So, the latest news coming out of my computer screen, into my ears, round and round my brain and through my fingertips is the news that Metacritic.com, the website that is the shizzle for review scores round-ups, has been inundated (INUNDATED! Not sure if I've ever written/typed that) with low 'User' scores for Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet.
Right
now the game has a Critics score of 95/100 and a 'User' score of 6.3/10. A statement on the website reads as follows:
"
Marc Doyle, Games Editor: My advice for our faithful users is to focus your attention on the Metascore for this game and not the thousands of user votes, most of which have been submitted before said users have played the game. This is a gaming community, and if people want to stuff the ballot box, there's not much I can do at this point. When we upgrade the registration requirements for participation on the site in the near future, this type of thing won't happen. We'll post the full legitimate user reviews upon the game's release. As always, thanks for using the site."
(Read: "Fanboys are useless in every way")
Angry Sackboy. Also, picture holds your interest in this story.
WTF!? Is it just me or does this just wreak of desperation? I mean, I don't know whether this sort of thing has happened alot, and I'm sure it goes on in small pockets here and there, but 2130 'User' scores have been submitted here. I mean, shit, a little bit of research reveals Gears Of War (1) has only had 98 User votes and Halo 3 only 1824.
So, my question is: How pathetic is the fanboy situation becoming when people are actively going out of their way to try and smear the name of an obviously brilliant game through the mud and shit?
I mean look at this...Resistance 2 has a user score of 3.8 from 116 users. HOW?! Dun dun dun...I hate a lot of Xbox Live users.
Why on earth does Metacritic allow these user scores way before the game's release? Surely they could stop it.
@Silverdragon, you are right... I'm not saying this will in any way at all effect the sales of LBP. This just makes it all the more pathetic.
Sure its cute and it does look like it would make a good platformer, but so far what eveyone seems to be excited about is the ability to make your own maps. And there are some great examples out there: I saw the calculator level and the one that played "To Zanarkand" from FFX, and I admit they were brilliant levels. But assume you were the person that made them. Now what, try to make a level that can do calculus problems? find some other to song to play throughout the level?
I'm sure people are going to be recreating some of their favorite games on LBP, so the question boils down to this: would you rather be playing Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, etc... or be recreating your favorite maps from said games on LBP?
I don't mean to start a flamewar, but I really just can't understand the obsession with LBP.
Could it be because the players are pissed at sony for delaying a game based on one dickhead?
1) Stop saying "maps".
2) Yeah, I've seen a great Sonic level remade. Made me want.
3) It is hard to make a platformer like this "look" good. It is when you get into creating and playing it that will be the main pull.
4) Shame you can't see the potential, it's something new and exciting to look forward to that doesn't involve massive guns and blokes with skinheads.
@Free Touch,
"My" $60 level editor? For your information, it's PS3's £45 level creator.
I ignore user reviews for the most part (except on Dtoid, of course) for this very reason. In a lot of cases, I tend to believe that if people aren't being paid to be objective, they won't be. Although that might represent a disturbing lack of faith in fellow gamers, the number of trolls I witness on the internets on a daily basis makes me feel justified in holding on to that opinion.
No, WiiMusic doesn't look like a good time, doesn't look cute(I actually don't know what it looks like), and isn't fun.
Cheers dude, I mentioned that (GoW2 4.4) earlier too. They are all as bad as eachother but this one stands out.
Totally agree how they should be ignored. That avatar is the bee's knees.
1) I meant maps from the other games which you turn into "levels" for LBP. Is there some other esoteric way of calling a level a level? Like calling core "Qore"
2) I'm sure the level looks great, but its original design was meant to played as a Sonic character, so I'd fail to see the appeal of playing it in LBP. It's like playing a remake of a Braid level. I don't think it would work without the magic of Braid.
3) Actually, I think it looks really beautiful. The graphics are impeccable.
4) I definetely see the potential in the concept, I just don't think its implemented well enough. I honestly can't say how it should be implemented, I'm not that creative, but I just feel something could have been done differently. And I know there's more out there than guns and skinheads. I am eagerly awaiting Persona 4, Rythym Heaven and Last Remnant (Although Persona 4 probably has guns too.. hmm..interesting conundrum...)
"just don't think its implemented well enough"
No disrespect, but you haven't played the game and, from what I hear and see, it looks as though creating all kinds of levels, both replicas of previous games and new ones with imagination, is made simple AND, importantly, fun.
How is it not implemented well enough? It can't really be compared to anything to have any scale and, for a first try, it is astounding. Plus, it has 50 original levels on the disc that make up a good game on their own.
For the record, I love skinheads with guns... Resistance 2 is probably top of my list right now. With LBP a close second.
@Zserv, I'm a caring guy.
You're right, its harder to talk about the implementation without playing it, but just by looking at it, and other people playing it, I still feel out of sorts with it.
I think I'm more against the the concept of "make your own game" (I think it was discussed on a recent Podtoid). I work around 60 hours per week, so when I get home I don't want to deal with the hassle of making my own game, and then playing it. Maybe I'm not the target demographic for the game, or I'm not creative enough. Or maybe I'm just lazy.
A good example of this is Seltermx's comments on this post. LBP is an amazing concept, I think. I want to get a PS3 just to play it. I think 360 owners are jealous because they want something different than shooters and sports games, but when a PS3 gets an innovative game, they get jealous and talk shit on it. I know I would love something like LBP on 360. Fanboys just suck balls, no matter what console. They have this weird idea that their console is the only good one, and people should only buy their console. Fuck that. Every fanboy can go suck a d for all I care.
@ seltzermx
It's definitely a game you would need to try yourself before you can get a good judgment on it. I had a great time with the beta and I didn't create any levels. It's just mindless fun and I was laughing the whole time playing online. It's the little things that I find great. Like I'll be picking a level and someone writes "poop" on the back of my head with stickers. Or slapping someone off a platform into fire will they're trying to make a jump. None of it's necessary but it adds enough personality to the game to make it lovable and addicting. And some of the user created levels are just phenomenal. So give it a try before you write it off.
to be fair, you don't HAVE to create a level. You can just play everybody elses. After about 6 months I reckon we will be talking about some of the best platforming levels around. Hopefully, anyway.
BMDUBYA, well said.
Reminds me of my flatmate (360 owner) who hadn't heard about LBP until about 2 weeks back but said this game alone, just by watching youtube, makes him want to buy a PS3. I think it was the Gears or Halo mock-up that did it, haha.
I think we have reached a point in time where 360 fanboys are not as comfortable as they were in their ivory towers 6 months ago. Things are changing and they are becoming more aware that the PS3 is a force. On the otehr hand, I hope PS3 fanboys don't start getting all up themselves too.
I am curious as to how my comments come off as fanboy-ish. I never once said that the PS3 "is teh suxorz" or any of that other crap. I don't criticize PS3 games either. When I purchased my 360 at the time it seemed like a good investment because a year ago it did have more variety and mroe of my friends had it. I'd be just as happy playing Resistance as I am playing Gears. I'm just waiting for God of War 3 or the next Persona installment to hit the PS3 to get one for my self. Its not that I can't afford one (as you pointed out that they defend their console of choice), its just that the Xbox currently satisfies my gamut of gaming interests. And how can you call Lost Odyssey, Last Remnant, Braid, Castle Crashers, etc.. shooters?
And if I came off fanboy-ish with my sarcastic comment of "Qore", I'm just as annoyed with the "NXE". Its just the fall update for all intents and purposes.
@Clance:
I guess you're right there. Maybe I'll pick it up in the future once I get the PS3 (When God of War 3 comes out) and by then just download the best levels already created.
I own a ps3, 360 and wii...and honestly...LBP doesn't impress me. I played the beta, gave it a bad review on metacritic. it's MY personal opinion, sorry, you can't change what i think.
or wait, maybe i am a xboxfanboyz111o?nee!1!e??leve??n1!1!?
lulz~
I'm not butthurt, but my finger is well and truly pointed at scummy fanboys of all kinds.
I respect your opinion and your own score, but when you look at the amount of people scoring the game it is clear that these aren't just beta testers.
They seperate themselves, so don't make them out to be victims and me the bad guy when I am just pointing out the fact that they are pathetic.
I mean, who has shares in Sony or Microsoft?
Well, Final Fantasy 7 got a 9.2 I guess that was before the whole fanboy shit. And MGS4 got a 9.0.
Little Big Planet is a great game. Anyone who thinks it's JUST a platformer couldn't be more wrong. Play the game, try to create a level play a couple good user created levels and you'll see what I'm talking about.
At first it's kinda cool to play a level out of your favorite oldschool game. But those are only well made. I like to see user created levels based on their own imagination. When you see some of those user created levels or levels based on a franchise (something completely different) you know there's going to be a shitload of great ones. The level based on God of War kicked ass. It was smart, good looking, fun to play and not a direct copy.
I really think you gotta play the game before you know what that game really does. It's not like something as COD4, where you will know beforehand that it is 'just' a FPS (a fucking great one but that's a different story). The problem with LBP is that if you want to put it in a corner you will fail. Because it's not just a platformer nor just a level creator.
Takeshi, great words.
Oh, and Dirt saves L'pool again!
Anyway, I'm all about positives. I've written some blogs with positives, you should chec 'em out.
I also don't care what people think about a game I love and am known to like games that often get bad reviews. Assassin's Creed is an example.
I eat turkey with gravy and cranberry at Christmas and that's sour with sweet. I love it all and I play games wayyy too much.
I like your rant. I think you're right.
Don't be naive, it is fanboys. How important or significant the fact is is debatable. We have "fanboy wars" because we have fanboys. Freedom of speech guy. I'm just letting people know what the situation is and what I think about it. If fanboys want to start a war they can do it elsewhere. I'd have written the same story if PS3 fanboys had done the same thing.
Messer is German for knife? Wow, that's like a descriptive term. Those things mess you up.
I love to read what people who're not working for the industry have to say about a particular game but this makes me forget about that. I'll just stick to well written blogs on this site.
And Dir(t)k saved L'pool indeed. Sweet!
