"Much like Goro, CWal37 loves Baconator Pizza Sandwiches. In fact, he once impaled multiple patrons at a grocery store in a mad dash to the frozen aisle upon hearing that pizzas were on sale. He's no longer welcome at several local grocery stores based solely on his notoriety." -Nilcam
I'll be honest, by the time I was gaming Mega Man had come and gone. X had taken his place as heir to the throne, and it was his games that have stuck with me out of the overall franchise over the years. One of the things that both series had in common was a title theme. While later games in both series had some overwrought openings, it's still the title themes that most resonate for me. So I decided to rank them.
#8 Mega Man X6 Title Theme
This space is left blank in the memory of what doesn't exist, a title theme for Mega Man X6. I can honestly say I enjoy the intro video and song, but the complete lack of a title theme earns it the place of "worst" although since it doesn't have one I'm not sure it should even be on the list.
#7 Mega Man X7 Title Theme
Electronic chimes with little in the way of direction just doesn't do it for me. For X's first foray onto the PS2 I would have expected something a little more grand. Something that grabs the player by the balls and drags them into an awesome new 3D world. Although since the 3D world ended up basically sucking I guess a sucky title theme is also appropriate.
#6 Mega Man X4 Title Theme
Starts off seeming as if it just might tie X7 for sheer boredom, but redeems itself slightly with several seconds of uplifting notes only to quickly scurry back into the shadows, leaving players to wonder if X really wants to be on the Playstation. A theme that might have become something had it been developed further, but with so little to go on it's hard to tell.
#5 Mega Man X8 Title Theme
Signaling something of a return to form in that is easily surpasses the silence of 6 and chimes of 7, 8 is simply decent. Thing great, nothing horrible. The repeating riff could have been a sweet inro into a a quicker more uplifting theme a la X or X5, but despite the lack of any real growth in the theme it manages to snag a spot in the top 5. Mostly due to the incompetence on display in the bottom 3.
#4 Mega Man X2 Title Theme
Nothing particularly flashy to see here, simply a solid theme. 8 could have made a run at 2's spot if it had shown anything near the development that 2 does. 2's theme actually evolves as it goes on, and it feels like some work was actually put into it. What prevents is from ascending to a higher position is that, while it sounds complete, it's not all that memorable or pump-up worthy. While the X series is all about being more badass than the "cute" Mega Man series.
#3 Mega Man X3 Title Theme
If only it were longer pretty much sums up this theme. It's driving manner evokes the original X title theme, but it quickly becomes more complex, only to even more quickly fade into a cliched close. Each opening rising peak represents another challenge for X to beat, a mountain to climb. It's sad that there are only three. The brevity prevents this from being any higher, but what is there and the potential are what keeps it up at #3.
#2 Mega Man X Title Theme
The theme that was the starting point for this post and the one that introduced me to the X series and my SNES so many years ago. I didn't really know anything about Mega Man at the time, but once I popped this game in and jammed the buttons to skip an intro that I wouldn't realize existed until a decade later I knew that the game was going to be totally awesome. The driving metal theme was the first example of such music being used in games that I had ever heard. To this day whenever I start thinking about badass I absentmindedly start to hum the title theme from Mega Man X. While I don't consider it the "best" it's definitely the one that stood out most in my mind at the time and today. From the opening slide to the closing note all I want to do is sprint around blowing stuff up, and that is exactly what the game was about.
#1 Mega Man X5 Title Theme
In a move of pure brilliance X5 reuses the awesome opening theme as a title theme. Because it's reused in this manner I'm putting up the video from the opening because I love the way it's cut to the song. X6 also has an intro I enjoy, but because they neglected the title screen it landed in last while this is first. This is everything an X title theme should be. It's uplifting, marks the beginning of a journey, and puts you in the mood to kick some ass.
Yup Blehman I prefer to blend into the crowd, but hey, it's all on one page. It's not like lists like this are something I rely on, most of my posts don't really fit that mold.
Since I just finished it for the first time all I can think of is Trigun every time you comment Magnalon.
@Magnalon
This is a good thing. Although nowadays when I think about Super Metroid my mind wanders a few years to the somewhat forgotten gem of Metroid II, I just wish I had played it when I understood what was going on a few years later. I beat it, but I was too young for it.
Shit, I wish I still had my copy of MMX5!
Always meant to buy the PS2 MMX collection. Maybe now's the time!
On topic, I love the music from just about every 8 or 16-bit Mega Man, but the X series really takes the cake for sheer badassery.
I agree with your list, but NONE surpass Storm Eagle's stage music!

Here.
Also check out the badass 8 bit version!
I was sadly mistaken.

You make me want to play Super Metroid again, weekly!
