The (not a carbon-copy) Memory Stick .1: Vivi's Origins (FFIX)

Today, I wish to share a moment with you readers of Destructoid to be one of the most heartbreaking, yet under appreciated moment of one of my favorite games: Final Fantasy IX. However, before I can explain it, a bit of the story needs to be explained first.

The Set-Up

To extremely summarize the early story, the game begins with Zidane, a thief, kidnapping Princess Garnet of Alexandria during a play performance, which eventually brings Steiner, a royal knight, and Vivi, a black mage who has no clue of his origins. Princess Garnet reveals at one point her actual desire to be kidnapped and to escape from Alexandria, which also binds Steiner to do her bidding. Along the way, the group stops at dali, a mountain village. Once at the strange village, the party notices no presence of adults, and Vivi is kidnapped by two children, and this is when the moment happens.

The Moment (See? I told you this is where it happens!)

Vivi is soon rescued by the party, only to find out that he is in a factory. Upon further inspection, it is revealed that the product of the factory is...Vivi. It turns out that Vivi, the quiet, polite, and sensitive black mage is a product that was made only to be used in the queens army, which contradicts what a loving character he actually is. Video coming up...

(altered names, in this video, but the best quality I could find for the section)
Unfortunately, the maker of the video is a prick, but here's a link.

The Reaction

Surprisingly, as much of a key plot point this was, in addition to being heartbreaking that Vivi was made to be everything he isn't (let alone the fact that he's not an actual person), this moment in the game seems extremely forgotten But for me and a few others who still remember the masterpiece that FFIX was, the moment remains one of the most heart-wrenching throughout the entire experience. Vivi still remains to be one of the most important characters in the cast, and the issue of his identity comes up more than once again in the game, but thats for another memory stick...

Kinda decent post but it definitely needs more meat, man.

Also, image tags are your friend.

Yeah, but for a first attempt, I'm pretty happy with it...
