Man, it is a shit storm over at the Bioware Social forums for multiplayer. Reckoning dropped and everyone, especially the ones who watched the livestream, are atwitter at all their shiny new toys. Cries for buffs and nerfs are being heard everywhere and historically speaking, it's not surprising. As soon as everyone gets their hands on a new thing, they are at their most judgmental. It's mind boggling some of the complaints being lodged against some of the kits, like the Krogan Warlord.
Six new character kits were released along with a fisherman's catch of new weapons and gear. I was lucky enough to get a few already, though the results of a few of them leave something to be desired. Especially because a lot of what I'm experiencing feels a little buggy and unfinished.
The first character I unlocked was the Talon Mercenary Engineer. His whole schtick is having an omni-bow, continuing 2013's year of the bow. On paper, it sounds cool, replacing your melee with what is essentially a secondary weapon. In practice however, the omni-bow at best is unsatisfying and at worst, is flat out unreliable.
How do I omni-bow? I mean really.
I can understand the omni-bow's underwhelmingly weak power though. It's essentially a built in second weapon with unlimited ammo. Sure, you might need several shots to kill, but you can spam the thing again and again without needing to worry about ammunition. You can buff his arrows with powers limited by his grenade count too. A lot of people are complaining that his bow is too weak and while I know that feeling, I think they're overlooking the fact that nothing's stopping them from firing the thing over and over without restraint. The only problem is that the disparity between the bow's utility and the risk-reward factor. Charging the bow to fire takes time and you're playing an Engineer class; a class noted for low health and shields. It's a jarring disconnect between the Talon's frailty and the focus on using a wrist mounted crossbow that needs time to pull back. That's before mentioning dangerous bugs such as a strange misfire glitch that causes you to hold the bow back for an additional few seconds, leaving you vulnerable in enemy fire as your omni-bow still hasn't fired. Charging a full shot already takes one valuable second. Anymore than that from a glitch is just plain fatal.
I wouldn't mind the bow's power being buffed a bit but as it stands now, it's not an unreasonable weapon. It just needs a bit of finesse to get going. Of course, the Talon's trip mines are amazing, so there's that.
The second class I unlocked was the Female Turian Cabal Vanguard. Now this class is infuriatingly glitchy right now. Her main attack, Poison Strike, is a biotic charge that causes her to teleport forward, passing through enemies as she inflicts poison damage on the enemies she's phasing through. Except, half the time, I'm not even hitting anyone. After ten minutes of playing her, I started to realize that I wasn't earning any points with her because I wasn't doing any damage with her Poison Strike. Something much worse then what's going on with the omni-bow is afflicting Poison Strike. It's unfortunate for me because I specced into Poison Strike first before anything else. Biotic Focus sounds cool, as it gives you a ton of buffs and healing and Nightshade Blades is just Ballistic Blades from the Batarians but using ammo. The Cabal Vanguard should be cool with those two power plus teleportation. But I can't use those powers because I accidentally specced into a broken power.
I am female, hear me roar
I'm having some trouble with the Reckoning pack because I've received the two kits that seem like they need the most attention for fine-tuning. The Geth Juggernaut is bar none, the tankiest kit ever introduced into the game. He absolutely cannot evade or even run but he has 3000 shields before upgrades, can deploy a shield repairing turret, a hard light shield, gain damage resistance, and drain the shields from other enemies. Plus, he's thee first character ever who's immune to instant kill attacks.
The Krogan Warlord has less shields, but can regenerate health while in a melee frenzy and is capable of doing obscene amounts of single damage with his warhammer. He can be instant killed sure, but at least he can run, unlike the Juggernaut.
And everyone thinks the most OP character is the Alliance Infiltration Unit. An infiltration built specifically for cloaking, shotgunning, debuffing, and has access to a self-buff that gives her extreme survivability plus self-rez. Please don't nerf her until I get to unlock her please.
I haven't even mentioned the mysterious Awakening Collector yet but he seems like a neat, unorthodox biotic kit. Dark Sphere doesn't work in ways most biotics are used to but when you figure it out, it is extremely powerful.
Yup. I'm stuck with kits that need a bit more work while the other kits that I haven't been able to unlock are downright fun and exciting.
I want to make the Talon Mercenary work most of all but the mechanical problems with his bow, not his damage figures, are most damning. I still topped the scoreboard with this guy and everyone's complaining about his lack of damage but goddamn is the omni-bow unsatisfying to use. Weird since using a bow in just about any other game in 2013 was the most gratifying thing in the world.
