So, the other day I randomly decided I needed some new retro games to play, and I got a little carried away on Amazon. The games have been pouring in over the last few days, and every day has been like Christmas. Today the final game got here, so I decided I would take pictures and show yall what I will be doing for the next few weeks.
1. SNES Game Genie
I know there are different opinions on the use of Game Genies on the site, but the bottom line is this: I'd like to see the ending of Super Ghouls N Ghosts. So sue me.
2. Star Fox
One of the great gaming embarrassments I've lived with is that I never played the original Star Fox. I had the Nintendo 64 version on day one, and beat the ever living hell out of it, but before now I never played the first. After playing it, I can say that...It's alright. The graphics are sweet baby Jesus awful, but it's pretty fun. I wish you could have a reticule to aim with in 3rd person view, but eh. I also never realized how Star Fox 64 was so close to this, with a lot of the same levels and everything.
3. F-Zero
Fuck yeah, F-Zero. I only rented the game as a child, but it left an impression on me, and after buying it now, I think I'm having even more fun with it than I did as a kid. It's simple, it's fast, and it's fun.
4. TMNT IV: Turtles in Time
I ordered this a few days before the XBLA version was announced. I think I'm a prophet. TMNT 2-4 have always been 3 of my favorite games of all time. I owned all of them when I was a kid, and since I have begun rebuilding my collection one of my milestones was reclaiming TMNT IV, and I finally did it. I think I'm going to play through it as soon as I finish this blog. It also completes my collection of TMNT 1-4.
5. DKC 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble
Again, the Donkey Kong Country series has always been a favorite, some of the best platforming this side of Mario. I beat DKC 3 in the last few days, and I think I know why everyone says it's their favorite: It's easy as shit. That's not a knock against it, it's an amazing game, but it really is easy compared to the first two. And the world map is kinda fun to dick around on. DKC 3 completes my obsessive collector's quest to own all 3 games.
6. Final Fantasy II
Somewhere in California, Naia just came. I have to be honest, I never played FFII until they rereleased it on the Loading Time Extravaganza PSX version. Owning the SNES version means I own FFII-FFXII, and all I need is the original NES game to complete the collection. Though I think I'm going to have to hold off starting a new FFII game until I finish my current playthrough of FFIII (I'm currently grinding Gau before I go to the Floating Continent).
7. Spiderman X-Men: Arcade's Revenge
I know, this game really isn't that good, but it's one of my childhood SNES games, which means I have an odd obsession to own it. It was hard as balls when I was young, it is hard as balls now. The Game Genie and this game will be meeting soon.
8. Toy Story
Like a lot of licensed games during the 8-bit and 16-bit era, Toy Story is not bad. It's a solid platforming game with very nice graphics, and while it doesn't do anything amazingly, I always rented it as a kid but never beat it. This will be remedied.
9. Street Fighter II Turbo
I know there's a hundred versions of this game, I own 2 of them on XBLA. So why would I buy another copy of this game? Because it was one of the two first games I ever owned for SNES (The other one being Super Mario World obviously), so it holds a special place in my heart.
There ya have it folks. Now if you will excuse me, I have some SNES to play.
seriously, that game is badass.
I do recall some cool barrel puzzles though, some fun bonus levels. Other than that though, no fond memories.
For the life of me, I could never get past the second to last boss (might be off on that), but after using the level skip code to pas only that level - and I do feel dirty about it to this day - the rest of the game wasn't so bad.
Anyway, the dude at Walgreens near my house just gave me a bunch of his old games for free, and one of them was a SNES game genie. crazy!
I have played Turtles in Time but never had the chance to beat it. I should give it a try again someday.
Ugh, DKC3. It wasn't bad, in fact, I had a lot of fun with it. But I'll never forgive that game for getting rid of Rambi and replacing him with an elephant. Blasphemy, I tells you.
@Holmes - DKC is a 2d platformer. It's supposed to be "simple as hell". The beauty is in the level design.
@C2C - No, I didn't beat it 100%. Of course it's harder if you do. I'm talking about the fact that you could save after every level, and weren't charged in-game currency for it.
@ Holmes
That's because DKC has always been kind of overrated. They're enjoyable, but they cannot hold up even next to the contemporaries of Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island. The main thing it had going for it was the graphics - and of course, the music, but I love Rare's DK and Banjo-Kazooie music to an unhealthy degree.
