff with the game instead of compromising so much of the game in order to add new controls.
@BlindsideDork
And the 360/PS3 version has achievements and doesn't look like shit. If the extra level is earth-shattering, then I'll relent, but the Wii should not be anyone's primary version, if they have another console. Maybe buy both, but not just the Wii. Not on my watch.
Shaprless: He watches all.
Go play Jedi Outcast, that is a true Jedi game.
I also agree you 100%, this shit is getting out of hand with so many ho-hum, could-have-been-better-but-aren't-games being released. Mercenaries is another one of these kinds of games. What the fuck is going?
Fable II better be good, that's all I'm sayin'. If not, I'm giving up on this generation for a while and going to play old arcade games and NES games.
The generation of broken promises and over-hyped trash. That's all it's beginning to be. Amirite?
It comes from the 2006 Mass Brainwash by Nintendo. God, they fucked us all while we were smiling like idiots.
Necros: I'd argue with it, but it's pointless :P
I'll probably pick this up once the price has dropped/there are more used copies around, but I don't really care enough at present. I do love Star Wars, but not enough to get this apparently mediocre entry into the mediocre star wars games series.
I'll probably just rent the Wii version and be done with the whole thing. What about the multiplayer? any good?
I got the PS3 version and it is pretty sweet.
I have next to no problem using the force controls (I hardly ever use my lightsaber), never hide behind cover, and it just plays well. I am owning with the upgradable combos/powers and selectable lightsabers.
