Time for the long overdue impressions that
I promised you guys. Right Now I am past the sixth dungeon and I think I am fairly far into the game. With a game like Persona 4 though, I don't think that I am too close at beating the game yet. Here are the impressions I have from the game so far.
I really like how Persona 4 streamlined so many things that Persona 3 did. Traveling in town is much faster, you have access to many more social links at the get go, the story is more approachable, you control all characters in battle, the list can keep on going if I really wanted to. That and all the stuff that I really liked from Persona 3 is here, examples being social links and the turn based combat.
The social links are about as good as they were in Persona 3 with the exception of two in particular. All the social links focus on a particular moral dilemma that a person can really think about and maybe apply it to real life. Some of the social links actually hit really close to home for me at times, I grew up in a very small neighborhood so some of the issues really resonated with me.
I don't like the fact that SP is now what dictates how long you stay in dungeons. As long as you keep the SP high, you can spend an indefinite amount of time in the dungeon. This is quite possible if you play your cards right, literally speaking; and if you strengthen a particular social link. It got to the point where I beat the last dungeon I was in with only one trip.
The story, up to the point I am playing at least, seems pretty good. It actually plays around with the Persona name and focuses on the facades people put on in front of others. That being said, I still prefer the Persona 3 story for some reason. Probably because the sense of urgency Persona 3 throughout the game and the fact that you can only do so many things in one time in that game added so much too the mood. Though Persona 4 could totally pull the rug from under me since some of the game's big mysteries don't seem even close to being solved.
So far from what I have seen though Persona 4 does the name proud though since it is easily again one of the better RPGs I have played in awhile. Whether or not it is better than Persona 3 at this point depends where the Persona 4 story goes from here.
OMG, I personally could not stop talking about this game as long as I was playing it. I was the most satisfying title I played all last year
How far are you bro?
I don't remember what the sixth dungeon is.
All you needed to say for the impressions is "This game is fucking amazing if you dont play this go die"
This game is incredible, end of. :)
I. Love. This. Game.

*Slight Spoilers*
The sixth dungeon is the Secret Lab/Naoto's Dungeon
I didn't want to have any spoilers on the blog that's why I was rather vague on the whole blog.
Yeah this game is awesome , finally got it a few days ago =]
Upto June on it, just at the start of the rise case. Its SOOOO GOOD
I just finished Kanji's level yesterday, Im having alot of fun, about 25 hours in.
Except for the first dungeon (unless you buy some healing items), you can beat all the dungeons in one trip.
I prefer the cast of P4 than P3 but the presentation in P3 is much better. Maybe is because of the Dark Hour and how ordinary people turns into coffin.
Overall both games were good and I'm looking forward to P5.
The presentation in P4 beats all others. The menus alone are proof of that?
Did you see that main menu that showed plain orange silhouettes of the characters, only the glasses colored otherwise? Clicking that brings up an animated transparent outline of a random character's running animation, viewed from far below. It's details like that that blow the competition out of the water.
P4 might have a more positive, cheesier aesthetic than P3, but there are very few, if any next-gen games that can match the attention to detail given to this title.
I'm not even half of the way through, but I like that SP is now the primary limiting factor. The dungeons are all smaller and easier to manage, come with unique design formulas and aesthetics, a different soundtrack and everything else. None of the crawl-fatigue I occasionally felt playing P3 came up, but every foray (to kill the optional bosses or collect materials) felt fresh and inviting.
The condition system from P3 was tiresome and arbitrary. You often had to waste days since you couldn't plan ahead on who would and wouldn't be ready for a run. Everything concentrated on your doing runs on full moon nights so you could drive your comrades ragged. Not fun.
@unangbangkay
I totally agree with you on the presentation. The presentation on P4 is excellent considering it came out on the PS2 and edges out P3 out constantly. I also didn't know about the run animation thing, I'm gonna go check that out right now actually.
The merits of both the SP and condition systems are really a matter of one's own tastes in my opinion. I personally had fun with the challenge and randomness that the condition system brought with it. While I do not like the SP system, it is really only a minor gripe I have with an otherwise really great game.
Yes, this game is simply amazing. I'm going through p3 after having such a great time with 4. I'm not sure which one I like better though. I like p3's story and characters (plus I actually know greek/roman mythology compared to p4's japanese) but p4 improved on so many things. Quick traveling, controlling the party members, awesome dungeon music, etc. They're both just great.
@unangbangkay
I never had much of a problem with the condition system besides maybe the first two months. I can usually get in an hour of crawling before people get tired which is about the time I get bored of it.
I'm planning on picking Persona 3 up soon. I'm just mad that the next Persona will probably be for the ps3. The console I don't have.
