That new Cleaveland show is a borderline travesty. It's the exact same show from the trailers I've seen. It'll just be Cleaveland now who makes all the lead-ins to the jokes that have absolutely no context.
The Simpsons is still admittedly amusing, but just lasted way too long. You've got to admit the newer episodes just aren't as memorable as some of the classic Simpsons adventures, the Flaming Moe episode being among them. Also I hate what they've done to the characters. Homer used to be a lovable slob with a good heart and a bad temper. These days he's just stupid and wimpy.
If you're still a Simpsons fan, no disrespect at all, but I can't say I've found the show that charming since almost 10 years ago or more.
I grew up with The Simpsons and I can admit to having some retro goggles on the subject. That being said, I still think it's one of the best-written shows on the air today, and the movie was fantastic. The thing is... It's been competing with itself for mindshare for 20 years, and I think we've become a little more jaded as a society. What was fresh and irreverent in 1991 is harmless and stale today. Put another way, our memories of what was fresh and irreverent are hard to compete against. I guess what I'm saying is, I don't think the show's quality has dipped, but there's only so long a familiar concept can remain interesting, and maybe our expectations are a little higher now. As a side note, that might be why I enjoyed Futurama so much-- it took the excellent Simpsons writing staff and let them go completely bonkers in a universe that wasn't limited by the same rules.
Still, I do think The Simpsons isn't as well made as it used to be. The actual stories behind the episodes, I can't can't find them amusing. I don't know how to put it, but for me what made the classic Simpsons episodes quality was the fact that every episode was a genuine weird little story, whereas the newer episodes I can't help but think of them as "The Simpsons Go to _____!!!"
It's hard to say if the writing really is worse or the same since then. The show's almost as old as I am. How easy is it to objectively judge something like that? All I've got is my gut on this one.
The Simpsons Season 3-9 is note perfect. After that it goes completely downhill. Probably because all the best writers went to Futurama...and rightly so. If you still defend it, that's your opinion. BUT IT'S WRONG!!! Family Guy really picked up around the Season 3-5 mark, but after that you just get one good episode or sketch out of a series. American Dad! had a brilliant premise but it got wasted and it seems kind of redundant now that the Republicans aren't in charge anymore.
So yeah...the real winner will always be Futurama for me. It's just been perfect all the way through. Sadly, it'll be forever stuck under the shadow of The Simpsons, when it's actually the better show of the two.
Also, don't swear off flying. If you do, how will I meet you at PAX East?
... and glad to hear that you are starting to feel better Qalamari!!
When Futurama began is when the Simpsons should have ended.
Fap dem 'caps!
