I started playing Tokyo Jungle again. It's slowly becoming one of my favorite games ever. I finally finished the story mode, which took a particularly interesting turn at the end, and added a lot of depth and context to the world of the game. I've also gotten used to the arcade-style gameplay of survival mode, to the point where I find myself craving a survival session while I'm at work. I managed to survive 100 years for the first time the other night while playing as a zebra, and now I really want to get high scores with all of my other favorite animals.
I've managed to unlock a majority of the playable animals by now. I still need to earn enough points to unlock the polar bear, black panther and mammoth (also the robo-dogs, but that will take a while), and I still need to find the lion, tiger, deinonychus and dilophosaurus.
The ostrich is definitely my favorite animal to play as (followed by the giant moa, but they're very similar). They're quick, they're herbivores, and they can kick the shit out of almost anything that tries to eat them. I was able to take down several tigers, a crocodile, a pack of wolves and more before a lion finally managed to land a fatal blow. Also, I just think ostriches are pretty darn cool. I wanted to strive to become the top ostrich in the leaderboards, but somehow the leaderboards are topped by people who have lived 998 years... how is that even possible? I guess I'll just try to get as high a score as I can.
I feel like I have a blog post about Tokyo Jungle somewhere in my brain, waiting to come out, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. There's something about this game that's intrinsically special to me.
