[Mario Kart Wii] - Street Date? (or, how I Learned to stop worrying and love Civil disobedience)
Conan-san | 9:43 AM on 04.10.2008 21 comments

Well, I was waiting for the right thing to put up as a first post but this seems to be as right as any.

So, my local independent game emporium (who shall remain anonymous, lest they get hosed) told me that I could get the Mario Kart Wii now with no issue provided I waited for the delivery.

Now lets see, I had the games I was going to part exchange with me (I was going to save time and just present the swap voucher tomorrow) and I had a chance to more or less stick a middle finger up at Nintendo of Europe whilst lining their pockets (I'll leave it to you to figure out the logistics of that).

Can't say much fairer than that.

Now, that's not to say I didn't think highly of Final Fantasy X and X-2 (One does not Turn Based into greatness and X-2 ran out of good lines after the Snake joke), Mario Kart DS (and it's constant snaking as ) or the DS Web Browser (which just up and out sucked)
But after trade in, I could get MKW for £16, I was more or less stealing the thing from them anyway.

I'll get back to you with the particulars of the game but so far, here's a quick run down of my half hour play around with it:

* - It forces a Wii Update (to 3.2e) I suspect that it's to deal with the freeloader.
* - You can install a "Mario Kart Channel" that works independently of the game (though can boot it up to do various things) that can deal with the greater majority of the things you can do online.
* - The focus of the mechanics is drifting and jumping seems to be an effect of this rather than it's own mechanic.
* - Blue shells are still in force and your character even looks up and has that look of "Oh Shi-" just before you get hit.

@ Raz.
Well, it's more than I'm having with Brawl, which is zero.

Welcome. I can't wait 'till this comes state side. Tell me about the online anonymous matchmaking in the game.

Which, I add, is because I don't have it.

Wrong or right, you are one lucky son of a bitch, man! Enjoy! How about a non-spoiler review soon, son?

I hate you so much. I asked at every game store in town trying to get this a day early. I'm even considering hitting up the Asda down the road around midnight.

Friend code is necessary. We have to get Mario Kart into Friday Night Fights.

@Artemus: I've never really played the recent Mario karts but how many spoilers could there possibly be?

Friend Code - 1160 9838 6084

Matchmaking - This is sorta complex but here's my version of how it goes.
After selecting the game and chracter (and drift shift), you are put into a group of up to 12/8 players (Race/Battle).
As far as skill level, I believe it's based on your rank score, you start with 5000 and you can win or lose up to 100 per race depending on where you place with the top half being plus points and the lower being negative points. I'm not too sure with battle.

Connections seem to be fine but the one worldwide race I got into ended up with me D/Cing and losing 100 rank points as a result.
Also, if you pop into a group mid race, you can watch the race as it progresses, it's rather cool.

@Raz
Well, Sonic could be a secret chracter.

BTW: If it does turn out to be as much, I did not know that, I just said someting comepletely outlandish.

I'm really not that excited for some reason ... oh yeah cause GTA4 comes out around the same time and I'll be busy with that. Kudos on the street date break though.

@twister
To be honest, GTA doesn't do nothin' for me.

I too hate you. I was just in my local shopping centre and asked around a couple. One GAME store had the boxes out so I thought I was in luck. But the guy wouldn't sell it to me.

@Dan

To be fair, GAME have a bit more to lose by alowing SD to be broken than the indy stores.
GAME can't exactly cash in on SmaBro Brawl now, can they?

Woah, wait. Just read this "It forces a Wii Update (to 3.2e) I suspect that it's to deal with the freeloader. "

Can anybody confirm that if I buy this I can't play Brawl? Brawl or Mario Kart? DON'T MAKE ME CHOOSE! You have Brawl Conan?
Rayl's Destructoid Blog
Oh shi--- face? I approve greatly. Hopefully i can pick up my copy of Mario Kart wii in the morning and then i can fly through the garden of happiness.

...what the hell am i talking about?
Conan-san's Destructoid Blog
@Dan
I didn't buy an import copy of Brawl because I susspected that Nintedo would pull a dick move on me the moment I did.

I don't have Brawl so I can't confirm if the 3.2e update breaks Freeloader.

I hope it doesn't make me choose. Because quite frankly I don't know what I would do.

Unfortunately, you're gonna have to wait for tomorrow to see if anything comes of it.

I bet Datal are eating thier boxers at the prospect though.
