Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays! I've been really sick all week, but I'm finally starting to feel better today, so that's good news!
I've been slowly making my way through all the games I got over the past week or so. This week I played some Shenmue. I walked all over town asking everyone I met about Chinese people and sailors. Surely I made many people uncomfortable. When not trying to find out where all the husky sailors spend their time, I've been buying toy capsules, picking things up very delicately, petting a kitten (who seems to always be sleeping), and standing around the Tomato convenience store listening to the jingle. It's a neat game, if a little underwhelming by today's standards, but I'm glad I finally get to experience it!
I also played a bit of Papers, Please, which is an interesting game. I was really enjoying it until I tried to go to sleep that night, and in my sickly state, I started having fever dreams where I thought my in-game decisions were actually affecting real people. I would get all worried thinking I wouldn't be able to pay for medicine or food to help my sick son, and I'd have to start detaining more innocent people, and then wake up confused and realize I don't even have a son. Then I'd try to go back to sleep and remember that, during the day's work, I'd separated a woman from her husband and probably doomed her, and then wake up and realize it was just a freaking game!
It is a very engaging game, which toys with your emotions and makes you feel like a huge jerk, and you don't really have much of a choice because you have your family to think about. I probably shouldn't play it while I'm sick though, because apparently it really messes with my head!
