The 1st Annual Amazees! (Videogames)
Chad Concelmo 44 comments

Welcome to part two of the Amazees!

Yesterday I gave away the awards for my favorite movies of the year, and now it is time to tackle the category most of you know a lot better: videogames!

There is no time for pointless jibber jabber. Let’s get to the awards, shall we?

*applause*

*taking off my shirt*

*audience members throwing rotten fruit and asking me to “put my Goddamn shirt back on!”*

And the winners are ...

________________________________

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

True, Metal Gear Solid 4 was full of a ridiculous amount of cutscenes, but the featured action set pieces (although minimal) were unbelievably epic. Think about the motorcycle chase, the boss fights, the final battle! Every action sequence in the game is beyond phenomenal.

Honorable Mention: Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (PSN)

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS)

Part adventure game, part puzzle game, all amazing.

Honorable Mention: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (Nintendo DS)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

Even ignoring the Nintendo fanboy aesthetics, Smash Bros. is easily one of the most addictive and deepest (yes, deepest) fighting videogames ever created. I still love playing it even this many months later. Dibs on Ike!

Honorable Mention: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (XBLA)

Rock Band 2 (Xbox 360)

Not much changed from the first Rock Band, but the small stuff that did made this a vastly improved sequel. Although I never know many songs in the Rock Band collection (a Disney version please!), I still have a blast playing guitar, drums, or “rocking out” on the mic. “Rocking out:” Is that what all the kids are saying nowadays?

Honorable Mention: Lips (Xbox 360)

LittleBigPlanet (PlayStation 3)

After playing and falling in love with LittleBigPlanet I immediately ranked it as one of my top ten favorite platformers of all time. After playing through it again (and checking out some of the brilliant user-created levels) I ranked it in my top four. LittleBigPlanet is phenomenally designed and the most fun game of the year.

Honorable Mention: Mega Man 9 (WiiWare), N+ (XBLA)

World of Goo (WiiWare)

The genre “puzzle game” is starting to blur its lines a little bit. Back in the day it was easy to decide what kind of videogame a puzzle game was: if it looked like Tetris it was a puzzle game! Now, things are different, with classics like Portal slipping into this getting-broader-by-the-second genre. World of Goo, the latest non-traditional puzzler, is an absolute masterpiece, combining some of the most original visuals with some of the most challenging, yet satisfying gameplay I have experienced in years.

Honorable Mention: Boom Blox (Wii)

Advance Wars: Days of Ruin (Nintendo DS)

Although the series got “darker” with this installment, the classic, strategy gameplay remained intact, even getting a little better with the inclusion of new vehicles and tighter map design. I love this series like crazy.

Honorable Mention: Lock’s Quest (Nintendo DS)

Burnout Paradise (Xbox 360)

When I heard that the Burnout series was changing to open-world gameplay I got a little nervous. The best part about Burnout is its arcade feel -- adding any sort of realism could only hurt the series. Luckily, I was wrong, as Burnout Paradise is easily the best in the series.

Honorable Mention: Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

I know I have mentioned it a million times in the past, but I adore Lost Odyssey. It is the first RPG I have played in this new generation that plays like an old school SNES role-playing game with a beautiful, high-def polish. Words cannot express how refreshing and classic Lost Odyssey feels to me.

Honorable Mention: Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)

Resistance 2 (PlayStation 2)

Resistance 2 is, hands down, the most underrated game of the year. How could a game with extraordinary multiplayer, a strong single-player campaign, and some of the most amazing boss battles ever put in a videogame become so quickly forgotten?

Honorable Mention: Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

Man, how do you even rank the beautiful games that came out this year? Even though many of them had different styles, the ultra realistic and stunning visuals in Metal Gear Solid 4 stood out the most.

Honorable Mention: Mega Man 9 (WiiWare)

Mega Man 9 (WiiWare)

Mega Man 9 could have had the most discordant soundtrack of all time and it still would probably win just because of my love affair with all things 8-bit MIDI related. Lucky for me (and my ears), the music in Mega Man 9 is classic, featuring some of the best level tunes in the entire series. Tornado Man stage FTW!

Honorable Mentions: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii), de Blob (Wii), Bionic Commando: Rearmed (XBLA)

Dead Space (Xbox 360)

Even though I loved all aspects of Dead Space, I remember being particularly impressed by the creepy and extremely effective sound effects in the game. The sound in Dead Space is some of the best I have ever heard in a videogame.

Honorable Mention: Galaga Legions (WiiWare)

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

This category was a tough call. While Metal Gear Solid 4’s stellar voice acting could have easily taken this award, the very fact that Jansen exists gives the edge to Lost Odyssey. Best character EVER!

Honorable Mention: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

Um, the end of Disc One. That is all.

Honorable Mention: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

Braid (XBLA)

I am still trying to wrap my head around what happens at the end of XBLA masterpiece Braid. Whatever the real meaning is, Braid’s ending is one of the most thought-provoking and moving videogame endings of all time.

Honorable Mentions: Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360), Castle Crashers (XBLA)

Jansen (Lost Odyssey)

Jansen is ridiculous. Right when you think he is gay, he has sex with multiple women. Right when you think is he becoming mildly annoying, he says something hilarious. I love Jansen and will always remember him as one of my favorite RPG characters ever.

Honorable Mention: Sackboy (LittleBigPlanet)

Castle Crashers (XBLA)

Remember how much fun it was to play videogames with friends in the same room or standing next to each other in an arcade? Well, Castle Crashers was the first game to give me that nostalgic feeling in a long, long time. Also, giving your companions timed button press CPR is my favorite new way to revive a downed teammate. Awesome.

Honorable Mention: Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360)

World of Goo (WiiWare)

World of Goo took me my surprise. Before I played it I was worried the Wii controls, combined with the unique gameplay, would render the downloadable game too cumbersome and challenging for my tastes. I was really wrong. World of Goo is an absolute masterpiece and one of the best puzzle games I have ever played in my entire life.

Honorable Mention: Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii)

Lost Odyssey (Xbox 360)

I have talked about this epic, incredibly amazing RPG enough in these awards. Just go play it. Like, right now.

Honorable Mention: Braid (XBLA)

LittleBigPlanet (PlayStation 3)

Ladies in gentlemen, I give you the closet race of the Amazees! As much as I adore (and worship, even) Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet takes the cake due to its flawless design and revolutionary level creator. But, man, this one was close.

Honorable Mention: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

Professor Layton and the Curious Village (Nintendo DS)

The Destructoid editors’ trip to Cancun last year was one of the most fun and enjoyable times in my entire life. I brought Professor Layton with me and it almost distracted me a couple nights from the epic, topless festivities. That’s how good of a game it is.

Honorable Mention: Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (Nintendo DS)

World of Goo (WiiWare)

At $15, World of Goo is the best value of the year. Buy this game for WiiWare as soon as you can. If you already have, play it again! Great games like this don’t come along very often.

Honorable Mentions: Braid (XBLA), Mega Man 9 (WiiWare), Castle Crashers (XBLA)

LittleBigPlanet (PlayStation 3)

After much thought and many internal debates, I finally decided that my favorite videogame of 2008 is LittleBigPlanet. While Metal Gear Solid 4 surpassed my wildest dreams of how cinematic a videogame can be, World of Goo impressed me with its uniqueness, and Lost Odyssey made me bawl like a little girl on several occasions, LittleBigPlanet, literally, revolutionized this industry I hold so dear to my heart.

Even without the level creator, LittleBigPlanet would be one of the best designed platform games of all time. But, wait, that’s not even a fair statement: the level creator is what LittleBigPlanet is all about! Once you dive into this user-created feature, man, the game becomes one of the most incredible videogame experiences of all time. All of the dreams we as gamers had growing up about designing our own game could finally come true care of the very capable, intuitive hands of LittleBigPlanet.

What a year for the (supposedly) struggling PlayStation 3! LittleBigPlanet is an absolute masterpiece and the best videogame of 2008.

Honorable Mention: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PlayStation 3)

The 1st Annual Amazees! (Movies)
Chad Concelmo 54 comments

Welcome, everyone, to the first annual Amazees!

What are the Amazees!, you ask? Well, I love awards shows, making lists, and talking about things I love, so I decided to combine them all and celebrate the stuff that made me happy this past year. Oh, I also like using the word “amazing.” And, thus, the Amazees! were born!

Check out this sophisticated artist rendering of what an Amazee! looks like:

Fancy, huh? You know you want one.

Some people may not know this, but I love movies almost as much as I enjoy playing videogames. Of course my tawdry love affair with videogames will never quite be matched, but, I have to say, there is something about seeing a great movie that really tickles my fancy.

Because of this obsession with movies and videogames I decided to present the Amazees! in two parts: today will focus on my favorite movies of 2008 and tomorrow will be dedicated to my favorite videogames of the year.

Keep in mind that these awards only involve movies and videogames that I have seen or played. If something incredible is missing it is probably because I just haven’t experienced it yet. Don’t yell at me!

So, without further adieu, I present to you the first annual Amazees!:

*applause*

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Wait, the tears streaming out of my face at the end of this movie have something to say:

“The music ... so good ... so moving ...”

There you go. Tears don’t lie.

Runner-up: WALL-E

Cloverfield

Although the entire movie is technically impressive, the sound effects in particular in Cloverfield are exceptional.

Runner-up: The Dark Knight

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Honestly, I just decided to add this category at the last minute just so I could talk about how freakin’ amazing the makeup in Benjamin Button is. Wow.

Runner-up: The Wrestler

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

The cinematography in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is absolutely gorgeous. And, yes, be prepared to read the name “Benjamin Button” a lot throughout the rest of these awards.

Runner-up: Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire

It is very rare for me to notice how well a film is edited, but after seeing Slumdog Millionaire I remember mentioning to a friend how amazing the editing was. The remarkable style and frenetic pace of the movie are born almost entirely from the incredible editing.

Runner-up: American Teen

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Um, they digitally inserted Brad Pitt’s face on another actor for almost half the movie. And it looks amazing. Yeah, this award could not have gone to any other film.

Runner-up: Cloverfield

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

How many times have you ever said a movie is better than its source material? For me, only a small handful. And one of those movies is The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Runner-up: Frost/Nixon

WALL-E

WALL-E is the definition of a perfectly structured movie. From the opening, wordless portion on Earth to the surprisingly deep commentary on the human race’s obsession with consumerism that closes the movie, WALL-E impresses and never ceases to blow me away with its endless creativity.

Runner-up: Slumdog Millionaire

Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

As Queenie, the incredibly kind adoptive mother of Brad Pitt’s Benjamin, Taraji P. Henson is marvelous. No other actress this year (supporting or lead) embodied a role better. Every scene she was in filled my heart with such joy -- if I wasn’t laughing out loud I had a giant smile on my face.

Runner-up: Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married)

Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight)

I know, giving Heath Ledger this award is so obvious. But, man, all these months later I am still thinking about his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight. My favorite scene has to be the part when Ledger’s character walks out of the hospital dressed as the nurse. That little hop he does off the curb sealed the deal for me.

Runner-up: Ayush Mahesh Khedekar (Slumdog Millionaire)

Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married)

The rehearsal dinner scene alone in Rachel Getting Married wins this category for Anne Hathaway. No other movie this year made me feel more uncomfortable than Rachel Getting Married, and it’s all thanks to Anne Hathaway’s tragic performance. And I mean that as the highest compliment.

Runner-up: Cate Blanchett (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler)

Gosh, this was a tough category. Between Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino) and Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) I truly didn’t know who to pick!

In the end, though, Mickey Rourke gave the most affecting, physically demanding performance I have seen all year. Um, he took a staple gun to the chest. MULTIPLE TIMES!

Honorable Mention: Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon)

Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire)

While David Fincher’s direction in Benjamin Button is flawless, I have to give the slight upper hand to Danny Boyle for his remarkable work on Slumdog Millionaire. Not only is Slumdog one of the best films of the year, it is also one of the most stylish and well constructed movies of all time. The direction truly is perfection.

Runner-up: David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button)

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

When I first saw Benjamin Button more than a month ago I was obsessed with it. Instead of proclaiming it the best movie of 2008, though, I decided to let the experience sink in a little and see it again when it opened on Christmas Day. I did. And it is still my favorite movie of the year.

As much as I adore Slumdog Millionaire and WALL-E, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button affected me on a level no movie has in years. The first time I saw it I continued to cry for at least ten minutes straight after the closing credits rolled. That’s one powerful piece of art! David Fincher’s masterpiece is like a modern day fairy tale, displaying some of the most technical wonder -- from the jaw-dropping visual effects to the stunning camera work -- I have ever seen on the big screen.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is a movie I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.

Honorable Mentions: Slumdog Millionaire, WALL-E

Some random thoughts ...
Chad Concelmo 45 comments

So, I have been super busy and (sadly) away from my normal Destructoid duties the last few days, but I have some things on my mind that I wanted to get off my chest/ask you all about.

Humor me and read on, will you? :)

1. World of Goo for WiiWare is one of the greatest games I have played in a long time. Do yourself a favor and download this game ASAP! If you don’t have enough space on your Wii hard drive, figure out a way to make some. If you are like me, it may be hard, but I think it’s time to say farewell to your beloved Pokemon Snap.

2. I cannot wait for the final retail copy of LittleBigPlanet. I have been excited about this game for a while, but after fooling around in the beta these last couple weeks I am completely hooked. From the almost deafening buzz and glowing recent reviews, the final game can’t come soon enough. If everything comes together like I think it will, this may just be my Game of the Year (if not my Game of the Century).

3. Question: Should I buy Dead Space? My backlog is getting ridiculously long already and there are still so many more games to come in these next few months. I had no interest in Dead Space, but the reviews have been fantastic and now I am giving it a second thought. Is it worth the money? I am this close to purchasing it, but wanted to get some advice from the people I trust the most (you all!).

4. Has Heroes lost it? I used to look forward to watching this show every single week, but last night’s episode just made me sad. Is it time to jump ship or should I stick around a little longer? No Heroes = one more hour of videogame time a week! I don’t know what to do!

Anyway, thanks for listening. As a token of appreciation, here is a picture of me with my shirt off:

Why dolphins are amazing - Reason #1591
Chad Concelmo 24 comments

Warning: the below video is unbelievably inspirational, but ultimately very sad.

For the first time ever, a group of Korean scientists caught on tape a pod of dolphins trying to save the life of one of their own. The video shows the pod pushing the very sick dolphin to the surface, constantly trying to flip it over to prevent it from sinking.

The footage is remarkable and proves yet again why dolphins are some of the most intelligent and gentle creatures on Earth. Even more inspiring is the fact that the dolphins continued this first aid for more than an hour. They refused to give up until their friend was better.

Unfortunately, this particular tale ends on a sad note, but it only goes to show how amazing dolphins are.

If anyone has a 40 nearby, join me in pouring one out for my fallen comrade.

"I see you got the memo!"
Chad Concelmo 74 comments

If any of you have 9 to 5 office jobs you will probably relate (almost too well) to what I am about to tell you.

There are some ... er ... "jokes" that like to circulate the cubicle-filled hallways of office buildings every once and a while. (You will understand why I put "jokes" in quotation marks in one sec.) These "jokes", I guess, are supposed to be hilarious, help you forget about your daily duties, and make you chuckle with a whimsical glee as you clench your coffee mug and try to forget about the fight you just had with your wife last night over Dancing With the Stars.

I am here to say these "jokes" need to stop. They are not funny. At all.

The culprit today (one that I have heard many times over the years) was this:

I walk in and sit down in my office. A coworker walks by and peeks in at what I am doing. I happen to have the same colored shirt on as this coworker. Coworker says: “Oh, hey, I see you got the memo!” Coworker then laughs uncontrollably and walks away (assumedly to use the same line on someone else unlucky enough to have worn a yellow shirt).

Now, what part of that "joke" is funny? Is there an actual memo that goes out to people telling them what to wear to work that I mistakenly didn’t receive? If not, is it supposed to be funny to even think about a wacky memo like that existing? Wow, that is hilarious.

I know, I sound like a jerk saying this, but someone has to stand up for what is funny in this world. At least if said coworker told me a Knock Knock joke or recited a funny limerick I would have been impressed by the originality.

I love everyone I work with, but, man, these "jokes" are getting old.

How about you? Are you the daily victim of office "jokes"? If so, what are they? I have a morbid curiosity about these things.

Why the Destructoid community is the greatest community of all time
Chad Concelmo 85 comments

I want to put babies in the entire Destructoid community.

I apologize if I have trouble communicating what I am about to tell you. I am a little extra emotional right now. And by “a little extra emotional” I mean I just started crying. It was horribly embarrassing, but I don’t care. I am so happy.

Anyway ... so ... a few minutes ago I just received this in my Inbox:

______________________________

Our dearest Chad,
We would all like to wish you a Happy Birthday and give you some birthday love so the Destructoid community, who love you dearly, would like to bestow this gift upon you for your birthday.

Make Some Wet New Friends with the SeaWorld Dolphin Interaction Program

You've always wanted to do it and now's your chance—jump in the water with SeaWorld's friendliest dolphins and interact nose-to-nose with these amazing creatures. Once you put on your wetsuit and booties you'll be ready to splash around with your new friends as you practice with them, feed them lunch and just touch their smooth glistening skin. Don't miss this wonderful, wet opportunity to fulfill a special dream for you and your family.

At first I wasn’t sure exactly what I was reading. Is this a present? A cute picture of a dolphin? But then it hit me (with a little help from fooLiz): O. M. G. The freakin’ Destructoid community all chipped in to buy me a private swim with the dolphins at SeaWorld in San Diego.

Yeah. It’s true. It’s the greatest gift I have ever received.

I can’t thank you all enough for this. You have no idea how much this means to me. I am not sure who exactly chipped in, so I will just list all the people copied on the e-mail.

Thank you to:

I am so excited about swimming with dolphins. It is a lifelong dream come true.

And, of course, there will be pictures. Lots and lots of pictures.

My new favorite Disney song
Chad Concelmo 52 comments

I know we are all in agreement that the greatest Disney song of all time is “One Jump Ahead” from Aladdin. Even if it is not your favorite favorite (blasphemy!), you have to admit it is pretty awesome.

Well, care of my new BFF keener, this version of "One Jump Ahead" is … er … never mind the small talk ... just watch this and bask in all its glory:

I could get punched in the face right now and this would still be the best night ever.

Now, to listen it to it one more time …

Gay punctuation is gay
Chad Concelmo 69 comments

Jonathan Ross is hilarious.

Actually, I am getting ahead of myself. Let me start with a disclaimer: This blog post may not be funny to anyone. Last night Jonathan and I were talking on gchat and I was laughing so hard I had to write about it this morning. But I do understand that a lot of times inside jokes are not funny to anyone else. Just take this as a warning.

What were we talking about? Well, we were having a discussion on what the gayest punctuation mark is.

It was a tough race, clearly, but we narrowed it down to two: the tilde and the crazy curved brackets.

Let’s break this down:

Now, the tilde is almost too obvious, given its ridiculously gay name. But looking past that, observe the feminine curve, the way it floats above the baseline. The tilde is pretty darn gay.

But before giving the tilde the crown (or tiara?), you have to consider the curved brackets. I mean, look how sassy they are! As an example, read this sentence: "I can’t believe you decided on those black shoes {girrrrrrl!}!" The curved brackets just fit so comfortably in that extremely gay exclamation.

See? It’s a pretty tough call.

For the curious, Jonathan and I were much more confident on the sexuality of other punctuation.

As for the straightest, the underscore easily takes the car-fixing, boob-grabbing cake:

Flat; grounded; to the point.

The most metrosexual? Why the ampersand, of course (for obvious reasons):

Just look at it ... so confident, yet so confused ...

As for the gayest, please help us make a decision. What do you think is the gayest punctuation mark? The tilde, the curved brackets, or something not mentioned (I am looking at you pilcrow)?

And, yes, Jonathan and I need to do something better with our time ...

Last minute Destructoid Sea World trip!
Chad Concelmo 34 comments

FooLiz and suff0cat are staying with me this weekend (yay!) and we have randomly decided to go to Sea World in San Diego tomorrow (Saturday, 9/6). If you live in the Los Angeles or San Diego areas we would love for you to go with us!

Just e-mail me at chad@destructoid.com and I will fill you in on all the details. It is not 100% official yet, but it will most likely happen. If you are interested I will give you the final word later tonight.

Obviously, I am ridiculously excited about this little excursion. You think I am a happy guy normally? Just wait until I get around real, trick-performing dolphins. I apologize in advance for how annoying I am going to be.

Tomorrow is going to be amazing!

God, I am excited already. :)
