About Me
I am the Deputy News Editor at Destructoid. I write about videogames for a living. That last sentence is as awesome as it sounds, though not always in the ways you might think.

I also play host to Destructoid's live streaming satellite studio, Couchtoid. From there, we broadcast Backlog, an attempt to work through my stack of old games one hour at a time (Weeknights, 10pm Pacific) and Saturday Morning Hangover where Dtoid writer Jordan Devore and the always lovely ImpossiblePlant play often painful games for your amusement (Saturdays, 10am Pacific).

I'm fond of all types of gaming, either on a screen or a tabletop. In terms of video games, my interests vary wildly from platformers (2D preferred) to RPGs and the occasional FPS. The greatest game of all time is Mega Man 2 and any suggestion otherwise will be met with swift vengeance.

The mere inclusion of Rodney Dangerfield can vastly improve anything. Films, music, toasters, anything. In particular, the force of Rodney Dangerfield could elevate video games to the level in which they are accepted by the mainstream as a true art form, bringing together people of all races, creeds and tax brackets in peace and harmony.

RIP Rodney.

Sony Video Gives Details on In-Game XMB, Google Search
Conrad Zimmerman | 1:47 AM on 06.30.2008 13 comments

Sony has just added a new video to the Playstation blog, showing off elements of the 2.4 firmware update for the PS3. This video features details on the in-game XMB. It looks pretty much like the XMB we're all used to, but I really like the access to PSN games direct from games since it minimizes the amount of menu flipping that might be necessary.

In-game soundtracks isn't quite implemented yet but appears to be on the way. Will it be ready in time for 2.40? Doesn't sound like it, so 360 fanboys might at least have that to lord over PSTriples for a little while longer.

All in all, it looks to be pretty sexy and offering most of the features that have seemed a bit lacking. If there's one thing we can always count on from Sony, they're doing what they do with style. Oh, and there's a clock! Woo hoo!

One somewhat odd thing that kinda bothers me about this, though, that it doesn't seem to pause the game you're playing automatically to bring up the XMB. I would think this to be an essential feature. If you're cruising through the XMB, you're obviously not playing the game, why not pause it automatically like the 360 does? I can just see gamers all over the world watching in horror as their character dies, dimly, behind the XMB because they forgot to pause.

A second video detailing the trophy system will be arriving in the coming days.

Trophys huh? Sony's answer to Achievements?

"Obviously you can't play two games at the same time" YET! :P

Huh? I don't see how the in-game soundtrack feature wouldn't be in the next update. He just said it probably won't look/work like he showed in the video.

Also, the current XMB never stops the gameplay when you press the PS button, which I constantly forget every time I play a PS3/2 game. I'm pretty sure, that with the latest fw update, the PS button still won't stop the game. That's what I've heard anyway.

The in-game soundtrack is in, he showed it off while playing Pixel-Junk Monsters.
He didn't mention in-game voice chat that was rumored to be in there, so I wonder if that's going to be in.
Also, I don't think the XMB ever paused your game, and if it did, it was up to the developer to add it in if they wanted. Some games like GTA4 auto-pause when you hit the PS button, but some games don't.

It's nice that this updates finally coming though.

Damnit, why am I at work, where Flashvideos don't run well and I don't have any sound...
I still does look sexy though and I want it.

From the video (emphasis mine):

"Another great feature that the 2.40 firmware update lays the ground for is the ability to play your own music stored on your hard drive in game"

This could just be a poor choice of words on his part, but I interpreted that to mean that it might not be fully implemented yet.

Also I'm would say thats the correct choice of words, just that they aren't satisfiyed with how features like in-game soundtrack are implemented yet. From the looks of it seems like a functional idea but a bit weird to scroll over to the music player itself to skip and pause. Holding the PS button and using the shoulder + start buttons sounds like a better idea to me.

I like the option to not have the in-game XMB paused if I don't want to, for whatever reason; tapping pause then the HOME button is not exactly a mean feat.

Cheers for the update, buddy!

Where's the ability to invite people directly into your game?

Where's the feature to chat privately with your friend's during games?

Come on Sony step it up!!!

Damn... "play music directly on your hard drive"...

But what about the music I'm hosting on my media extending server!?!?!?!?!?!
That's all the music I care about.

Well, for the most part, I'm pretty happy. It'll take a few hours to import all my music though. I have to burn them to CDs, and then import them. Is there a better way?
