In short, I am looking to get a PS3 sometime in the next six months. Still, I am a bit of a noob when it comes to SCE and I was hoping to get a little assistance from the community and insight a little discussion on what Sony newcomers should be looking at.
My current generation system is a Wii and I couldn’t be happier with it. Nevertheless, every console has its own selling points and interests and I have also wanted a PS3 for a while, but it was not a comfortable financial possibility until recently.
I have never owned a system that was not made by Sega or Nintendo, nor did I really know anyone with a PSX or PS2 until I got to college, so I am relatively in the dark about most classic Sony games. (Right now I’m trying to negotiate a trade for MGS Twin Snakes for the ‘cube to see if I enjoy that franchise or not).
I am particularly interested in hearing about your highly anticipated titles that are not out yet, but will be in the next year or so. For myself, that list contains Borderlands, I am Alive, Wet and Heavy Rain.
My one fear about getting a PS3 is that I will have nothing but brawlers and shooters. When I pick the system up it will definitely be with Killzone 2, Far Cry 2 and The Bigs 2 so I won’t be off to a good start with that. I liked Super Street Fighter II and Soul Calibur II (Lots of 2’s there hmm…) so maybe I’ll pick up SFIV or SCIV. Burn Zombie Burn and Flower look intriguing.
Anyways, any suggestions of anything great, weird, or off the radar of the general public would be nice, as well as warnings to stay away from any names with big names that might not be as good as they were hyped and or reviewed to be (For the life of me I can’t understand how a GTA game is the highest rated game on the system).
Thanks!
I'd suggest you to pick up LittleBigPlanet, I know that everyone talks about it and seems like it will get boring fast, but it's much more fun when you are with a friend fucking up shit. Especially with the rockets.
I'm not really a huge fan of Metal Gear Solid, but maybe you can get a hang of it.
Ratchet and Clank is a MUUUUUST if you love a good action game, they are silly full of explosions and pretty addictive, I don't know why there aren't more of them now as R&C has the feeling of the old PlayStation platformers.
And Mirror's Edge is freaking cool despite all the bad reviews. The controls are pretty weird, but once you get used to them it feels amazing. It is probably my favorite "serious" game this generation counting also how colorful it is. I still don't get why so many games have to be so gray.
And last but not least, I have heard many good things about Uncharted. I still haven't tried it but it looks like open exploration with good action elements.
But one super excellent game I had the pleasure of playing is Uncharted. It destroyed my expectations and I dearly loved every miniute of that game, in fact I played through it 5 times alreay, buying it just over two months ago.
It is a perfect hybrid of game genres, and has one of THE most likeable main leads I have played in a game. Nathan Drake really is the man.
Oh, and Flower, as Jimbo said, is almost a relgious expereince, seriously, download that game.
Pixeljunk Eden, Monsters and Racers are a must as well, they are small (but VERY popular) independent game studio. They are releasing Shooter as well soon.
Dead Space is amazing, Skate is good (much better than Tony Hawks), any Lego game, Prince of Persia.
Remember you will also have the many PS1 classics on the PSN store.
Super Stardust HD, Noby Noby Boy, Battlefield 1943, Flower like you suggested, Rag Doll Kung Fu, Worms, Pain.
I could go on if I checked the store. There's so many to choose from! :]
Also, get Crash Bandicoot and Crash Team Racing, so fun :D
I look forward to seeing you in FNF's and playing against each other.
Yeah, I know about Katamari. I have a friend that loves Damacy, especially the last level.
@Wry Guy
It's not costing me anything other than postage because I'm using the forum's trade section and I'm fairly certain since PS3s aren't backwards compatible any longer, so I'm fairly sure getting something to play MGS on would be more expensive than that.
Oh, yeah, Noby Noby Boy is a must.
Get Folklore (you can find it for cheap), Mirror's Edge, LBP, Metal Gear Solid 4, Noby Noby Boy for $5, Pixeljunk Monsters if you like Tower Defense, Pixeljunk Eden if you like video games, and if you like SRPGs, Disgaea 3 (Valryia Chronicles is a good "updated" SRPG as well).
I wouldn't say Uncharted is a must have. It's a must-rent in my opinion (plus it's still so damn expensive!).
My personal favorites? Metal Gear Solid 4, Dead Space, Unreal Tournament III, and hell, if you can find a $20 Eye Of Judgment bundle with the camera at Walmart, even that wasn't bad.
First off, check out the PSN store... there are a lot of PS1 and PS2 games at good prices that can be downloaded and played on the PS3, as well as some newer and very original games. The PSN store also has sales, so some of the older titles can be bought at a really cheap price! Games like MGS, FFVII and other games are available as well as newer titles like Flower, the various PixelJunk games, Battlefield 1943 and even large games like Warhawk and SOCOM! Warhawk is coming up on 2 years old now but still has a VERY active online community and it's a really solid game with air and land battles. It's very much a team game and the planes, jeeps and tanks are a blast to use! (though the game is online only).
For upcoming games, Borderlands is definitely up there... but also Dragon Age: Origins (a Bioware REPG), Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (which will be the most popular online game once it's released), Bioshock 2 (and you can probably find Bioshock 1 on sale) and MAG. MAG is a mystery... could be great, could be awful. It's 256 player online only. Seems to be a game that can be a weekend warrior type game or a 24/7 gamer game. They want both the casual and hardcore crowd. Casuals will mostly be in the ranks, while the hardcore rank up high enough to start setting objectives for the squads.
In terms of older games that you can likely buy on sale:
The Orange Box... has Portal (an AWESOME game), the Half Life series (if you haven't played them yet, they still stand the test of time... though the gameplay at times can be a bit graphically glitchy), and also Team Fortress 2 if you want the online play. The game is worth it for Portal alone, but you also get a lot of other games.
Fallout 3 or Oblivion... both are very solid western RPG's. Oblivion you have a sword... with Fallout 3 you generally have a gun.
Little Big Planet.. every PS3 owner should have this game in their collection. You can play up to a million user created levels, or create your own as well as the levels that come with the game. It's a platformer but it's charming and it's the perfect game to pull out if you have younger kids visiting or non-gamer friends that you want to introduce to gaming. If you want to wait awhile, you could also pick up MODNation Racers which has a similar concept except it's racing, not platforming.
... and there are also the music games... Rockband, GH or Singstar... fun party games! :)
All PS3's are PS1 compatible :)
All ps3's can play PS1 games no matter the model, so you could still get the original MGS and not worry about it not running, plus it's on the PSN store anyways so you don't even have to worry about finding a hard copy.
Lair
Infamous (The Destructoid review is spot on.)
Haze
Mercenaries 2
That Punisher Game on PSN
SOCOM Confrontation
These are just some games I can think of off the top of my head that don't justify a purchase from my experience with them. However demos are up for most of those titles so go be a smart consumer and try them out when you get that big sexy black box.
Also, dunno if you already have a PS2, but it's possible to find refurbed PS3s with BC if you are so inclined.
Regardless, enjoy!
Anyway, well done Elsa for typing that out as we all couldn't be arsed to haha :]
If you can buy everything here, you'll be set for life.
It's also funny you should mention the Orange Box, as I picked it up earlier and was debating between the PS3 and CP version, but Portal and Half Life are meant for Mouse and keyboard unfortunately. Didn't want to play all three games with a pad. It's the only game I can't play on PS3 due to controls.
Personally, I don't think that the PS3 or the 360 have that many games that are worth $60, but that's just because I don't like FPSs and 3rd person shooters that much. Orange Box is cheap though, as is MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles, and rumor has it that SF IV is going to price drop to $40 and second now.
As for PSN, Noby Noby Boy, Bionic Commando Rearmed, SF 2 HD, the upcoming MvC2, and The Last Guy are my personal favorites.
And DEFINITELY get a PS3 that can play PS2 games. The PS2's library is infinitely better than the PS3's, at least for right now.
CP version? thats just sick!
Free online, Bluray player and reliable, nuff said
Twin Snakes is amazing. I don't even own a GCN or Wii and I bought that game.
As for your PS3, get Uncharted and then get Uncharted 2 this October.
Gotta get Valkyria Chronicles. Also, save room for Castle Crashers on PSNDon't forger the oldies. Assassin's Creed and Orange Box are very much worth checking out.
Did anybody say Blazblue? Blazblue.
Also, Way of the Samurai 3. Its coming out in October, ya know...
@Pedrovay
Keep them comments coming, I'm loving reading all these recs.
@Holmes
But would I enjoy MGS4 if I haven't played through the whole series? So if I jumped from Twin Snakes to 4 I might be little lost. I understand the series is very story heavy. Or do you think it can stand alone?
@people who recommended RPGS
I'll brace myself for you guys shouting blasphemy and calling me out but I've never really played an RPG...aside from Pokemon Red. The sheer number of them, my inexperience and grinding has more or less kept me away. So I've never really known where to start with that...
...
Anyone tried Prototype?
Wait for it to drop to 20 or 30 bucks.
After putting a 5 or 6 hours into it, I'm enjoying Prototype quite a bit, it does a lot of things well and is really fun after you get a few powers/skills unlocked. I'd recommend picking it up if you can find it for $30-$40. It's not really worth $60 though, too many better choices are available.
@ Tubatic RE: WotS 3
I had no idea that was coming! I'm playing WotS 2 currently, loved the first. Man, this fall's going to lay waste to my finances, much like every fall recently :P
Buy Prototype at like $30-$40: you're not missing much, and Blasto is 100% right.
Did you like Final Fantasy Tactics? DEFINITELY try to find that for PS1 (greatest hits can be cheap) and try it out. If you like strategy rpgs (rpg chess), you might like Disgaea 3.
Even if you don't play RPGs, Valkyria Chronicles is a must buy especially if it is cheap over there. With MGS4 it doesn't matter if you haven't played the whole series, it is still an enjoyable game.
If you're worried about the grinding aspect of an RPG, I would say to stay away from Disgaea 3. I would, however, suggest Valkyria Chronicles as it takes no real "grinding" effort on the part of the player (each character "class" levels up in unison, so your units don't fall behind of each other) and it really is a fantastic game. Sadly, I've yet to finish it.
I whole heartedly agree. I wasn't clear that you disliked grinding, Cad. Go with VK.

As for the storyline, it's just not realistic to expect you to beat Metal Gear 1 & 2, Metal Gear Solid 1,2, &3, AND Metal Gear Portable Ops, which is what you would need to do to understand the entire story leading up to MGS4.
Actually, it might be a better narrative experience to play MGS4 first, then go back to the other games to get the back story. Regardless, MGS4 is the most fun game in the series, which in my book makes it the best game to get started with.
Warhawk is an excellent 3PS in the sense that its fast to join action and a great thing to do when you're bored. Valkyria Chronicles is awesome. Iunno if you're an SRPG fan, but Disgaea 3 is just as good as its predecessors in many respects. NG Sigma is also fun as hell. Oh yes, and I must mention InFamous. Perhaps its not as fast paced as Prototype, but its pretty damn fun in its own right.
