As an older, more experienced gamer, I feel sometimes that it is my job to give back to the community. Much like Tribal Elders of old, it is our responsibility to impart wisdom to young, eager would-be warriors, eager to earn their stripes in the treacherous savannah of gaming.
Up until now, I have sat back reading various comments on blogs, with your "Halo" this and your "Orange Box" that, miserly holding back the true secret of gaming bliss, sharing with my fellow "initiated" gaming's one true paragon in whispers, watching the youth floundering around blindly in pursuit of this holy grail of games.
Now, m'lads (and m'ladettes...erm), flounder no more, for the holy grail that you seek is the game
Deus Ex, developed by Ion Storm.
"Why bring this up now?", you may ask. Well, various gaming sites and blogs have released the news that Ubisoft have refused to put a bid in for Eidos, publisher of Deus Ex.
Ubisoft, while having made many classics in their time, could only hope to purchase what people (those that count, anyway) have termed, "The Perfect IP".
Hah! Only in your wildest dreams, Ubisoft!
I put it to the gaming community that there are only two possible reasons Ubisoft would not purchase Eidos -
1) They felt that they would not be worthy to hold such responsibility, and knew that no matter how hard they tried, they could never live up to expectations
or
2) They were afraid that weilding such massive power would perpetually place all other Ubisoft IPs in the shadow of this one, purchased IP.
The cyberpunk dystopian nightmare setting, intelligent philosophy, meaningful and freeform gameplay, rich and full world, jarring plot twists, all combine to craft the finest single player experience known to gaming.
The only true form of educational entertainment ever created
I don't have to elaborate on what makes this game so good, words cannot do it justice. You owe it to yourselves to research this game yourselves, and then by logical extension, purchase 7 copies.
I would be remiss if I did not mention the few
miniscule flaws in the game to you first, in the interest of remaining objective. After all, I wouldn't want you guys to think that I wasn't being objective, would I? <ahem>
The only true faults with this game are as follows -
1) you haven't played it, and
2) there isn't a new one (yet)
Go. Now. Remember to mark this day in your calendars as the day you heard about Deus Ex, so you may carry on the memory for yourselves and for all posterity.
Oh, and the sequel, while not as good, wasn't bad either. Let's hope that whoever eventually purchases Eidos can resurrect the series and take it back to its roots, eh?
You may thank me for revealing this to you in the comments section below. That is all.

Fact: Super Noah's Ark 3D is the Best. Game. Ever.
i started playing this game after reading a post very similar to this one, however, i lost interest before i had even finished the training mission.
Super 3D Noah's ark WAS pretty good ;)
And Dopefish, I would expect someone with such an iconic avatar to have more dedication than that! Off with ye!
space jam...
Very nice, truly the best PC game ever in my opinion, but the best game ever belongs to Battletoads for the NES....shit, I'm gonna make a post on how much that game rules very soon.
I thought this was going to be a post about Yaris.
We don't get Yaris down here in Australia, unfortunately, so we have to make do with old PC games released in 2000 ;P
This game owns. i still play it. It's the reason i actually started gaming on the PC. Still hoping that rumors of a 3rd installment hold true.
I played the game last summer and absolutely loved it. I couldn't believe just how good it was and reading this makes me want to play it again. Although I doubt that's going to happen as there is way too much to play over the next couple of months.
Also, didn't eidos announce the next installment a while back?
Sorry for the double post, but literally seconds after posting I confirmed that there is a sequel in the works...sorta...i think.
It would seem that the director of Eidos France said that they were working on a third Deus Ex game and that it was the companies "first mission". You can read about it in this friendly url.

I'd link ya, but I have no idea how too.
I didn't see you mention the sequel (maybe I missed it) but it came out years ago and sucked horribly.
But yes, the original Deus Ex is an amazing game. I would say either this or System Shock 2 are my favorite games ever. If you haven't played System Shock 2 you absolutely must...it was huge inspiration for Deus Ex.
They are supposedly working on a third but I'm skeptical that it will ever be finished...and if it does get released I'm not very hopeful that it will be any good after the horrible sequel.
I remember jacking up my Physical Strength when I played it... when I got that 'effing sword it was heaven!
Damnit, I need the GotY edition so I can play it on my PC. I want to play it now! :p
Thank you for bringing this game back in to memory.
is the ps2 version any good? the same?
I actually beat the PC and PS2 versions and the PC version is definitely far better because the game is really complicated and having a mouse and so many keys makes things MUCH easier. Not to mention the PS2 couldn't handle some of the levels so they were redesigned and not as interesting, plus way more/longer load times.
I would say if you don't have a PC that can run Deus Ex the PS2 version is worth getting, but honestly who has a PC that bad these days? Everyone should be able to run Deus Ex at max settings now on their PC. Buy it on Steam. I just beat it again not that long ago.
Yeah I read about the sequel in development, lets hope they actually go through with it.
I played the PS2 one for a bit as well, i def recommend the PC one over it though.
