Trying out a new blog series, looking for community input
Krow | 7:05 PM on 05.12.2009 27 comments

I've been rolling around the idea of creating a community blog series for a couple of months now, and I've finally settled on topic. As often as video game protagonists and antagonists are discussed, there never seems to be a very deep character evaluation of either. For any video game to even exist, a protagonist and antagonist must be present. They aren't always tangible people or creatures, a good example of an intangible protagonist is the falling blocks in Tetris.

From the simple plumber to the purple dragon, video games provide a wide array of protagonists for us to control. I'm sure many of you have a favorite hero you like to possess, or an antagonist that you enjoy pursuing. If you're interested in hearing me cover them in a future article, please leave your suggestion in the comments below.

Also, I'm aware of how hard I fail at banners.

Sounds to be a good idea! If it weren't 2am over here i'm sure I could think of something decent to contribute..

Okay, how about the Prince and Elika from the new Prince of Persia game. That had a pretty weird care/not care kind of ending, might make some interesting writing about how well a character is supposed to come across in a videogame.

Nemesis from RE 3.

My word, it sounds awesome.

If you can, do Niko Bellic. At first he seems the stereotypical criminal, but once you play the game and analyse his character deeply, purposefully looking at the motivations behind his cations, well then you realize what a well-constucted character he is. IMHO, he is one of the best videogame characters made.

If you can't do Niko Bellic, do Daxter from Jak and Daxter (2 and 3 might serve you better).

I await your first blog with baited breath.

I've been playing Soul Reaver recently, howsabout Raziel and Kain? Sure Raziel isn't really a true "light" character, but that might make it more interesting.

I agree with KIRANIO.

Seriously though, no idea.

I assume you're going to be doing these on the pair of protagonist/antagonist as opposed to focusing one one protagonist or one antagonist each blog. That sentence was hard to word, sorry if it comes off as incomprehensible.

I really haven't slept in like 3 days.

Dante and Vergil from the DMC...they're brothers and antagonists to each other

@Caffeine Knight

You are correct in that assumption sir, but if any particular game features a protagonist or antagonist that is disinteresting I'll just focus on one or the other.

Solid Snake vs Liquid Snake would be an obvious but awesome choice.

I second Debloo. Nemesis is one of the best videogame villains ever. He would kick revolver ocelot's, Pyramid Head's, and Sephiroth's pansy asses all at the same time with one hand tied behind his back.

I would make you a banner but I am busy with work, and I have an obligation to finish the Failcast stuff and draw Yojimbo a samurai.

That's the problem with art college, when you finally have free time to draw you are already tired of it :(

so yeah, Jill and the Nemesis.

I was going to say Link vs Ganondorf. I know it seems cliche, but I'd love to hear what you have to say about it. The key to any character is finding the good in the bad and the bad in the good. Have fun with this, and I'll see what I can do for a header. :)

That one is a given.

@Everyone

Thank you for your suggestions and kind words! In case it wasn't obvious, this was inspired by the former Community Blog master and recent associate editor, Conrad Zimmerman. I'm shooting for having one of these every Wednesday, we'll see how well that goes. If I do miss a Wednesday, you'll know I'm busy but rest assured that the following week will have a post!

Banjo-Kazooie/Grunty (like I even need to suggest this)
Red/Giovanni (Pokémon)-It's a ten-year-old and the head of an international criminal organization!
Mega Man/Wily (Or for what's probably deeper, some combination of X, Zero, and Sigma)
DK/K.Rool
