Link’s Crossbow Training landed in our hangs alongside the Wii Zapper in 2008. It received mixed reviews, but most complained of the game merely being too short. Unfortunately for fans of Link's first shooting outing, plans to improve on the formula have been sidelined in order to expedite the next sequel to the main series. Those clamouring impatiently for the follow-up to Twilight Princess should be thankful, as Eiji Aonuma, was planning to work on a sequel to Link's Crossbow Training before Nintendo changed his mind.
About a sequel to Link's Crossbow Training, Aonuma specifically mentions wanting to move more towards something “better in the field of the first person shooter” and intensifying the multiplayer aspect both in local co-op and Wi-Fi multiplayer. Nintendo dissuaded Aonuma from working on a first person shooter, in order to work on the upcoming Zelda title for Wii.
It is interesting to see Aonuma wanting to see Link head towards FPS, particularly since Miyamoto has long been rumoured to have been wanting to transition towards a first person view. Personally, I would be interested in seeing a spin off title like this. I certainly would not like to the series as a whole go this route, but it would be interesting to see what Retro Studios could do with Hyrule after their multiplayer attempts a la Metroid Prime Echoes, and first person motion controls of Corruption. WiFi deathmatch in Hyrule? I'm down.

I'd love to get some more of that.
If it plays anything like the showdown in the Hidden Village in Twilight Princess count me in.
I DID think that the parts of Crossbow Training where you moved link and shot at the same time were a blast, though. Just not a whole game's worth of a blast.
Ok, granted, the idea is totally mind warping to me, but considering i had similar fears when the franchise went from 2D to 3D and when it took from regular graphics to cell shading i guess i can give them the benefit of the doubt if they decide to rethink that idea... at least for now

ya know, just in case.
@Xzyliac: I can totally agree with you on that idea.
But if they went third person, they could go back to the more narrow layouts that bring on that sense of isolation.
The Metroid Prime games actually assimilated Zelda elements in its transition to 3D and it worked well. Personally, I'm more concerned about Metroid going to third person. Zelda could work in first person, though I think sword combat would still be best third person. But slip into first person for Bow/Crossbow? Sure thing.
I actually wouldn't mind seeing Link's combat style vastly expanded. I remember back in the Game Boy days that the subweapon systems were much more robust than what we see now You could make other weapons your main weapons if the situation called for it, even going so far as to combine bombs with arrows for exploding projectile attacks. That was sweet. I miss that.
