<p>Obviously, the NES, Genesis, and Super Nintendo are retro, but how far towards the present can one go before the "retro line" stops?

Like, the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation: are they retro? I would say yes, but then what about the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and Xbox? Initial reaction is no, but ... I don't know. They are "last-gen", so doesn't that make them retro?I am preparing a future feature and, surprisingly, this basic question is driving me crazy. I would love some help. What do you all think? Your wise opinions are greatly appreciated. :)<br /> </p>

I think a game console or games are considered retro when all support for them is dropped. Nintendo's not making any GameCube games or systems anymore, so I consider that retro, even though the Wii plays the games. The PS2, however, is still getting tons of games and support, so I don't think it's retro quite yet, despite the PS3.

Just my personal opinion.

N64 is not retro. N64 and PS1 are post-retro... Everything before them is retro... The Dreamcast is pre-last gen and PS2/XBOX are last-gen. Xbox360, Wii, and PS3 are present-gen... and only God knows what next-gen is.

My gut reaction would be to only include everything prior to the "great" 3D revolution, meaning no Playstation, N64 or Saturn. However now that we've moved into a new batch of consoles it might be time to elevate that generation of systems to the status of retro.

I'd definitely say no to the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube falling in that camp yet. They're just still too recent.

Maybe somewhere between the 16-bit and the 32-bit consoles. So, I guess 24 bits is the cutoff. Hmm.

Backup answer: retro means games that you could play when you were 11 or under.

I laugh when I think about how I thought how great ye olde retro Xbox graphics were, what with Fable, Ninja Gaiden, etc.

I will expect to laugh soon at how I thought and still do think that Gears of Wars graphics are amazing.

This is a really tough question. My gut reaction is to exclude anything that supported 3D graphics. But maybe that's arbitrary? Perhaps "retro" should be a relative term, and include anything two or more generations ago. In which case, retro would be PS1/Saturn/N64 and everything previous.

I was actually going to ask this question for this week's RetroForceGO! You stole my question. I would say that absolutely, everything up to the 16-bit generation is retro. But then, you already said that. I am iffy on the PSX/N64, because it does have an old (read: dated) nostalgic look to it, but that was the generation that really led us to where we are today, with the beginnings of 3D graphics. Please don't bring up that we had 3D on the SNES. A few dozen polygons on the screen at once doesn't count.

Maybe it's just that Nintendo in general is easier to think of in a nostalgic way.

I think retro is everything pre-3d. N64 isn't retro -- it's just old. My grandmother is old, but she's not retro.

@Butmac: that would make the Game Boy Advance and (by some definitions) the DS retro, which is pretty clearly not retro.

Anything lacking a dimension that the current gen has is retro... If we find a fourth dimension (3D projectors?), and they make a game system to play games in it, then all that we're playing now will be considered retro.

The only gray area to me is 2.5d stuff. Is Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles a retro game? It feels like one, but it's new. To a further extent, is New Super Mario Bros. retro?

I think much like classic rock and oldies music retro defines a certain style and time of gaming (NES, SNES, Genesis, etc.). Much like oldies will alwasy be songs from the 50's and 60's and classic rock will always be rock from the 70s or so retro will always be games from the that first era of gaming. Thus the PS1 and N64 (around teh time people started talking about retro gaming) will never be retro but will be something else. Maybe modern or something liek that. To look at it via another anology modern design and architeture is a certain look that won't change even though the word modern means up to date...thus post-modern.

I don't think pre-3d works, cuz look at games like Doom 3D or Wolfenstein 3d on the SNES that were some of the first attempts at 3d cartridge games. I would still consider those retro.

I consider it up to the N64-PSX. The PS2 is still alive an doing well, so even if it isn't technologically "next-gen" or "current gen", it still has a big enough presence to be the current console for a lot of people, and if the PS2 is still not retro, then neither are the Xbox or Gamecube.

I like how Cowzilla explained it, but i think you (chad) are referring to a certain old, nostalgic, "classic" meaning we usually give the word "retro" when we talk about videogames. I think this proves what Cowzilla said about not having enough terms, or very specific ones, when talking about games.

Yeah my views happen to line up with cowzilla very closely as well. I think retro and still won't think of anything newer than the SNES. The Dreamcast/N64/PS were good systems, are definitely classic gaming, but they aren't "retro". Retro screams arcades and Pong, cartridges and pixelation. 3D vector animation is out of place in the retro world.

But then you need to consider handhelds, right? To solve that dilemma in the same way would force you to consider the GBA for the title "retro" even though it is newer than the 64. Hell, Contra 4 is coming out soon for the DS, I think I'll look at that game as retro.

What do people think about handhelds? Or is this thread dead, never to return again?
