Well, this past weekend I got the chance to go and visit a few friends of mine at a gaming store called Digital Press. At the end of every month, they host a get together/mini party which features tournaments, snacks, and such. One of the really cool aspects is that the owner of the store allows people to come in with their stuff to trade or sell to other people who come in that day. He makes no money off of this, but allows it anyway.

That's how fucking awesome this store and the owner are.

I stopped in this past Saturday during the meeting to see if anyone was selling anything interesting. A friend of mine who I see at the store was selling a Neo Geo Pocket Color, in perfect conidition, with five games, an AC adapter, and a small case he was using to store it. All this....for $35. I bought it in a heartbeat.

Here be pictures:

Here's the NGPC itself. The screen is fine, and the joystick on it feels absolutely amazing. Sony, put this into the PSP, it feels absolutely amazing, and it's incredibly responsive. The buttons aren't sticky in the slightest, and the system itself is very clean. It was definitely very well taken care of.

And here are the games, they each came in their own case.

Metal Slug is Metal Slug, except with the addition of a lifebar, when that empties out, it's a game over. So technically, you have one life per continue. This makes it a bit challenging, which is nice.

Capcom vs. SNK Cardfighters Clash is surprisingly good. I don't usually play CCG's much, let alone on a console. The system is pretty straightforward and simple, which is probably why I like it, not to mention that it's got Capcom and SNK characters. That doesn't exactly hurt it either.

Capcom vs. SNK: The Match of The Millennium is everything you'd want in a handheld fighter. Everything is really well balanced, and challenging. When you consider that there's also around 12 minigames inside, and that it can hook up to the Dreamcast for added content, you start to realize how amazing this game is.

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure is...alright. I've never been too big of a Sonic fan growing up, but I already spent quite a bit of time on this one, and I'm really enjoying it. There are some pretty annoying parts, but nothing that makes me want to stop playing it.

And last but not least, Crush Roller, the only game that needs an explanation. You play as a ball of paint who needs to run over the entire floorspace of a maze/floor while being chased by two other blobs. Most of the time they're faster than you, so you need to lead them into crushers o you can get about 10 seconds without them so you can go and paint more of the floor. Oh, and once they're crshed, they come back faster and smarter.

Overall, I'm incredibly happy with my NGPC so far. This little machine is great, and it's a shame that it received such little attention and ultimately died out.

Also, I got these in NYC a few weeks ago at Toy Tokyo, figured I'd share them here. Two Dragon Quest bottlecaps and a magnet from....some anime series. I just thought he looked cool, so I got him for a dollar.

:D

Before we hung out this weekend, I had never even seen, let alone touched, one of these things.

I think the original Neo Geo Pocket came out for $65 retail, which is really sad considering it didn't sell well over here.

Capcom vs. SNK Cardfighters Clash is AWESOME. I honestly want to get a Neo Geo Pocket just for that.

Match of the Millennium is amazing. Sad that so few people have actually played it.

It would be great if SNK ported the game to DSiWare or something. It's really sad that so few people have played it.

Samurai Showdown 2 is also really good.

I remember this coming out, but never had any interest in it (I remember this one kid at day camp had one...). Also, I'm pretty sure the GBA came out the same year that this did.

Awesome stuff, man. The little magnet is from an anime called Sergent (or Sgt., not sure) Frog, by the way. :)

As Thunderheart already said, the magnet is from an anime called Keroro Gunsou (aka Sergeant Frog). The character you have is named Giroro.

Cotton is a sidecroller schmup with a witch, yeah??

I saw one of these NeoGeo Pockets in my local Gamestation for cheap. Was tempted but thought games might be hard to come by in the UK.

Nice! I'm getting very close to finding a gem of my own that I've wanted for over seven years, a Sega Dreamcast. My friend has one, is going to give it to me, the downside? No cords, not even a controller. But a quick drive cross the bridge to a retro game store may prove fruitful, if not, at least there's EBAY...

I took it out a few days back and man, I didn't realize how bulky and heavy that mother was, is and always will be!

My friend's got one! Wonder if I can bribe him to part with it. It would complement my Neo Geo CD.

A friend once found one laying on the street with King of Fighters, the damn thing sadly didn't turn on but he still got it stored somewhere in his cabinets.

The NeoGeo is a duke in the console history, I wish I could get this in my hands.

this is an easy candidate for the best handheld ever, nice graphics and an awesome battery life. Card Fighter Clash and Match of the Millenium are the best two games. God Evil Ryu is insane. If only the other Card Fighter games were this good =(. The DS game is shit in comparison. You can buy one at a decent price online from Toys and Joys AND they have Faselei - though all games are Jap version =(

@Toadofsky

if you want to buy a dreamcast off eBay, the guy who runs Digital Press (where Cataract got the NeoGeo) has an ebay store. His prices on systems are usually pretty good and when I worked there this summer he had plenty of DC's sitting in the basement. If you send him a message telling him your interested he would probably sell you one. Store policy is just like Gamestop: all systems are testing when they come in to make sure they work properly.

I still have and play my Neo Geo pocket. It's not as well taken care of at that one (a little dirty with a scuf or two), but it's still a damn fine piece of electronic paradise.
