Cblog Recaps of 09/18 and Strider in Los Santosisms

So everyone knows GTAV launched and everyone is busy playing it. You probably know everything I wanna say about it because I'm generally enjoying it. What else is there for me to say?

Well, I do have the unique position of actually living near Los Angeles. Nearly every open world game takes place in a different city. New York is especially popular as a concrete jungle but NYC's popularity extends far beyond video games. Comics routinely take place in NYC as well and nearly everything that wants some sort of urban take is in NYC. Can you believe Watch Dogs takes place in a distant future Detroit? I mean, Detroit?

Almost every GTA takes place in some city I'll never visit but San Andreas has that special place in my heart because I am a proud Californian. A state with constant good weather, particularly Southern California. We regularly joke that being a weatherman here is either boring or lazy. It's sunny and good or sunny and hot. That's it really. But the original San Andreas is kind of hard to pin down with it's blocky polygons. Now, GTAV is around and it's stunning the locations it recreates that I've actually been too.

Vespuchi Beach for example is a dead ringer on Venice Beach. I've biked on paths and recognize curves as they are in Los Santos. There's also the Santa Monica boardwalk, complete with cheesy carnival and the end pier. What's not in the game is the nifty little end of route 66 souvenir shop located at the end. But there's Muscle Beach though, with humongous men pumping iron. Hell, I recognize stairways near the boardwalk that I've walked down from the streets to the sand. I should check underneath the boardwalk for the tiny aquarium.

I've also driven around Los Santos and recognize that damn flowers chain that seems to be everywhere in SoCal. I think it's Conroy's Flowers and it's easily recognized with brick paved front and semi-circular entrance. I really should put another bit of effort and see if Rockstar bothered to put Little Tokyo in.

I think a little field trip is in order now. Just how much of LA has been recreated to become LS?

Well, I really should just be getting back to Los Santos. I need to make some paper.
