Clarke | 8:23 PM on 09.16.2009 7 comments

...you could play Quake Live. Free. Forever. Service subject to immediate termination at id software's discretion.

Come on prove me wrong that Quake Live isn't the better deal.

Price
UT3 - $20.00
QL - $FR.EE

Download
UT3 - 7.61GB
QL - 16MB

Fun
UT3 - Some
QL - Lots

You could play Unreal Tournament III this weekend or you could spend that time more wisely and play Quake Live. The choice is yours.

The problem is that while you can download it for free, you'll never be able to play it until you buy the game or another full weekend rolls around. =\

That has to feel weird, having a game on your hard drive that's not even yours. ...er, that's not yours and you can't play, that is. Yeah, point lost.

I dunno man, Im an Unreal Tournament fan I loved it since the first one. I also have a Quake live account but I dont log into it all that often, its good and all, classic arcade FPS, but UT is part of my roots man, not Quake. I love the weapons in the UT universe nothing beats the flack Cannon or the SHOCK COMBO. I mean I wrote a fucking article about that shit too. Sorry bro UT3 for me, but Quake live is still fun for sure.

I'm pretty sure QL is more than 16 MB. But it's a fair point in that it's nowhere near the 7+ GB required for UT3.

UT3 is widely available, in my area at least, for about 10 bucks. The graphics whore in me loves UT3 and the LAN party attendee in me also adores the wide selection of gameplay modes and instagib CTF always threatens to give me a heart attack.

I'll admit I was always into Q3 powered games like Wolfenstein or Jedi Knight more than Q3 itself, but Unreal always captured my attention and was a favorite in the LAN scene.

Even better deal? My local GameStops sell the Unreal Anthology for TWO DOLLARS. That's Unreal Gold, Unreal 2, Unreal Tournament, and UT2K4. For 2 bucks. Unbeatable deal.

It's really different strokes I'd say.

After UT99 the UT series sort of got lost the concept of DM & CTF, which is why UT2003 is considered a muddled mediocrity.

UT2004 came out strong with the major attraction being Onslaught and Assault then later Vehicle CTF. It tried to sell itself up as "Battlfield 1942 for the DM player at heart." and it succeeded in that and was fantastic. Unreal Tournament 3 dropped the ball as it originally promised huge battles with its new "Warfare" mode that would encompass Assault and Onslaught. Instead UT3's Warfare mode was a scaled back Onslaught mode with defense breaking Orb system.

The UTs haven't been good for DM or CTF since UT99. UT3's greatest failing is that it couldn't live up to the DM & CTF of UT99 nor the "Battlefield DM" of UT2004.

Still UT3 is real fun, just don't play it for DM or CTF and don't expect Warfare to knock your socks off like UT2004 did.
