So last week I purchased my first game console that was not made by Nintendo. I've wanted a PS3 for a while, and I was finally able to find one for a decent price on eBay. I was fortunate enough to find a CECHE01 model, which supports PS2 games as well as PS1.
Anyway, here's why I chose a PS3 as my first non-Nintendo console:
More Reliable Hardware
Nearly everyone I know who owns a 360 has experienced the dreaded Red Ring of Death. That's not something I want to deal with. I don't care how good Microsoft's customer service is. I don't want to settle back for a nice evening of gaming, only to have my experience ruined by the 360's shoddy hardware. Besides, I'm the kind of gamer who likes to hang on to his old consoles. What's going to happen 10 years from now when Microsoft has dropped support of the 360? I don't want to be left with a dead console.
More Games That I Want to Play
I can't think of a single 360 exclusive that highly interests me. That's a fact. Pretty much everything on the 360 that interests me is also on the PS3. The PS3 also has exclusives such as MGS4 and LBP. It turns out that even the "ZOMG 360 EXCLUSIVE" MGS Rising is going to be multi platform, which is awesome.
Also. I specifically chose a CECHE01 model because I want to play PS2 games on my PS3. I still do not understand why the hell all PS3s are not fully backwards compatible from the get-go. Seriously, what the hell? It would add value to the PS3, and I would likely have bought one sooner. I think the Wii is the only current-gen console that got backwards compatibility right.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with my purchase. Right now I'm playing MGS4, LBP, and Bioshock. I'm really enjoying those. What other games do you think I should try out?

Sorry I didn't suggest any specific games. I personally have Street Fighter IV, Dead Space, LBP, MGS4, COD4 & 5, GTA4, Mirror's Edge, Watchmen, Ratchet and Clank, Lego Star Wars, Killzone 2, Burn Zombie Burn, Flower, Flow, Pixeljunk Eden/Racers/Monsters, Noby Noby Boy, Crash Bandicoot 1 and CTR, Pain, Worms, Rag Doll Kung Fu, Bionic Commando, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Battlefield 1943 and Super Stardust HD and Cellfactor.
I would recommend them all. I know I contradicted myself by listing all my PS3 games :)
But yeah, PS3's exclusives are its biggest strength. 360 has a great online service compared to Sony. It's really pretty awesome. But I chose PS3 because I figure I'll get the most out of it in the long run.
Haha congrats on the purchase, you won't be disappointed.
I still prefer my PS3 for any action game, and that's not even mentioning the amazing media playing and internet browser capabilities.
I hope you enjoy the console!
@jehuty
I too was disappointed with LBP and MGS4. I felt MGS4's plot suffered because of how much information Kojima tried to cram into it and LBP was more hype than substance for those who couldn't make interesting levels.
@arresteddeveloper
More hype than substance?! Sounds like you are talking about Fable 2.
Is all you needed to say.
ArrestedDeveloper: Minority makes the Majority look bad.
kezins on PSN
Other suggestions are:
Killzone 2
Uncharted: Drakes Fortune
Ratchet & Clank
Resistance 2
PSN:
Shatter
Droplitz
Pretty much every Sony exclusive is amazing. I agree with you about the MS exclusives they don't do anything for me. While the PS3 exclusives are awesome, every single one (except for Haze maybe but even though it's incredibly shitty I had tons of fun while playing it in co-op).
Other non-exclusives I recommend:
Burnout: Paradise
Fallout 3
Lego: Star Wars the complete saga.
Battlefield 1943
and probably a lot more!
You know what? I think I'm gonna play MGS4 again. For the 4th time.
@Arrested Developer
Saying that about LBP while you can't make any levels yourself doesn't make a good point.
... and one of the reasons that they dropped BC was to bring the price down.
I'd suggest some games but it seems like the previous comments have been hitting a lot of the strong points... but let me add that SuperStardust HD and Everyday Shooter are fantastic (and inexpensive) downloads.
Add me, if you want. My PSN is Jognny. Maybe I'll see you on MGO or LBP!
While I'd agree that the PS3 hardware has a better track record than the 360 there are people here, myself included, that have had to send their PS3 into Sony. Its good you like it, but don't think that it can't go bad on you.
Fallout 3
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection
Burnout Paradise
(Below are all PSN digital downloads)
Wipeout HD + Fury
Bomberman Ultra
PixelJunk Eden
Bionic Commando Rearmed
But yeah, I needed that legacy backward compatibility also, plus like you, I came from and am used to Nintendo's 'built-to-last' efficiency, and so far my PS3 has been an awesome experience. Hope yours is too
PS3 has a lot of good sides and just can't see where are the bad sides of this console, internet connection is free and easy to setup! The games are strong and getting better each year
( Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank: CT)
So good choice and continue making nice choices like that!
Heavenly Sword is also a very good game for one of the PS3's first releases, get that if you need a small God Of War type fix for the time being until GOW3 does indeed come out (march next year, ugh, im so impatient)
