What a day!
I don't get into politics much at Dtoid, but America? You made the right choice/
Everyone and his brother bought Halo 4
today. Unless your me and then your awesome bro picked up two copies at a midnight launch and surprised you with one in the morning.
It's great of course. I haven't gotten too deep into it yet but a few rounds in Team Slayer let me know this is going to be the big multiplayer game for awhile. I love how easy it is to party up with friends, drop into games, vote on maps and all that. Everything is so streamlined and easy – well, at least when the servers are up.
I don't know how it happened, but Halo 4
has really gotten under my skin. Maybe it is the new Promethean weapons with all the groovy tron lights and disintegrating kill shots. Lord knows I love to de-rezz a fool. It could be 343 Studios hype-talk about the importance of story and character in this Halo
. I always felt like the previous games felt a little shallow and even hackneyed on occasion, so hearing that they want players to invest in the story and characters this time is a great sign. I'm also pumped to hear they'll be addressing some of the cool lore around the A.Is like Cortana, maybe make good on some of the stuff hinted at way back during I Love Bees
More likely though it was probably the Forward Unto Dawn
web series. I was sceptical when it was announced but it turned out to be shockingly good!
I'll be getting into more Halo
as soon as I dig myself out from under the word-mountain that is Nanowrimo.
And there is of course the other 40 ton elephant in the room.
Much to my shame I'm still playing Mechwarrior Online
. It's still crazy imbalanced, still has the grimiest of F2P money-ringer schemes, and has some of the worst UI decisions I've ever seen. Everything Halo 4
does right when it comes to match-making, MWO
spins it around, covers it in fire-ants and kicks it down the stairs.
But it's also fun in this weird super-specific way. There is nothing else quite like it out there right now. I get a big kick keeping track of all the spinning plates and craziness that goes on during a fire-fight. So despite all the weirdness and broken parts, the game kinda wormed its way into my heart.
- It's bad, but... PEW PEW PEW!
* - What the- Cutie Honey posts a fucking novel about Holmes and his CRAZY ideas. Remember, posting your twitter arguments is cool beans.
* - It's OK to like different things! If modern triple A games aren't tickling your balls, get your fix with the indies, retros, and experimentals. So long as you're not a snooty dick about how "consolized" everything else is, have a blast.
* - There are some bloggers here that don't get near the attention they deserve. GlowBear puts the spotlight on em.
* - I love that one of the kindest things you can say about an MMO is how much it doesn't play like a typical MMO.
A - Taking a look at the current direction of the industry and some franchises to predict the future. I particularly like the part about Lost Planet's decision to split into two different designs.
P - I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't listened to Taco Tuesdays podcast yet. I really should, I have some questions about chalupas that really need answering.
W - Proving there is no such thing as karma, chess-cheater Monkey News usurps justice and wins a Wii U from Dtoid. Or rather the cash equivalent.
E - You all voted and did America proud. Thanks for electing the guy less likely to ruin the world!
T - ex275 reflects on some of his past collection.
T - The Bearded Gent gives us some early impressions of Halo 4 and reminds us that the grim spectre of age is always at work, gnawing away at our once sprightly reflexes.
F - NOW ENTERING FLAVOUR COUNTRY. Brett does the dew. Hard.
F - GET YOUR FACE BLASTED WITH TASTE. Chris Carter takes it like a man.
F - THE REAL FLAVOUR STARTS NOW. Cutie Honey is dewin' it well.
C - Honkin huge review of TOR by Michael Graening. Kinda dry and could use some pictures. I was excited by the title specifying that it was post-patch. I would love to see more reviews that follow a game as it gets patched and communities evolve/evaporate. Sadly he was just pointing out that he didn't start playing till post-patch.
C - Another review by Michael, this time for XCOM. Again, kind of dry and flavourless. He does a great job explaining the actual mechanics of the game but doesn't convey any of the frustration and exhilaration of playing it. Just constructive criticism man, you might want to add in some pics and work on adding a little "voice" to the review.
F - He's new so go easy on him, but cross-posting is still a fail move.
F - Call me a dick for failing this review of MGS2. I don't care. Stop doing this. MGS2 was a uniquely fucked up masterpiece of an artist telling his audience where to shove it. There are a hell of a lot more interesting things to say than "Score: 7/10"
