So after being both shocked and appalled at the number of people who had never played Sam and Max after hearing Rev. Anthony's Rant I started storming around shouting things like "Damn kids and their three dee vidja games! Don't they know how to point and click anymore? It's all shoot this, shoot that!" Then I wove my cane in the air, lost my balance and fell over.
But this was fated because I fell over and hit my head on the Wii and I thought to myself, "Jeeze Cowzilla3, you're being terribly hypocritical considering you hadn't played Super Metroid until a few months ago. Oh and whats that over there? Its your copy of Secret of Mana you've also never played. Aren't these classics? Why haven't you played them." Then I sat up and after having a vision of a flux capacitor and scribbling that down I thought I should do something about this. So I'm going to educate myself. One game a month (hopefully) and I'd like everyone to join in. It doesn't matter if you've played the game before, it'll be a fun chance to play through it again with a group of people.
Bascially, and I'm still ironing some stuff out in my head, I'll choose a game every month. Kind of like a book of the month club. It'll be a game everyone who considers themselves "hardcore" should have played at some point. Then anyone who wants to join in the "Educate Yourself: Game of the Month Club" can procure a version of the game and play through it. At the end of the month you can do a post on it (I will be doing a recap blog at the end of the month) and we can all have a rousing discussion. Also I hope to work it out with Snaileb so that once a month part of FNF will be playing this game (if it's single player we'll just IRC or stickam or Vent or skype or whatever).
Thirdly, and this is huge for me since as you can see from my ranking I've never ever commented in the forums, I'll start a forum post to discuss the greatness or not so greatness of the game during the month. I'll recap what happened in it in my blog post but it'll be a good way to get help, talk about something you really liked or just post memes. This will start int he beggining of March once I've chosen the first game and recommendations are always welcome. Maybe I'll be the only one doing it and if so that is fine at least I'll be educating myself and will be semi-forced to play these games. If you've got any suggestions post em up. Hopefully we can all get some great gaming in together.
So how about it? Anybody else interested? Better header image is forthcoming.
I'm running out to cover a story so any questions will have to be answered at a later time.
Seems like it could work cow, but as I'm finding out from dvd's scavenger hunt it's hard to find time to go back and play older games while bright, shiny new games are constantly being released.
That's a cool idea. I approve. Which is not to say I'll overcome my laziness enough to actually participate.
I'm really, really interested on this, since I don't have to buy new games by now. This looks promising, so I will add you so I can check when you've updated.
This is going to be great. I'd love a video game club, because book clubs are for women :p Plus, the community FNF game of the week has been hurting a little bit, so of course this is will get whored out by me. I just hope everyone can COMMIT.
:)
I support it. Great idea
I am all for it. SIGN ME UP COWMENG.
Also, dont you mean beginning of April? Because its already March...
I'm all over this.
I'm out. Not because I dislike the idea but more along the lines of what Blehman said. With all the other games I have going on plus some other ones coming out in the future I probably wouldn't have time to fit in a game I haven't played from the past.
I'm sure I would be missed anyways *tumbleweed*
GTA4 is the only real game I look forward to. After that, Star Wars in august. PROVE ME WRONG!
This is a great idea Cowzilla but the only downfall for me is I have too many games I need to play as is. Plus Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 just came out and I know I'll be on that like white on rice.
But I will try to get in on the club...
Just as long as you don't sell me any Tupperware and Snaileb isn't trying to do a pedicure on me.
You should get Oprah to do this... then it'll be REALLY big... like
THIS BIG
I'm in. I've been meaning to do something like this anyway.
You haven't played Secret of Mana yet? Dude, there's your first assignment.
@ Snaileb: "GTA4 is the only real game I look forward to. After that, Star Wars in august. PROVE ME WRONG!"
Castle Crashers?
I'd be down.
Also Snail, book clubs are awesome. Don't hate.
This sounds AWESOME!
Its like a book club!
Except not lame!
@snaileb
I love the avatar Justice.
Sorry Dynamic, you're right. I want the game.. but Im talking about retail games that will take up my time. XBLA games are time wasters to me.. like N+. I love that game, but play it when Im bored for shits and giggles.
This sounds great; It's harder and harder for me to make time to get my games played as a married gamer who spends most of his free time game coding. This would be just the thing to get me back into more interesting types of games.
With less time to play, I find myself shunning a lot of games in favor of the sure-fire franchise retreads.
eh.. book clubs are for women with too much time on their hands or school mates that suck at Science and Math.
(all aboard the hate train)
You can count on my steel!
and I'm in!
Sounds like a pretty cool idea... Just as long as it doesn't become a list of almost all RPGs. :p
I don't think there's a gamer out there who doesn't have a "must play" game that they want to play but never got around to.
This sounds good, I look forward to more info.
I'd check this "group" out... I'm guessing you meant it'll start in the beginning of April?
Sounds interesting, I'm game.
You know I'm down. I've tried starting something like this before and people tended to flake at the last minute, but I'll support you!
I would join. I think you should probably tell someone at RFGO to mention this once everything is set.
I'm in.
This is a good idea. I've thought about doing something like this for awhile. A forum I used to post on had a video game club, where much like a book club everyone would start playing through a given game and reach a certain point by a given day. In between we would discuss and help out the people who were having trouble. It really gave me a deeper understanding of a lot of games.
sounds like a really good idea.
Wow, great idea.
This sounds very cool, I'm interested.
Oh you cow with your ideas...
Count me in. And about that Tupperware...
It sounds cool to me.
A great idea, as its important to at least try some cool retro games. It might be hard to do but kudos to those who try.
Perhaps a link between Retroforce Go and the community might help kick things into gear, as folks are more likely to get involved for some kind of loot or a bit of a prize plus recognition on the podcast.
Who knows, if things go well I might even join in.
How about we kick things off with Earthbound? It's fairly easy to get an emulated version if you don't have the original/system.
@Holyetheline
Personally I think we should start with something less turn based/time consuming. Something a little more beatable in under 16 hours.
But, this is Cow's ship, he can steer by himself :P
sign me up, or sing me up if you would like to write me a song.
Awesome! There are so many great games I've failed to play over the years.
Frankly something simple would be a good start. Mario Kart on SNES might be an idea with the Wii version. It can be played in five or ten minutes, and won't be so time consuming.
I will do this so hard.
Absolutely, totally in. I think all gamers have those blank spots in their education that need to be filled in and I'd love to get into some games I might have missed.
Wow. Did not expect this much response. I did mean April not March. Also there no restrictions for the "group" so you can come and go as you please. If you like one months game and not another then participate in that months and not the next months.
I will definitely be starting with a game that is not an RPG as I want to get into the swing of things. It'll be something that can be beaten within a reasonable amount of time and in between gaming sessions of more modern games. I am all to aware of the time crunch we all have with modern games coming out practiclaly daily so to begin we'll keep it simple. I guess you don't even hav eto play the whoel game, you could just blog about the first level. Anyway, to much details already. I'll have the first one up at the beginning of Arpil.
Glad you guys like the idea.
I will jump on board as long as we are talking about pc or ds games.
Just saw this now. Brilliant idea. Buttsex to you.
Think its more about stuff that some of us missed, probably before you started playing games.
Cow is onto something though. Many gamers these days don't know their game history, or really want to try to play anything that's not the latest stuff. That kind of thinking does the industry no service at all, as we should cherish and celebrate all of it (that's right, even the really dump stuff too, for some comedy).
I’d love to do this, but unless we’re talking about PS1 games that are available on the PlayStation Store, I have no means of playing retro games (no Genesis, no SNES, no NES, no Wii for VC, etc.).
