I just recently read an article written by
Raychul Moore over at Gametopius.com about the drama that infests the female gamer social circles here in our Industry. It seems, if anything, that Raychul wants to take a stand against those attention-hungry females by.. well, bringing attention to the prospective problems.
What bothers me about this article is the fact that it so firmly juts it's chin out as if the writer is better than all of it. Let's face it, being a female in a heavily male-driven Industry is very difficult as it is and no matter where you are, proving yourself is a necessity in order to survive it. Games journalism is no different and even though we want to think that there's no sexism in our workplaces, there is. I believe even Raychul forgets that her sex sells and has sold many times before, because if it was all about not promoting a bad reputation and being taken seriously.. well, we won't go there. This isn't a smear campaign, just a reality check.
The thing is, bitching and drama is best left on episodes of "The Hills" and superiority complexes are best left on "Sex in the City", not here in our little hallowed halls of the Internet. Some people shouldn't sling mud at the fluffy pink group of girl gamers with faux attitude when they used to belong to the same little eight-bit clique themselves. That's all I'm saying. Just shut it up. Take a look at where you came from, who helped you get there and get some humble pie.
Shockingly enough, you say you don't mean this in regards to all females but you shine a glaring light without giving examples. Do you know girls who are these females you speak of? Did this spawn off some fight that you had with another gamer girl? Is this some angry and bitter post to make you feel better and to get some male feedback? Is this validation?
I don't know, personally I think the subject is tired but I know a lot of female gamers that would take heavy offense to your words. Not because they're who you're speaking of but because it comes from you. What made you the end-all-be-all to female gamers? When did we name you ambassador? Just chill out on all the finger-pointing and haughty crap. It just makes you look bitchy.
And to the men who stand behind the cute girls who have their firm beliefs; stop it. Really. The post bitches about attention whores but she brings attention to it thusly proving that the circle never ends.
So, let's put a stop to it. No more gamer "grrls" and no more bitching about bitching. It's just lame. If you have a complaint, own it and complain without regret!

Candice

ANYWHO. On the subject of this, I'm going to continue to stand by my opinion that if you need to strongly identify yourself with some sort of label other then "gamer" then I'm mostly going to ignore you. "girl gamer", "Hardcore gamer", "Halo gamer", or whatever. Don't. Care. It strikes me as the same dumb high school shit of labeling yourself a "goth" or "jock" and such. Who cares. Be you. Not a group.
In short. I agree with you.
and I doubt you are older then me.

On a somewhat related note: a female friend of my roommate was trying to tell us that no girl actually likes sports and that they're lying if they say they do. And she was dead serious. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry at her, but I was facepalming for a good half-hour.

I could not care less what you call yourself.
As long as you shoot straight, check your corners, defend the flag, police the dead, and t-bag on you own time,
You'll be okay in my book.

I get what your on about though. It's annoying and frustrating. Human nature is to bitch, moan and nit pick. It's the way people are most of them time.
She's prolly upset because more people have called her an attention whore again. I'm so fed up with this subject now though but then until things change it's always going to be this way.

I think part of the problem is when a girl starts getting into games, guys can be like ZOMG YOU LIKE GAME SEX ME PLZ and all that attention can get to your head. In my town, everyone in my group of friends (guys and girls) played games so it was never a big deal (in fact, I am STILL the only girl in my group of friends that doesn't play WoW). Then I got to college and it was like this crazy reality check for me when guys were like, You play games! SO RAD! And it took me a while to adjust to that attitude.
Some girls just never adjust. They like the attention and when it starts to wane, they just post cute pics of themselves or something to start the attention up again. It's kind of more like an insecurity issue I guess.
Also, the first sentence of that article is the biggest lie I have ever read.

If anything her article seems to project the very thing she is complaining about, girls who use the net to promote themselves as gurl gamers to get attention.
lame...

That being said, I think that it is one thing to bring up a hot button topic to discuss like adults in a community and another thing to right out rant. Not only that, but generalize, stereotype and belittle at the same time.
I'm sorry but, the rest of the female gaming world is all working together. You see events like Angels and Vixens party during E for All. You see shows like Coin Op TV where 4 seperate sites come together to support one guest and you think ... is it really that bad?
That being said, it's also in how one chooses to represent themselves. If you make a choice to put yourself out there to attract the men, you ARE going to have flack from the girls. Simple as that. That is human nature and that's just the way things work.
Anyhow, you hit the nail on the head Candice. It IS a bit challenging to be taken seriously in the gaming community but you have to EARN that credibility just like in any other profession.

I just ignore these people, this kind of shit will never stop. Just play games, be yourself and try to have as much fun as possible.
Badabing, badaboom.

That's exactly what I said aloud, when I read the link that Atheistium posted, after reading the original "girl gamer" article Candice posted. I think I can count the times that I've seriously called a woman a "stupid bitch" on one hand. It's usually rude, disrespectful, and uncalled for.
It was entirely called for, in this case. Raychul, you're a hypocritical idiot. Good show, Candice.

Personally, I hate the "You give gamer chicks a bad name" posts because they're done so often. However, when I know there is someone out there just setting us all back thousands of years.. I have to say something. I think I handled myself well. Haha.

she can shove the guitar up her vag for all i care. I don't know this girl, her modeling doesn't bother me, what other might call 'attention whore-ness' doesn't bother me. what bothers me is how this article points the finger at me and every other girl who plays games, as though we are ruining something for her, when really articles like this, make it the other way around.
There are many times Ive thought of responding how you have, but i can never articulate myself well enough. so well done.
