2.40 Bricked my PS3: Update #2
CWal37 | 11:35 AM on 07.02.2008 28 comments

So far Sony is not recognizing an "official" problem or some other shit. I'm in warranty, but don't have my receipt. The two main options are either to send it back to Sony (possibly expensive depending on how well I complain to customer service) or perform a hard reset. Both methods cause you to lose everything. I have another idea though. My laptop uses the exact same type of hard drive as the one in the PS3, so I plan on throwing it in my extra bay on there to try and copy everything off of it and save my data, and then do a hard reformat on my own. The only problem is that my laptop is out for repairs and I have no idea when the hell I'm getting it back.

All in all it seems like Sony fucked up and should have the system check and see if the entire update got downloaded before it freaking installs it, which seems like a fairly likely cause of this problem to me.

I pretty sure it didn't mess up the download, it messed up the install.

In regards to your data retrieval plan, you can also just pick up a cheap drive enclosure and hook it up to a desktop. If you have access to one that is. Not too sure how well this will work though, never tried it myself.

did yur system glitch or something interrupted when it was installing it? if not then Sony should be able to fix it.

Even if you loose everything, you can download all your bought stuff from the PSN download page. But nevertheless it falls under Sony warranty if the update messed up your system.

Best thing to do call sony.

But removing your hard drive and reformatting it seemed to work for other people so you could maybe try that. Maybe it was with the server not being able to handle the number of people downloading this. Point is this shouldn't happen anyways people were expecting this download then it gets f@%^* up SAD indeed.
good thing i haven't downloaded or opened my PS2 days now. was kinda expecting some error but not this serious.

(good luck dude)

It didn't seem like mine downloaded all the way, either, but it installed just fine. I have no idea what to make of this one.

The fact that it is free doesn't mean anything if it breaks a console you paid hundreds of dollars for, so that's really a moot point.

@Pedro

The updates usually do it all the time for me. Nothing to worry about really. Just like how some install timers on PCs go from 30 minutes to 2 in a short span.

Yeah the fact that the PSN is free has nothing to do with bricking your console from a firmware, but fanboys are always objective so I didn't expect much anyways.

bricked usually means that the system wont do anything yes, but the term is used when a firmware update or change causes the electronics to lose the code to know what they are doing it dosn't have to mean its irreversible. It usually is though.

If your PS3 bears a manufacture date within the last year, I think they would waive the receipt requirement. Look on the bottom of your PS3, underneath the side with the hard drive bay. It should have a manufacture date in a gray box.

Yeah I'm probably good on the warranty front, I'm just pissed because I really thought my Wii would break before my PS3. I'm still gonna hold out for the return of my laptop though so that I can try it my way first.

well now you can calm down. Sony DID admit the problem and even took out 2.4 out of the servers, their working on the problem and will be fixing any problem caused by this.

unlike another platform...

Sweet, I just found my receipt anyways while I was looking for Brawl, so I was covered on all bases.

Thanks.
