About Me
My name is Jason Cook, I am a English/journalism grad with a rabid interest in gaming and game writing. I have some reviews on Popmatters.com and would love to work for a gaming site/magazine someday soon.

Help out a fellow Dtoider by catching a criminal (shortblog)

Hey. I am going to be brief here as time is of the essence. But my 360/Wii were stolen. The fool has signed into XBL and is on right now. He changed my gamertag from Count Gr1shnack (I may be on some Dtoider lists from some FNFs) to Killa Eyes vF 7.

I don't know what ya'll can do, but I figure it can't hurt to have more feelers out there.

Thanks.

I know the cops don't normally give a shit, but if more than those two things were stolen, it could be a big deal to them.

Have you tried calling Microsoft and asking if they can track the IP? Or the cops, and telling them this? I know it's been done before.

Magnalon is right. Try calling Microsoft or your internet service provider and ask them what they can do, if anything. Good luck.

Unfortunately Microsoft support people were a bunch of pricks when my repaired 360 got stolen (I'm almost certain) by the UPS guy, so other avenues will probably be more successful. But give everything a shot, because there has to be something that can be done.

I've also heard of someone who was able to turn on his stolen xbox in the same apartment complex because the thief left a controller. Probably not the most likely way to get justice, but you never know.

One case is here

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/bronx/xbox_thief_is_xbusted_aCZZCVX9AERyYYstD4m5oN (thanks Falcon Reaper), but as I said above, the only reason the cops even tried was because he was wanted for 13 other crimes.

My 360/PS3/PSP were stolen last summer and it's a shitty situation to be in. Outside of the loss of hardware, the sense of violation is tough to deal with. My heart goes out to you man; I hope they catch the thief.

...Wow, this guy doesn't sound too bright if he's doing that with the Gamertag.

I second, third, and fourth calling Microsoft and the ISP. Even if their customer service is horrible, this should be a special case.

That's a really messed up situation man. I hope someone can help you catch this ass.

Also, I dunno what you credit card setup was with your 360, but don't forget to safeguard yourself against that sort of bullshit. You should be able to clear the CC by longing into Xbox.com for yourself. You could also change your password, I reckon, though I don't know how far/long keeping him at watching distance is going to benefit you or law enforcement.

I hope the thief plays MW2. I'm going to friend request him. Constantly join his games, and make sure he has a miserable time.

This is not acceptable! Hope the thief is caught and skinned alive. Well maybe not that extreme, but I'll try to help in any way I can. Best of luck to you.

So update: He logged on last night and deleted my friend list. Luckily, the e-mail is still attached to my account, so I am able to monitor him on Xbox.com.

He spent 800 MS points to change my gamertag and put in MW2. Apparently, you can have the police subpoena MSoft for the IP address, but as everyone already mentioned, customer service is not exactly easy to go through. Also, my XBL account runs out in a day or so, so I may have to ask them to extend it to keep watch on this dude.

I really appreciate all the support and will probably whip up a full-length post detailing the story because it's kind of insane.

Thanks again, you awesome community.

Hope it works out. And here's a wacky idea that might not go anywhere...but doesn't hurt to try...hit up Major Nelson on his Twitter account (http://twitter.com/majornelson). Maybe some strings can be pulled to get Microsoft to provide you with the IP info...or at the very least, he can point you to someone who can do some string-pulling.

second on pinging Major Nelson. He might get this sort of tweet once a week, but its totally your turn to be that guy.

Man, I had this same thing happen to me back in October. The bastards stole my HDTV, my room mate's 360, another TV and a laptop. I reported it to the cops and they sent a guy out to look the house over, but he didn't give a shit really. I thought I was covered by my room mate's insurance, but I wasn't so I've been out a TV since then. We also tried checking pawn shops to see if any of the stuff turned up but the pawn shop owners were assholes too. Though in your case if the guy is playing the systems then it might be a little easier to track down.

Somebody should set up a "Help Count Grishnack get a new 360 and Wii" fund. I'd do it, but I'm not that organized, and would probably screw it up somehow.
