Modern Warfare 2 "Updates" (No Dedicated Servers or Mods)
Clarke | 10:37 PM on 10.17.2009 22 comments

Since I haven't seen anyone post a blog about the recent update here are some new things about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 as reported by BASHandSlash.

> IW has control of the game
> IWnet servers will host multiplayer
> DLC will be a charged item for PC
> No dedicated servers
> Matchmaking system used to play with similarly ranked players
> VAC instead of PB
> Semi-capable password servers
> Semi-capable ad-hoc servers
> Competitive play is dead
> MW2 mods would not be possible
> Full integration into Steam

Now if you're a PC gamer you know how much of a terrible decision this is. As of Sunday, October 17, 2009 11:46 PM EST there are 1,501 signatures on the petition against these changes. . No doubt we'll see Jim posting about how PC gamers whine too much about our point and click games.

Also you can see there are many upset players on the Infinity Ward forums. I guess for now we can wait for FourTwoZero to post system specs...

No dedicated servers for the PC version?

Either you're trolling or the Online for the PC is dead already.
Corican's Destructoid Blog
This sucks.
My whole reason for buying it on PC is the mods and the online service.
And now that's all gone to hell.

I signed the petition.

It doesn't specifically say they have gotten rid of modding and what not. The guy posting the article just says he fears that there may be none, because they haven't stated anything on the subject. They just filled in the gap with their own assumptions. Also, the things you've listed are pretty much the norm for console versions.
Infneon's Destructoid Blog
If they do lock it down as much as the article fears, this could be the death knell for MW2 on the PC.
PhazonYoshi's Destructoid Blog
So they're charging over-the-odds for it, and removing features? Yes, don't buy this - if it becomes the norm that would be very bad.

@hood; But they -aren't- the norm for PC versions, and nor should they be. There's no reason not to have dedicated servers or modding on a system that can support them.
Dan CiTi's Destructoid Blog
So they want no one to buy this version? Got it.
Timmeh's Destructoid Blog
This is a load of BS if true. I usually buy my Call of Duty for PC but I gues I'll just rent this one for the 360.

Except the VAC thing, Punk Buster is a broken bag of shite. Then again, Steam isn't much better when it decides it's going to start kicking you.
Jon B's Destructoid Blog
VAC and steam integration, I can get behind.

No mods, dedi servers or even a server list? Fuck that. I'll enjoy this game for free courtesy of Mr. Internet until this changes or it's dirt cheap.
HiddenAHB's Destructoid Blog
That's why i'm getting it for the 360.
DonHonk's Destructoid Blog
I wasn't buying this game in the first place, but this seals the deal. I'll play the MP on my friends 360. But fuck this game and its awful singleplayer scripted bullshit jsaklfjasifja *rambles*
grafkhun's Destructoid Blog
Saw this on RPS earlier, a shame really. IW are being dicks on their forums I heard as well, they delete posts bad-mouthing this. I wasn't planning on getting MW2 anyways, but still, what a poor decision on IW's part.
DaddyG's Destructoid Blog
@Jon B

Dont use this as a bullshit excuse to pirate it. Man up and dont play it all together if you are that unhappy with the new system. Dont be such a pussy.
PhazonYoshi's Destructoid Blog
@HiddenAHB: So you can have... no dedicated servers or mod tools, and pay for DLC?

Don't buy it! If people buy it now, then it's likely to become standard (more money? Yes please!), and that would be very bad for us all.
angusm's Destructoid Blog
Sounds fine to me. I think Infinity Ward is more worried about the majority that just want to shoot shit than the minority that knows and cares about mods and wants expert levels of control over the manner in which they shoot shit.

Don't like it don't buy it.
Petitions to try and change a company's product seems really odd to me. It's like petitioning McDonald's because you don't think their fries are the right amount of yellow.
Corican's Destructoid Blog
The DLC issue I don't mind about really. If it's good, then I'm happy to pay for it. If it's obvious that they've put effort into making it enjoyable, then yeah, I don't mind rewarding them with my money.

But with the exception of the Steam stuff (which im cool with), the rest of these decisions are a pile of wank.
ChronosWing's Destructoid Blog
The amount of console elitism fail over at those IW forums is a fanboy friday all in itself.
Clarke's Destructoid Blog
@angusm

Actually it's more like McDonalds charging %50 more for %50 less french fries.

This is the PC community we're talking about. They're generally more knowledgeable about mods and servers.
Usedtabe's Destructoid Blog
I'm not a PC gamer, but right now I fucking hate consoles and MS for stupid matchmaking. It's ruined Gears of War, and now they are moving it to the PC? REally? Fuck matchmaking. Dumbest fucking idea in videogames.
JamnOnTheOne's Destructoid Blog
On the one hand, it cuts down on legitimate PC gaming and enjoyment of titles. I've slowly been jumping ship to consoles because I've gotten tired of the trends in the PC gaming scene like Steam and this helps put the final nail in the coffin for me until Diablo 3 gets released.

On the other hand, PC gaming did this to itself by being a pirate friendly platform.
Holyetheline's Destructoid Blog
Did someone mention 420 in here? No? Must have been a false alarm, good day then!
Velt's Destructoid Blog
what makes no sense:
> No dedicated servers
> Matchmaking system used to play with similarly ranked players

I hate matchmaking only. Is crap. We are not retarded, we can figure out how to use filters in all those lists of servers.

Really I wont be buying this game now, one less in the road to december but still, it hurts to know that it could have been better than the last one, if not because of stupidity.
Yehat's Destructoid Blog
The PC gaming community is typically one of the more shrewd and tribal gaming communities so it's kind of odd they're pulling a fast one.

Additionally as has be mentioned before but it bears repeating is why does this matchmaking need to take the place of dedicated servers? Why can't we have both, like you know the 'quick join' option?!
