My inspiration for this blog post came to me the other day while I was playing Brawl. I know, what c-blog DOESN'T have Brawl in it these days? Hear me out though, I promise this isn't going quite where you think it is.
To be more specific, I was playing Brawl and was about to use a Golden Hammer on the "Clear Boss Battles on Intense" challenge. I had just beaten Boss Battles on Very Hard using Mario and I decided that was hard enough, I didn't feel like dealing with Intense. Now much to my chagrin, I find out that the Hammer won't work on ANY of the Boss Battle challenges after I check out gamefaqs. Here is where my blog topic comes in at. (btw the blog title is to quote a phrase a good friend of mine uses)
So my question is, who's idea was it to decide that the Golden Hammers which were MEANT TO BE USED ON CHALLENGES THAT YOU DIDN'T WANT TO DO OR THOUGHT WERE TOO HARD COULDN'T BE USED ON CERTAIN CHALLENGES? Seriously am I the only one that sees the complete fail in this?
I understand that Sakurai probably wanted to use these challenges to get you to try out modes that otherwise you may not have tried. However, I feel it should be my choice whether I want to do these things or not. Why force me to play through each difficulty? Sure I could just say screw it and not do it at all, but I love collecting stuff in games and I know a lot of other people are the same way. Now I feel a bit sorry for people out there that may want to get all the unlockables, but may not have the skill to complete all these challenges. I finally beat Boss Battles on Intense with Lucas after many, many tries, and even more curse words (probably over 9000).
Beating frustrating challenges in games like this may make you feel good once you finally do complete them, but in the end I'd still rather not be forced into doing near impossible tasks to get unlockables. There are plenty of other games that have super tough challenges too, from Goldeneye and the Facility Invincibility cheat, to Final Fantasy III DS and the optional Iron Giant battle, to collecting every heart piece and item in all the Zelda games. There are plenty of 360 achievements I'm sure that are pretty ridiculous to obtain too.
Having said that, I feel these challenges should be kept to the hardcore that enjoy doing these things just for the sake of doing them and having bragging rights. Developers......in the future, please keep all of the collectibles away from these challenges, thank you.
Dang thats on of the last Challenges me and my bros have yet to beat......I was Considering using a Hammer on it.....but I cant ?
Yeah. I wasn't home and my girlfriend wound up using the hammers we had on the 'build 15 stages' and some other rather stupid one for a CD.
She didn't quite get you only have a limited amount.
But *shrugs* I wouldn't have done the 15 stages one I guess. But then I learned there's another one for 5 and it's like damnit. If I have to do five, might as well done 10 more.
But back to the point of the blog, there's a few challenges on that list where I'm like 'good god, fuck off.' I'm up for a challenge but piss sake -- isn't beating 100-man Brawl once enough? Why must I do it with every friggin character? Don't make me use Gannondorf.
There's some that make me say 'wow I wish I still have my hammers' but thankfully, it doesn't matter -- I wouldn't be able to use them anyway.
Yeah segasonicdude, no hammers on any of the Boss Battle challenges from what I understand.
And Tug Your God Out, too bad about your GF using the hammer, but it doesn't seem like it matters since you don't seem too excited to unlock everything.
Speaking of the 100 man brawl with every character one, thats the one I'm working on now, and it's probably the last hard one left. I've only got to beat it with 14 people now. Also, Gannondorf is actually one of the easier characters to beat it with. Your comment to is yet another reason I think Sakurai put in some of these challenges: he wanted people to play as characters they might not normally want to play as. Same goes with the Subspace Emissary.

Eh, I use to be into unlocking everything in games but if you've seen my pile of shit I still need to get to, I really stopped caring about 100%ing things. Heck, you probably have a pile just like mine. I think it was about four or five years ago when I stopped really getting excited for that. Though something about Rogue Galaxy made me do every damn little thing there was to do in it.
As long as I reach a statisfying conclusion to the story or at least to what I want out of the game. I'm happy.
And I wanted to unlock everything when I first got Brawl but now that I'm pretty sure I'm past the amount of trophies that was in Melee and the whole 'Get 500 trophies' challenge, I'm not sure I really want to go that far. I'll still be playing Brawl, much like Melee, seven years down the road so I'm in no hurry.
But yeah I figure that's the reasoning. And it's brillent on his part. But Gannondorf and Lucas...only two characters I protest against. Other than Target Attack and 100 Man I won't use Lucas until we get Mother 3.
@Tug Your God Out
Yeah you're right, I've got a decent backlog going of about 4 games going. I too will probably start caring less about getting 100% of everything in games. I can make an exception for Brawl though cause I like it so much.
There is something like 600 trophies and 700 stickers in this too. So far I've got 430 trophies and 610 stickers. So I'm getting there. Yeah I can understand how you feel about Lucas. It's strange to me that Nintendo didn't release Mother 3 in other territories. Who knows though, supposedly Nintendo finally started releasing Fire Emblem games in other areas because of Marth and Roy's popularity in Melee so theres still a chance Mother 3 could come out in other areas.
@Aziel13
Is that supposed to be an insult or something? Not sure what I did to offend, but whatever.
i still need to do that. on normal.
The two past Fire Emblem games are on my pile. The Wii one still in shrink wrap...ho hum.
Yeah I have like 290 trophies and 300 stickers. Not in any hurry, though with Opoona coming out this week -- I'm wondering if it has any chance to eject Brawl from my Wii.
Yes 2 Fire Emblem games are in my "to do" pile right now as well. Radiant Dawn and Sacred Stones for GBA. Plan on starting up RD once Brawl starts to loosen it's hold on me, whenever that will be. :)
