About Me
I am the Deputy News Editor at Destructoid. I write about videogames for a living. That last sentence is as awesome as it sounds, though not always in the ways you might think.

I also play host to Destructoid's live streaming satellite studio, Couchtoid. From there, we broadcast Backlog, an attempt to work through my stack of old games one hour at a time (Weeknights, 10pm Pacific) and Saturday Morning Hangover where Dtoid writer Jordan Devore and the always lovely ImpossiblePlant play often painful games for your amusement (Saturdays, 10am Pacific).

I'm fond of all types of gaming, either on a screen or a tabletop. In terms of video games, my interests vary wildly from platformers (2D preferred) to RPGs and the occasional FPS. The greatest game of all time is Mega Man 2 and any suggestion otherwise will be met with swift vengeance.

In particular, the force of Rodney Dangerfield could elevate video games to the level in which they are accepted by the mainstream as a true art form, bringing together people of all races, creeds and tax brackets in peace and harmony.

RIP Rodney.

EA Sports Gives Wii Its Own Line of Games
Conrad Zimmerman | 3:03 AM on 06.27.2008 6 comments

EA has announced that they have special plans in the works for Wii gamers, reworking their sports lineup into a dedicated brand. Intended for "players of all skill levels", this pretty much settles the rumors regarding peripheral-based play we've been hearing for a few days. Called "All-Play", the first release of the brand will be NCAA Football 2009 on July 15th.

Now, before everyone starts yelling about how blatant of a cash grab it is, I'm actually cautiously optimistic about this. Sports is a huge division for EA and launching a new brand is not something they do on a whim, no matter how crazy the new boss is. And while the sports genre has never been of great interest to me, I remember ignoring practically all of the titles I bought at launch to play Wii Sports almost every night for a month.

If EA Sports can fulfill their promise of a "very unique sports experience" in a way that feels accessible and fun, they could very well pick up a lot of consumers who just bought their Wii and never bothered with anything but the pack-in. Hell, they might even manage to get me.

The question is, if it fails, will Peter Moore be getting a tattoo of a Wiimote going up his ass?

i will at least be giving it a rent. my dad played blitz and the sega madden games and has wanted to start sports gaming with me again for a while. i offer to coach him up a bit and he says he doesnt want to play, then i catch him playing the 360 ncaa 09 demo late at night. if this can make it easier for him than it would be worth buying 2 versions

I think it's genius that they launch a Wii-specific brand. It allows them to position themselves as the #1 sport-games brand in the entire new market segment. It also sends the signal that the Wii-games will be different from the 360/PS3/PC versions of games.

We all know that any sports game that comes out for current-gen/Wii will be less good on the Wii as a dumbed down port; now they can just focus on making two distinct gameplay experiences and try to get consumers to buy both versions because of that. Genius!

Not that I care about those games. At all :)

Well, if it works out better than this past year's sports titles on the Wii, perhaps I'll give it a look.

What's odd is that the best sports game for the Wii isn't made by them; It's made by Konami. They somehow managed to turn their soccer game, Winning Eleven/Pro Evo into some sort of fast paced mix of sports and RTS with the Wiimote. It's fun.

Frankly, I think they'd be fools not to do this. Make your sports titles more accessible to all types of gamers on the system that's designed to be accessible to all types of gamers.
