Yesterday I got my brand new computer and today I spending hours upon hours installing World of Warcraft and then uploading the patches which apparently wants to take 4 or 5 hours.
I'm guessing this is my punishment for not getting into this game before the 20th or so patch came out.
Anyway, since I'm getting into WoW, I'm looking for some beginner's advice. What area is good to start on, or server? What enemies should I kill first to build up my levels? What species should I be? Any better than others?
Throw all your wisdom at me WoW experts. Cause I have no clue what I'm about to get into.
Oh and one more thing ... the copy of the game I have is used copy from a friend. Am I screwed because he used the authorization code on it or is there a way to get around that?
:p
...
As far as I know, you need to get a new copy of the game, or at least a new authorization code. They tie to the account or something like that. EB Games won't (or at least isn't supposed to) take games like WoW on trade in because of that.
Seems weird to me though, as I think just one month of play costs almost as much as the game itself these days.
As far as getting started, I suggest a PvE server... you wont get killed by higher level players, which saves you a lot of grief.
Horde is easier and more fun to level, in my opinion.
Your options for servers are somewhat limited regardless of the random realm types. It comes down to PVP and PVE. Now PVP servers allow free pvp between the two factions at almost any time. At first it's going to be quite annoying. You will be killed over and over by people vastly higher level than you. Once you're nearing the level cap however, world PVP is a blast. On a PVE server you will have a lot easier time leveling up but feel like a large part of the game is completely missing. Personally, I would go a PVP server.
Your class and species, thats all up to you. There is something there for everyone.
Once you get into the game and all, just look for the giant yellow exclamation marks over random NPC heads. (!) They are quests and will ease you into the game pretty smoothly. Just read the quests, they will tell you exactly where to go and what to kill for now. When it's time to move to a new area, they will even give you a quest to get to that new area, as well as directions.
Also, because I must. If and when you do get close to endgame, choose not to raid. That gets too intense and time consuming. Stick with just getting together with some close friends and run a 5 man instance from time to time. Raiding gets a little too hardcore. I did it for a LONG time and ended up quitting because of it. I play now just with friends, nothing too serious.
One more parting note, it helps to have friends on the server you are playing on. If you don't know anyone that plays WoW at ALL then playing is going to be rather dull. I doubt you don't have any friends that play but in the unlikely scenario that you do not, toss me an e-mail (cjmartino@optonline.net.) I'll point you to my server and characters names and what not.
...yeah, I've been staying away from it. Playing it feels too much like having a second job, except I don't get paid.
But yeah, I'd suggest a medium-population, Normal server. I play horde usually, but it's a personally preference mostly I find. There are lots of advantages and disadvantages to every faction/race/class, but you'll have to get a feel for it yourself, play a bit of everything, then make a choice.
Enjoy responsibly (hehe) ... personally I only play maybe once a week (for quite a few hours mind you, but that's it) so it just goes to show not all of us become addicts :P
Also, just a note, when you get the game it gives you guest passes to give to friends and it actually says to borrow discs from a friend for the initial installation. So as long as your subscribing to your own account, I can't see it being a problem. I've used and reused my discs many times and it never requires a serial number or anything like that.
Okay, I've rambled enough ... have fun! (:
Best advice: Find a good semi-casual guild full of people who don't suck. You'll have way more fun with them than you will with the hardcore raiding guilds.
Ugh, WoW.
#2: Open world PvP brings out the absolute worst in people. Over time, you'll end up becoming one of them.
#3: Get used to long periods of time where one class will be massively overpowered, and the rest will suck. Also expect most people to be playing said overpowered class.
#4: Don't get into raiding at all if you value your free time. Besides, your precious armor that you spent months earning raid points to get is going to become obsolete when the next dungeon patch/expansion comes around.
#5: Don't.
I spent 2+ years with this game, and quit and returned for BC, and quit again afterwards. I went to Everquest 2, and so far, everyone's nice and polite and I'm never bored there.
But yeah, my advice is to either stay away from WoW, or not to gett too involved in it.
If i had to compare i would say Horde is the better side, the players on average have more experience and are more likely to work together. Plus the alliance doesn't have a rally cry like "For the Horde" which is surprisingly effective when you are in battlegrounds.
If you want a generaly overpowerd class to start off with go hunter. Dont try Mage or Priest as your first class because you will just find yourself dying a lot. I would also say got to level 20 and consider changing classes.
But the best advice i can give, don't go there unless you have a stable income and understanding friends. You get sucked in.
