Nice comparisons!
... though I think that comparing it to the movie a little unfair in some ways. Dragon Age Origins is very much based on the Baldur's Gate series of games which were released several years before the LoTR movies.
... though both of course are based on the Lord of the Rings books. Dragon Age is based on the Baldur's Gate game series (a spiritual successor), which is based on the table top Dungeons and Dragons games which are somewhat loosely based on Tolkien's books.
The original Baldur's Gate had a tale similar to this one in that the main character was an orphan... he later finds out that the land's troubles are being caused by a long lost half brother, they are of course both born of a mighty Demon Lord and the half brother sought to cause a war in order to assert his power as a new King.
The current game Dragon Age: Origins has much in common with the Baldur's Gate series... even the Darkspawn are not unlike the demons of Bhaal (in later BG games you could transform into a slayer... because of your own demon heritage). The use of party members (each with their own quest lines), the classes, the NPC romances/romance options, the impact of your choices on the story line, even the dark fiery dungeons of the underworld... all were expanded on from the original Baldur's Gate series (though Neverwinter Nights and Icewind Dale and other games were also similar in various ways).
I guess in some ways the most recent incarnation of these game types (DA:O) is even more similar to LoTR but that may have been done purposefully to draw younger gamers who may not be as familiar with those older PC games.
Yeah, I guess there are similarities... but I honestly think it goes back to the roots of the game, and even the roots of D&D - which all seem to be greatly influenced by Tolkien.
Nice blog!
(and hey, at least they weren't seeking to destroy an item of power like the ring! LOL!)

@Elsa : I get your point... But I'm really focusing on the story of the game which Bioware is SO known for here... The difference in originality between DAO and Mass Effect shows are poorly the game's story is written.
Just though about that and it really made me laugh about the similarities...
I must also say I'm very excited to play Mass Effect 2 and suddenly Dragon Age becomes sooooooooo boring lol!
