About Me
I am the Deputy News Editor at Destructoid. I write about videogames for a living. That last sentence is as awesome as it sounds, though not always in the ways you might think.

I also play host to Destructoid's live streaming satellite studio, Couchtoid. From there, we broadcast Backlog, an attempt to work through my stack of old games one hour at a time (Weeknights, 10pm Pacific) and Saturday Morning Hangover where Dtoid writer Jordan Devore and the always lovely ImpossiblePlant play often painful games for your amusement (Saturdays, 10am Pacific).

I'm fond of all types of gaming, either on a screen or a tabletop. In terms of video games, my interests vary wildly from platformers (2D preferred) to RPGs and the occasional FPS. The greatest game of all time is Mega Man 2 and any suggestion otherwise will be met with swift vengeance.

About Rodney Dangerfield:

The mere inclusion of Rodney Dangerfield can vastly improve anything. Films, music, toasters, anything. In particular, the force of Rodney Dangerfield could elevate video games to the level in which they are accepted by the mainstream as a true art form, bringing together people of all races, creeds and tax brackets in peace and harmony.

RIP Rodney.

On newfags, oldfags, memes and drama

I see a whole lot of people bitching and whining about how the new users are taking all the piss out of Dtoid. This is how it has been since I came on to the site in the first place. And you know what? I suspect it's been going on a lot longer than that.

People have a complex about seniority where a site like this is concerned. It's like finding out about a great bar that nobody knows exists but becomes popular a few months after you become a regular. Do you like all of the people who are now coming in to a place that you feel a personal attachment to? Of course not. The difference is that, on the internet, you don't have to walk up to that fratboy/hipster/gangsta/whatever and say to their face that they don't belong here and that they're ruining the experience for you. It's fucking wrong and, to be honest, I'm a little ashamed of the attitudes that some people are expressing. It shouldn't be about the length of their tenure, but the quality of their contributions

By the same token, the new users can be a bit annoying sometimes. I understand and even agree with that. If they don't understand the way the memes work, they'll figure it out and/or they'll leave. The ones who stick around will probably be the sort of people who will fit in well with the site.

Memes are usually stupid, but they're fun for people and can be a great way to foster a spirit of unity within the site. We all have in-jokes amongst our friends and that's what Dtoid users are. We're friends. I can relate to the frustration which results from a post on which hours were spent being shoved of the first page in a matter of half an hour because of a running gag. But when's the last time someone got bitched out for reposting a high quality cblog at a time when things have died down?

That's what we should be encouraging people to do. And it's something you guys can help with, too. If it's a meme-heavy day, why not drop a comment on some poor schmoe who got caught in the crossfire suggesting that they might want to repost it because it was good work and you don't want it to be overlooked? We can either complain or we can work together as a community to find solutions to these things. Up to you guys, really.

In the future, there will be a community-moderated system for the cblogs and functionality to ignore the blogs of people whom you don't want to read the posts of. That stuff is coming down the pipe as quickly as we can get them in, so you'll have further options in the future. But, for the time being, I'm sure we can all come up with ideas on how we can help users, both old and new, be respectful of one another and still have a good time on Dtoid.

Well said, but just sucks when certain individuals do nothing but bitch no matter how long they've been here.

"The ones who stick around will probably be the sort of people who will fit in well with the site."

That is a best case scenario, not always the case. I won't call anyone out but there's one mother fucker who I know has been here for at LEAST 6 months, and I could literally count on one hand the number of comments I've seen from him that WEREN'T bitching about the collective maturity level or calling someone an idiot or something to that effect. People like that just bring the whole vibe of the site down. One bad apple and whatnot.

Don't forget that there's a lot of chill D-toiders who have been here from the start and are 100% happy with the website as it stands. We could give a shit about seniority and we'll love the new people no matter how retarded they are and we'll join in with the memes even though they're retarded too.

Like you said Conrad, the drama pops up every few months, but we all got each others backs. It's all good!

So long-story short: oldfags need to stop flaunting their seniority, and newfags need to "lurk more" and learn about the site before they make a social faux pa. Pretty much what I was thinking too. I've never had an issue with new users unless they come in and try to turn Dtoid into something it's not, and I think it's ridiculous to separate the community into "old vs. new."

That being said, crazy idea here: make "Meme" a cblog tag and when the new cblog options come, offer the option to filter those out. Granted, the first few posts probably wouldn't use it, but it would help filter out the later posts.

Sometimes it bugs me a tiny bit when I write a long article and it gets pushed off the front page by the meme-of-the-day, however it's a trade-off: If I were doing my own independent blog I would never have to worry about getting "pushed off the front page", but then I wouldn't have many people seeing my stuff in the first place. Sometimes the balls-out, let's-do-whatever atmosphere of Dtoid can be slightly inconvenient, but it's because of that atmosphere that the site is fun for so many visitors, some of whom might even end up looking at my blog.

So err, I guess what I'm saying is that even though it's definitely not a perfect system, there's a lot to like about it, and I think many of us feel that way.

Conrad you've written well-reasoned argument, but let me express my frustrations using a bit more tact than last time.

I hate it when people, whose names I've never even seen before, want to lecture older D-toid members about the "meaning" of our community and what we should or should not do as D-toiders. I always saw this community, for better or worse, as a parody of those sites who took video gaming way too seriously. Destructoid has always been light-hearted, entertaining, and extremely cynical towards our culture. The newest influx of members is perpetuating the exact opposite ideals.

Granted, the community is a culmination of its constituents, and I appreciate that. However, I also believe that if we don't distinguish ourselves from other communities; that we are doomed to be as bland as Kotaku and Gamespot. I love this community, and I have witnessed several of my favorite people leave this site recently for the same reasons.

So I'll leave you guys to your business. I'll be back when I'm off the rag.

That's a good bit of advice there about the reposting. I've often been confused about what the etiquette there is but maybe in the future I'll think about reposting something if I feel it got rather drowned out by some gag posts.

Meme tag Idea is damn good Necros. And I agree with what Conrad said about just re-posting a cblog if it gets pushed down by a string of Memeblogs, just make sure its not a failblog and Im sure none of us will complain about you re-posting it.

CountingConflict fucking wins.

@ Conrad

To use your bar example, when everyone starts finding out about it the owner and bartenders of said bar begin to change the atmosphere to make it more friendly to the new people. Slowly it looses all that once made it that same bar you used to love to hang out at. Then all the patrons that were there since day one of the bar start to leave because they have realized it's not the same even though the owner has started to put up signs and constantly point to the fact that we're the same bar we've just been changing. Doesn't that last sentence seem a little contradictory? Now I'm not saying change is a bad thing but when it comes at the expense of the people who were most faithful to your bar in favor of the new kids because there are more of them and they make you more money and you try and say you haven't sold out, I say give me a fucking break of course you have.

Fuck what Dtoid has become. (This is like a litmus strip.)

I didn't say it was horrible, I said "Fuck what Dtoid has become." It's not what it once was, but I didn't say change was bad. It's the way it changed, after reading the fights between Neiro and Workman I saw how much of a childish dick Neiro had become. Dtoid (to steal Gamegoblins analogy) started as Wild West fun meaning there were almost no rules and you made the experience what you wanted it to be, then it moved to Block Party fun, which had more rules but still allowed for a great deal of freedom and it's now at Clean Room fun, which is fairly self explanatory.
