I'm Going to New York
CWal37 | 12:43 PM on 04.16.2009 25 comments

First off I know that it would make sense to put this in the forums, but honestly I couldn't decide where to put it. It's sort of gaming related, but doesn't belong in gaming discussion, and it's too games related to go in the bar so I dunno, whatever.

Anyways, at the end of this semester myself and a British compatriot who was studying abroad and wants to see some of the states are heading to DC for a few days and then new York for a few days. I know that being such a large city there must be gaming related somethings that I should check out while I'm there. Maybe an awesome store or arcade? Anything along those lines. We don't have the slightest clue about what we're going to do once we get there, so pretty much any suggestions will be taken into consideration.

One of my friends was there in the fall and went to the Nintendo store and was sorely disappointed, and if she was disappointed I could only imagine that I would be devastated by comparison, since I'm sure the mythos I've built up around the place is far more elaborate than hers was.

So, be it seedy used game shops, dingy arcades, or some place that is well-kept and nicely lit, what places I should hit up while I'm in the big Apple?

You may as well hit me up with non-gaming related suggestions as well since I'm sure people will anyways.

I hope you have fun in DC and then NY. If I was from either of those two places I would recommend some awesome gaming place to visit. Alas I'm from North Carolina, where we have no cool gaming venues. :-(

Dtoid New York recommends visting Chinatown Fair. Tekken 6, Street Fighter 4, and Blazeblu are all playable at this arcade.

First off, don't call it the "Big Apple". You'll get looked at the wrong way.

There are so many things to do in New York. I've been going on a regular basis since last September, and I'm still finding new things to love about it. It really is the best city in the world, and the Dtoid NY group is better than every other group out there. It's been scientifically proven.

I would suggest walking really slow with maps out and staring at every building while being right smack in the middle of the sidewalk. If it's raining make sure you have a giant umbrella and you don't try to move it out of the way of people.

Just kidding. But seriously don't do that.

There is the Nintendo World Store store there, it has a bit of memorabilia, like that Game Boy a bomb in the Gulf War?

Video Games New York is an awesome store. That place is packed with games from the floor to the ceiling.

Chinatown Fair is an old school arcade with everything Power-Glove mentioned, plus a half naked guy playing Puzzle Fighter.

If you can stand the stench of hipsters, Barcade is a good place to have a few drinks while playing some retro games. Nearby Fette Sau is a nice place to raise your cholesterol with their trays of meat.

And you should totally meet up with us NY Dtoiders. We are a friendly group of drunkards who like to play games, go out to eat, and make fun of Samit.

I would avoid Nintendo World. It's fun for about 10 seconds, and then you'll wonder why you bothered to come there.

The Nintendo store is a lot smaller than you probably imagine. It's not really a worthy destination, but it is in the middle of Rockefeller Center and near Central Park, so if you're being touristy you might as well stop by. (top of the rock is much better than top of empire state imho) As already mentioned, Chinatown Fair and Barcade are both good for different reasons. Metropolitan Museum of Art is free and huge if that's your thing. The Staten Island Ferry is also free if you want good views of the Statue of Liberty. And stop by Grimaldi's or Lombardi's for pizza.

Ok some responses:
@Power-Glove
Oooh BlazeBlu am intrigued.
@Cataract
I'm not quite that dumb, I just used that in the blog because in my mind the writing gets too repetitive if I just say new York over and over.
@Sicknasty
Thank god we have a local Umbrella and lube.
@Topher
I always stay to the right.
@Tino, Samit, Iconsam, CausualWeaponry and Power-Glove again
If it works sure, I'll post when I'll be in in the google group.
@Casualweaponry
That Video Games New York store sounds pretty sweet.

dc? uhh..there's not much of gaming anything in DC. Moreso outside of DC. IF you're willing to ride the metro (and as topher said, stay your ass to the right.) hit up Springfield mall I guess...seems to be the only metro accessible arcade round these parts now. But even they're losing their flare so..don't expect much in DC.

uhh...just go to NY and never visit DC for games. lol. Unless it's one of us Dtoiders.

@Shin Oni

I'm visiting DC because my roommate lives there and I've never been. I just don't have the slightest clue what I'm doing once I get to New York.
