Forbes.com recently published an article about the future of gaming and named top ten games that will be classics. Having played half of them, it’s an interesting list to say the least.
Played: Bioshock, Puzzle Quest, Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports and Rock Band
Haven’t: Portal, WoW, Brain Age 2, The Witcher and LoZ: Phantom Hourglass
I am not sure they hit on
any of these – but let’s stick with the ones I’ve played.
Bioshock, while very engrossing and enjoyable, is a flawed video game. The guns were way overpowered when compared the much more interesting plasmids, the life system was flawed, it wasn’t all that difficult and above all, I have very little desire to play through it again. I guess there are some cool scenes I’d like some friends to see, but play through the whole thing again?
While I played the far inferior Wii version of Puzzle Quest, it was a very deep puzzle/RPG that I could see myself playing somewhere down the road. The biggest hurdle I see here is that many of the problems with this game are easily fixable with a sequel. This could become one of the best puzzle games ever with a few simple tweaks – therefore, I doubt this version is going to be a classic.
Mario Galaxy is inferior in almost every way to Mario 64. That game is the classic of the modern Mario’s, not Galaxy.
Wii Sports, to put it simply, is awful. I haven’t played it since about week two of owning my Wii. It was great to show off to people who didn’t know what the system was about and is still moderately entertaining to those who don’t game much, but it isn’t deep at all, has spotty controls and gets a pass because it’s pretty much free. Wario Ware is better, many of the myriad of other Wii mini-game games are better.
I see Rock Band going the way of guitar hero, releasing sequels until it is no longer profitable. Who’s to say that Rock Band 2 won’t have better songs, nicer peripherals and better graphics? I also find it hard to envision people bringing out dusty drum kits, guitars and the microphone from the attic for a vintage session of Rock Band in 10 years. And isn’t this just an evolved Guitar Hero?
As for the rest of the list, The Witcher sticks out like a sore thumb, WoW has potential and could be like Starcraft (maintaining a die-hard fan base for years), Phantom Hourglass is a weak Zelda choice, Brain Age is less of a game and more of a tool and Portal may have the best candidacy for the “classic” label.
I agree that Bioshock is a flawed game gameplay wise, but I still think it will become a classic because of the story and how it's told.
Galaxy sucks.
WiiSports isn't even worth opening (I have yet to do so with my copy).
I never played PuzzleQuest and have no intention of ever doing so.
I've never played WoW but certainly understand how and why it will indeed become a classic.
Rock Band will get whored out and fall by the wayside.
Portal is already a classic.
Brain Age isn't even a game.
I have no inkling of an idea what Phantom Hourglass is about, but I bet it includes saving a princess, a classic in the making.
I at least heard the way your decisions effect the game play in the Witcher was a compelling reason to play it. Compelling enough to warrant classic status? I'd hafta play to know for sure.
/two cents
Who cares what they think.
Bioshock, Galaxy, Portal, WoW and maybe Rock Band and Wii Sports would probably all be on someone's list.
Conclusion = Forbes is still dumb, but this isn't totally without merit.
That is all
Anyhow I'm with count grishnack. Most game sites would probably pick these games.
And are you kidding me??? Of course Wii sports belongs on this list. Any game that keeps my dad's attention aside from space invaders is a sure classic. (Except for RE:UC. Even as a non-gamer he shares mankind's propensity for blasting zombies)
