I see a whole lot of people bitching and whining about how the new users are taking all the piss out of Dtoid. This is how it has been since I came on to the site in the first place. And you know what? I suspect it's been going on a lot longer than that.
People have a complex about seniority where a site like this is concerned. It's like finding out about a great bar that nobody knows exists but becomes popular a few months after you become a regular. Do you like all of the people who are now coming in to a place that you feel a personal attachment to? Of course not. The difference is that, on the internet, you don't have to walk up to that fratboy/hipster/gangsta/whatever and say to their face that they don't belong here and that they're ruining the experience for you. It's fucking wrong and, to be honest, I'm a little ashamed of the attitudes that some people are expressing. It shouldn't be about the length of their tenure, but the quality of their contributions By the same token, the new users can be a bit annoying sometimes. I understand and even agree with that. If they don't understand the way the memes work, they'll figure it out and/or they'll leave. The ones who stick around will probably be the sort of people who will fit in well with the site. Memes are usually stupid, but they're fun for people and can be a great way to foster a spirit of unity within the site. We all have in-jokes amongst our friends and that's what Dtoid users are. We're friends. I can relate to the frustration which results from a post on which hours were spent being shoved of the first page in a matter of half an hour because of a running gag. But when's the last time someone got bitched out for reposting a high quality cblog at a time when things have died down? That's what we should be encouraging people to do. And it's something you guys can help with, too. If it's a meme-heavy day, why not drop a comment on some poor schmoe who got caught in the crossfire suggesting that they might want to repost it because it was good work and you don't want it to be overlooked? We can either complain or we can work together as a community to find solutions to these things. Up to you guys, really. In the future, there will be a community-moderated system for the cblogs and functionality to ignore the blogs of people whom you don't want to read the posts of. That stuff is coming down the pipe as quickly as we can get them in, so you'll have further options in the future. But, for the time being, I'm sure we can all come up with ideas on how we can help users, both old and new, be respectful of one another and still have a good time on Dtoid.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

"The ones who stick around will probably be the sort of people who will fit in well with the site."
That is a best case scenario, not always the case. I won't call anyone out but there's one mother fucker who I know has been here for at LEAST 6 months, and I could literally count on one hand the number of comments I've seen from him that WEREN'T bitching about the collective maturity level or calling someone an idiot or something to that effect. People like that just bring the whole vibe of the site down. One bad apple and whatnot.
QFT. Exactly what needed to be said.
Like you said Conrad, the drama pops up every few months, but we all got each others backs. It's all good!
Thank you Conrad.
Thank you DToid.
No Thank you Johnny Depp, unless Public Enemies is amazing.
Nicely said!
The thing I like to remember to stay calm is that it's the internet....
Also, thank you for writing this.
That being said, crazy idea here: make "Meme" a cblog tag and when the new cblog options come, offer the option to filter those out. Granted, the first few posts probably wouldn't use it, but it would help filter out the later posts.
So err, I guess what I'm saying is that even though it's definitely not a perfect system, there's a lot to like about it, and I think many of us feel that way.
I actually like the idea of a Meme tag quite a bit...
I hate it when people, whose names I've never even seen before, want to lecture older D-toid members about the "meaning" of our community and what we should or should not do as D-toiders. I always saw this community, for better or worse, as a parody of those sites who took video gaming way too seriously. Destructoid has always been light-hearted, entertaining, and extremely cynical towards our culture. The newest influx of members is perpetuating the exact opposite ideals.
Granted, the community is a culmination of its constituents, and I appreciate that. However, I also believe that if we don't distinguish ourselves from other communities; that we are doomed to be as bland as Kotaku and Gamespot. I love this community, and I have witnessed several of my favorite people leave this site recently for the same reasons.
So I'll leave you guys to your business. I'll be back when I'm off the rag.
What a coincidence, your mom's on the rag too...

I too like the idea of a meme tag.
Good times are in the pipeline.
don't tempt me, you know I love complaining :P
Good post is also good.
@ Conrad
To use your bar example, when everyone starts finding out about it the owner and bartenders of said bar begin to change the atmosphere to make it more friendly to the new people. Slowly it looses all that once made it that same bar you used to love to hang out at. Then all the patrons that were there since day one of the bar start to leave because they have realized it's not the same even though the owner has started to put up signs and constantly point to the fact that we're the same bar we've just been changing. Doesn't that last sentence seem a little contradictory? Now I'm not saying change is a bad thing but when it comes at the expense of the people who were most faithful to your bar in favor of the new kids because there are more of them and they make you more money and you try and say you haven't sold out, I say give me a fucking break of course you have.
Fuck what Dtoid has become. (This is like a litmus strip.)
I for one welcome our new robot overlords!
