About Me
Hi, Castle is the handle, and welcome to my blog. Here, you'll find me talking about the awesomeness of everything that is awesome, namely myself. I'll sprinkle a little somethin' about games and other nerdy crap from time to time—probably. I can't make any promises. Hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoy writing!

Left 4 Racism
Castle | 8:27 AM on 07.16.2009 15 comments

If you follow Left 4 Dead news like I do, you know about douchebag blogger Willie Jefferson, who apparently has nothing of real interest or merit write about in order to generate page views, and his recent douchebag article on racism in video games. In the article, he criticizes forthcoming Valve title Left 4 Dead 2 for its racism, due to having 'several black zombies'. Because, apparently, there are no black people in New Orleans. Go figure. Guess Hurricane Katrina wiped 'em all out, huh? But hey, enough digression.

While I believe that Left 4 Dead does contain racism, it is not for the same reasons Jefferson noted in his blog. The racism in the Left 4 Dead games lies not within its gameplay or story, but within some of its players. Its crackbrained, ignorant, insecure players. With headsets.

When it comes to L4D 2, I am one of the minority that got excited about it (I'm black, too, so that makes me a double minority... or Minority Prime). But I have to keep it 100 with you guys; discovering that the game would take place in New Orleans made me a little queasy. Why? Well, for one, black folks make up a large part of New Orleans' population, which leads me to my second point. The racism that I encounter in the current Left 4 Dead is already ridiculous (I have seen people kill Louis just so that there "wouldn't be a n***er on their team"), and I knew full well that giving these idiots the chance to kill a bunch of black folks was going to make it even worse on my ears. So you know I almost had an ulcer when I heard about two of the four playable characters being black. You should have heard some of the comments I've heard people say about it while playing a L4D campaign. "I wanna buy L4D 2, but it's full of n***ers." But hey, now that I think about it, it might keep those kinds of idiots offended by an abundance of dark skinned people at bay.

But even if it doesn't... should I get mad and never play again? No. I'm the kind of guy that believes that going up in arms over someone calling me something disrespectful means letting the terrorists win (take that Osama). That, and the fact that if Left 4 Dead, 1 or 2, had zero black folks in it, the racism would still be there. I'd still hear the N-word getting spammed every ten seconds by a fourteen year old sore loser. I'd still get kicked out of games due to the color of my avatar's skin—strange, I know. Especially in 2009. But it happens. As a black gamer—as a black MAN—I have come to grips with the fact that racism is just a part of certain people. And always will be. So, I either suck it up and perhaps do something about it, or whine every time I see a confederate flag or a couple of black people get killed in a video game.

Jefferson needs to be thankful for Left 4 Dead to be honest. Valve could have portrayed us as really bad stereotypes in their new playable characters, but they haven't from what I've seen. They could have had black zombies swaggering down the street with 40s in their hands instead of attacking the Survivors like everyone else. And what the hell is he doing playing Call of Juarez anyway? The game sucks.

Also, an interesting sidenote. When I first played L4D, one of the first things I said was: "Oh, so there ain't no black zombies in this city?"

Are you serious? That's messed up.

I was planning on writing a blog about this one, since I blogged so much about the RE5 issue. But it almost doesn't warrant a specific response. I haven't had a chance to read the article myself, but it feels like his focus is misguided.

As you note, the worry of racism in game should focus on whats happening in MP matches, instead of what's being programmed in..

While, yes, that's entirely fucked up that you have to put up with stupid beheaviour like that. The worst I ever come across are the people that continually make some silly comment about how "the black guy will probably die first" a~la horror-movie tropes, which I don't personally find offensive, though not particularly witty or funny either.

I'd argue that though the inclusion of black characters may INSPIRE some idiots to make some comments in some backwater servers, that racism as a form of prejudice isn't actually inherent in the game proper.

And seriously, you should find better people to play with. I wouldn't stand for that shit.

They won't avoid L4D2 because there are more black people, they'll cherish and relish the chance to kill tons of black people in 4 player co-op.

It's never going to get better, is it?

I'm glad that through affirmative action I will have the opportunity to kill zombies who, though pale and rotted now, used to be of every color and hue.

Don't anyone bring the word "ashy" into this. Shit will just spiral out of control.

I've never heard any racism on xbox live when I play L4D.... but pretty much everybody online annoys me so I spend most of the game with the other player muted unless they happen to be cool and not douches.

I've heard plenty of racism- I live in Texas. And every time I've ever played with a black guy OR a white guy who sounds black you have about 20 ignorant ass 10 year olds screaming N* constantly- This Jefferson guy needs to devote his time to racist ass parents bringing up little spawns of slave owners and calling them children. Nobody gives two shits about what color the character they're using or killing as long as the game is fun and they are not a racist themselves. I wouldn't be a bit suprised if this Willie Jefferson guy is a complete racist. Someone who isn't would not raise such a stink about nothing. Man that's a bad double negative... Racism!

Oh- and P.s. hopefully you can turn team killing off on L4D2. And an easy mute feature.

Ah, racism. Such a fucking unbalanced topic.

For once, everything could be racist for someone in many perspectives.

1. If there are no black people in the game, that's racist.
2. If there are black enemies in the game, that's racist.
3. If there are black people as main characters, that's racist against white people (as if there was any racial protest on them)
4. If there are only black people on it, that's racist as black people kill each other.

There is a huge hard philosphical questions that goes like: "Are there more stupid people than good people?" In my opinion, we are surrrounded by idiots everywhere, so it is no wonder there will be piss-drinking fucktard that has a huge interview with O'Reilly spitting bullshit about stuff he doesn't know.

Also it's sad how many kids use the word "nigger" with barely knowing what it means or at least how insulting or stupid it is too. I used to be one of those yelling guys in MMOs years ago but I don't recall using racial terms. Maybe I did, but I was a shit head when I was 14 too.

I was going to ask if you were playing on XBL or on Steam, but come to think of it, I've heard comments like the ones you're referring to on both versions... zombie players targetting Louis because they "like the dark meat," shit like that. It's sad that you can't escape the lowest common denominator even when you're supposed to be having fun. The best you can do is build up a strong friends list and only play with known quantities.

I'm gonna topsauce this in tonight's recaps, you made me think about something in a way I hadn't considered before.

This is why I never use voice chat when I play games. It's unbelievable the sheer amount of ignorant and hateful things people will say over the internet, that and the fact that most of the time they don't even get that they are being ignorant or hateful. Kids just repeat the words and phrases that they've heard others shouting indiscriminately and think the words carry no more weight then calling someone stupid.

Ah the sad state of the world, when we have to remind people that others might have feelings and take offense at having their ethnicity, gender, sexuality ect, called out over a game.
