wow that is a great idea it would unfortunetly most likely not be posible
That’s very interesting, Corak. See, I think that’s what EA was going for when they introduced the radio announcer (you really have to play the game for yourself to understand it). I mean, he gets excited when you throw a bomb down the field or stuff a run in the backfield for a loss. But somehow, the whole experience just feels “off” because you don’t know who the guy is. Using hometown radio broadcasters would completely change that.
I always left the commentary on in my football games, because it just seemed like the natural way to play the game. Plus, we aren’t at the point yet (and I don’t know if we ever will be) where commentary in sports games actually sounds like it does in real life — i.e., a fluid, back-and-forth conversation. With that limitation taken into account, Madden and Michaels in Madden NFL 2005 weren’t that bad, and with the way commentary works, you’re bound to hear some repetition eventually.
Sadly, I just don’t think your idea is doable. Recording audio from 32 different radio broadcasting teams would be a massive undertaking, and it’s a logistical nightmare. And since so many people just turn the commentary off regardless, EA would probably consider it as something not worth the effort.
Corak:
Tha's a fantastic idea...while I agree with Samit's take of being a nightmare to do I could also see people who play the game actually enjoy a feature like that. Hell I'd even pay for that.
That feature you just thought of would be a fantastic addition to say a baseball game. I would LOVE hear the baseball game covered by our Yankee commentators.
Food for thought.
Yea I knew it was wishful thinking when I thought of it, and yup it is a massive undertaking. And EA seems to be going the way of buying companies rather than putting extensive effort into their own franchises lately.
The catch would be getting those that turn the commentary off to turn it on if they liked the announcers. One of the coolest things I remembered about my sports game experience was getting my PS2 a month after launch, and putting Madden in and hearing his voice in the game. I felt like I was watching the game and then realizing I was playing a game.
I agree that we are not at the point, and possibly won't ever be, where the announcing in the game will be as it would in a live broadcast. But just because something is hard doesn't mean it can't be done. Granted I don't see or expect this happening ever, but if game companies want to be innovative you have to think outside the box to do something that no one else has.
See that idea would be awesome, EXCEPT for an NHL game.
Why NHL you ask? Most American teams have possibly the stupidest announcers ever. I have the NHL package, so I have every hockey game available (Be it from my country, Canada, or America). The number one problem with these broadcasts is that the announcers are robots who are just there to pick up a pay check. When EA makes an NHL game, they use probably the best Announcer in sports, Jim Houston. His voice is well known throughout the league, and he has alot of sport knowledge.
With the exception of maybe Buffalo's announcer, I couldn't see any other American teams having a good announcer.
Course, I would probably want to kill Bob Cole If I had to hear his bias opinion every time I play one of my friends and they pick the hometown failures, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Course, My Lovely Anaheim Ducks and I destroy them so it makes me happy.
Virtual broadcast teams have never been to good but the recent mlb 2k games have done a good job of making the broadcasters seem alive the nfl2k team was also great but had a very limited amount of lines
i think the idea is pure genius. but i hardly expect EA to do something that awesome. too much work for those guys.
If the new commentators for madden 09 are joe buck and troy aikman i swear i will never play the game again, great idea by the way, but agree it would be very tough to sell the idea to EA
