Star Fox 64 SPOILERS and some Bioshock spoilers.
Ahh, where to begin? I have been gaming since Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong on the NES. I played Metroid and Mario 3 constantly. My mom and dad never had a SNES, and I didn't know that while I was playing Mario 3 that there was a Mario World out there that I never had explored. That changed when the N64 came out. That was my first console that I owned.
The best!
My parents got me one for Christmas and we raced each other to see who could beat Super Mario 64 first. My dad and mom beat me of course. I hated that. I must have been 7 or 8 when I had that N64, and I wanted to at least be better than my mom and dad at my game on my system. That changed when Star Fox 64 came out. We got it in a bargain bin at Comp USA, and I didn't expect it to be all that good.
Ten zillion times better than Gamestop.
"Who's Star Fox?" I remember asking myself that question. He wasn't Metroid, Mario, or Zelda. (we never knew that Link was the guy's name in Zelda and we also never knew that Samus was the name of the bounty hunter in Metroid) I had never heard of him. I thought the game would be crap. Well, anyway, we brought the game home and it was too complicated for my parents (if it's not Mario Party or Mario Bros. it's usually too complicated for them).
Best game ever made. Screw Bioshock and GTAIV.
I got the controls just fine. I beat the game with ease, and my parents couldn't get past the first level. It made me feel great. That's when I learned that there was a different way to beat the game. A harder way. It was on. I was going to beat the game the hardest way before my friends Robert and Parker. This was the first time I used a computer to help me look up how to beat something in a game. I think it was GameFaqs or something like that. I went the hard path, and got all the way to Venom against Star Wolf and I died. It sucked, because I had like 15 lives and Star Wolf went through about 10 of them. It was my first feeling of real accomplishment when I beat them, and murdered Andross' Brain.
Biggest shock I have ever had in a video game. I'm not lying. Bigger than Atlas being Fontaine.
I told all of my friends about that. None of them knew that Andross was really a brain in a robot. I had played plenty of games before Star Fox, but Star Fox is the first game I remember playing that was hard and that I felt like I had completely beaten all the way. I never got all the Stars in Super Mario 64 and I never got all the mini games in Mario Party 2, but I had beaten all the planets in Star Fox 64. It was the first game that got me hooked on gaming by myself without my mom and dad. I still feel good about beating Andross' brain, and to anyone who hasn't played Star Fox 64, you really need to play it on the Virtual Console, it's a great game.
